Just Say No

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Signs have hole #, distance, and an illustrated map. The signs are actually pretty nice. Discatcher baskets are in halfway decent shape even though the chains have rusted.

Cons:

Usually I use the first half of the Pros section as an intro. For Pickeral Point Park, that intro belongs right here in the cons. First off, the 9 holes are spread through 3 separate parks, Pickeral Point, Crystal Spring, and Lions. You cross 2 streets 2 times each. In just 9 holes. After playing 9, you could walk back down hole 2 or walk out to the street and down it to the parking lot. Just a really goofy layout that didn't even result in any nice holes.

This seems like a course aimed at neighborhood novices, but backyards are very much in play on a few holes and a marshy pond on another two.

Hole distances range from the low 200s to the low 300s. Most drives allow you to pick your line. No elevation change. The challenge is staying out of backyards, roads, and marshy areas. Skilled players could likely score very well with a single putter.

There are a few instances of fairways that play on top of one another in opposing directions, but I'm actually not worried about that as it's clear nobody plays here. Tees are grass. I've seen natural tees rut out fairly quickly on moderately trafficked courses, but couldn't even find which side of the tee signs people had been teeing from here.

Other Thoughts:

For the course collectors/baggers/completists/whatever, you're playing it anyway. It is what it is.

For everyone else, don't bother unless you live in the neighborhood.

For the city of South Elgin, not every park is a good location for a disc golf course, but you've now officially struck out. This is the third attempt to establish a disc golf course in the small parks near the fox river. The two layouts on the west side were terrible and this one may be worse. I know suburban sprawl has reached the fox, but I'd be surprised if there isn't a better piece of unused land within the city borders to dump these baskets in.

Unique... You Determine if That's Good 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Innova DISCatcher baskets in decent shapes
- full color maps on tee signs
- tape on baskets to indicate next tee direction, navigation was straightforward
- good incorporation of water hazards, though a throw over water might be nice too

Cons:

- too close to residential yards/hazard of errant throws
- hole 6 sort of throws towards a children's playground
- street crossings
- natural tees
- limited obstacles
- strange layout/flow on an oddly shaped piece of park land
- no amenities
- no elevation change

Other Thoughts:

Pickeral Point Park is one of the most unique courses I've played if you exclude the best of the best. It has a somewhat odd layout where it snakes through a narrow strip of park land between residential houses, dips into another park briefly, then comes back through that strip. I found it kind of entertaining, but I suspect most people would just find it weird.

The baskets were in decent enough shape, although some of the mounting heights were odd (on average, they seemed a bit high). This course was natural tees only, but they were essentially fully grassed, which makes me think this course gets very little use. There is some risk of throwing into someone's yard if you aren't careful, which isn't great. You also have to cross 2 roads multiple times during play, but they are very quiet.

I think my biggest complaint is between 1 and 2 you pass through a wooded area that could hold 1-2 cool holes. That would have been a better use of the space. Holes 2, 3, 4, and 9 throw along some ponds which add some challenge. Otherwise, the course is extremely open and pretty straightforward.

Like many, I wouldn't seek this course out again, but despite it's weird configuration, I had a pretty good time playing it. I'm just not sure the locals will love people traipsing almost through their backyards hurling discs around.

I believe there was an outhouse and a picnic table near the start of the course, but that's about it for amenities. This one is pretty off the grid.

Well......there are baskets 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Innova Discatcher baskets (look to be re-used from the old South Elgin course, some chain assembly is rusted)
-Tee Signs & course map makes for easy navigation
-Nice setting along the Fox River

Cons:

-Extremely poor/dangerous design
-Does not utilize the best features of the park
-No tee pads

Other Thoughts:

A portion of the course is in a really nice setting along the Fox River. I work very close to here and was pleased to hear about there being a course along the Fox again.

I drove down a road where baskets #4 & #8 are next to, and saw a few more baskets in the periphery. Looked congested in design before I even got to the parking lot.

