What are you doing on the underside of the disc when you putt?

This can apply to spin putters, push putters and everything in between. What are you doing on the underside of the disc when you putt?

I noticed when I putt my index finger "clears" first and then I push on the disc with my middle and ring fingers. I really feel it it on the inside edge of the ring finger. I don't know if this is good or bad but im just curious what other people do. I'm guessing spin putters do something else.

I don't putt like Buhr, but his talk about the finger pop up is very good compared to any other putting videos. This kind of pop is required for both spin and push, imho.

I think Buhr finishes his putts palm up, not everyone does. Simon, for instance, finishes palm down. I would have to think that's going to have an impact on exactly what's going on.

Simon is generally a spin putter, but he occasionally pushes. Buhr is more of a push/Spush. It seems that spin putters generally finish palm down and push putters palm up. I'm sure there are examples to the contrary.

I've been thinking about this and looking at some videos, and I don't think this is really right.

We can look at Feldberg defining a push putt here:

Note that in his demonstration of the push putt he emphasizes that you "just open your hand" and "shake hands with the basket". Stokely also talks a lot about "shaking hands with the basket".

Now, if you are trying to release a putt flat your fingers will have to be under the disc supporting just at release, but in order for you to shake hands with the basket, you aren't going to be popping up with your fingers into a palm up position. So I think we see two main variations of the push putt style.

Examples of "shake hands" are the previously mentioned Feldberg and Stokely, as well as Kevin Jones and Gregg Barsby:

Buhr and Sexton are examples of a palm up motion:

In this putting clinic from Sexton you can actually see him showing you a really high palm up finish when he modeling the form without the putter in his hand:

Now, when he putts, he eventually finishes with his hand in a shake the basket position, but it's way later, even after the putt is in chains.

Something to note about Buhr is also how outside of his body his hand is, which is really odd. Although that was a really long putt.