Hole 2 is a tight fairway with pond on the right and fences/yards/homes on the left. Very easy for a disc to end up in a yard if not worse.

Hole 3's tee is about 10 feet behind hole 2's basket. Your ideal tee shot on 3 will go about 15 feet right of 9's basket. Just an extremely dangerous area right here.

Hole 4's basket and Hole 9's tee are within about 20 feet of each other. This also applies to hole 5's basket and hole 8's tee.

The course could use a redesign to say the least. I plan to contact the park district to see if they would be willing to listen to a pitch for a few holes to be moved for safety & flow purposes. In its current state, any more than a few players on the course at a time could be a real hazard.

Not much improved when moved to the east side of the Fox. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

South Elgin has a disc golf course again! The park has water hazards, a portages-potty and ample parking!

Cons:

The layout of the course leaves a lot to be desired. Both holes 4 & 9 and 5 & 8 cross each other. The tee sign for 9 is less than 12 feet from 4's basket. There are no tee pads either. If this course ever becomes a popular course (not likely) the design will put players in harms way.

The proximity to private property also could lead to issues if the neighbors are difficult. CCR says people on the river are happy to give, and this course is going to test that out.

Other Thoughts:

Many years ago I played these baskets at SEBA park on the other side of the Fox river. That course didn't have a very good layout either and was one of the lowest rated courses on DGCR at one time. I expect Pickeral Point will have a similar distinction in time.

Playable 9 hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-nice park space by the river
-bathroom at the first hole near the parking lot
-nice map near hole 1
-a few holes incorporate water hazards pretty well
-baskets are solid
-course was mowed

Cons:

-no tee pads
-not a lot of variety in the holes, no bombers
-several holes overlap or have baskets next to tee pads
-a few holes don't really have a good line due to tree coverage
-the course flows a little strange due to park land
-lots of private property bordering the course

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1- a 240 foot shot to an open basket. Good warmup hole. There are a few trees in fairway to avoid.

Hole 2- 245 feet. This hole plays straight with a nice sized fairway but to the right is a murky pond and left is private property. Also if you go 50 feet long could end up in the pond by 9.

Hole 3- 220 feet straight shot. However there is a big tree that isn't trimmed in the middle. Choices are a hyzer over the pond from hole 2, or an anhyzer near the pond on hole 9. If the tree is trimmed on the bottom to provide a better low line drive line it would be better.

Hole 4- 304 foot shot in a good sized field. To the right is private property (grip lock could make it) and left is the pond near 9 (if it hyzers early could make the pond). Basket is right next to the pad for 9 so heads up.

Hole 5- 240 foot straight field shot. Not much difficulty here. Hole 8 plays across this hole and the basket is near the hole 8 teepad. Road is a good 30 feet back from the basket so no real danger.

Hole 6- 301 foot hole. A few trees and an ob walking path. Also a baseball field to the right but not really in play. River is good 70 feet from basket so no real risk there. Watch hole 7 as it plays parallel to 6.

Hole 7- 245 feet, back across the path. There are a few big pine trees that cluld give you problems. Basket is under a few trees. Watch that path again and watch for anyone on 6.

Hole 8- tee pad is next to hole 5 basket. 223 feet straight field shot. Not much more to add

Hole 9- 312 feet. Id consider this the signature hole. Dog leg around a murky pond, cattails with a shopping cart and busted bottles in it that I saw. Direct route is hyzer over the pond. A tree protects the forehand or anhyzer line forcing a giod shot here. Watch holes 3 & 4 as both play near this hole.

I think the design could be improved. The course just did not flow right. Tee pads and baskets are playing dangerously close to each other. Wish they could use the woods behind 1 for the course in some way.

I felt it was a 1.25 course but I always tend to round up so I will stay consistent. Add some tee pads and maybe move a hole or two and use those woods behind 1 it could be a solid 2.5
