Where's The Second Nine? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 5, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.761 Rating) A bombers friend and a pee shooters nemesis.
- HOLE LENGTH - Although there's no exact figure listed on DGCR, the all par 3 layout appears to average almost 375 feet. This comes out to a 6,750 foot par 54. Yikes. Faulkner should be a welcome treat to throwers wanting to throw some holes in the 400 foot range.
- CHALLENGING - The difficulty at Faulkner is mostly one dimensional. How far can you chuck it down fairway. Players that can't throw over 300 feet won't be able to crack par here. It fact, those players will have few if any birdie opportunities on a typical day.
- ELEVATION - I was definitely surprised by the amount of elevation here. It has to be one of the hillier courses in the Mobile area. Still however, the elevation is very approachable and cart friendly, maxing out at 25 feet on any one hole.
- MAINTENANCE - Fully clipped and groomed grounds in the path of play. There's some thicket in a few spots but there's always ample bailout room.

Cons:

Too open for many players.
- SAFETY HAZARDS - Just about every hole here has some sort of school actively, walkway path, parking or road in the field of play. Several tee shots even cross roads, although the roads here are all low traffic use. Hole (2) I have the most grievances on. The tee shot slightly angles across a road and has a parking lot in play on the right. During my round, cars were in this parking lot, so I abbreviated my play on the hole.
- 9 FAIRWAYS - There will be some that argue that this 18 holes course is really a 9 hole course with two tees to each basket. Regardless of the definition for this one, no one will argue that the two tee shots use relatively the same fairway on every hole.
- NAVIGATION - Although I only planned to play the front nine, I still gave an effort to find the alternate markers and came up short four times for holes (11) (12) (14) and (18). So needless to say, finding a few of the markers is going to take some extra recon. The front however is fairly easy to spot, but there are no directional cues or maps currently available onsite or online.
- CHARACTER - Faulkner comes up short in the amount of course extras. A couple out of the way benches, limited tee shading, no multi basket placements or practice basket. The baskets are adequate Mach 3s and have the typical large number on top. The tees are natural with no defined throwing line. I'm sure restrooms and drinking fountains are in the campus buildings, but they probably can't be used except by students and their guests.
- UNIQUENESS - Below average variety but I've seen many college courses with much less diversity. Most of the holes are long open plays. A few shots do have a splattering of trees. An all par 3 layout but some are long enough where some recreational players will argue that they're par 4s.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - A touch below average. No eyesores or major blemishes but nothing stunning or exotic either. I scored the course roughly a 2 out of 5. No water in view or play. Backdrops views are meh. A bunch of buildings and other manmade features are in view and play the entire round.

Other Thoughts:

I would have never taken up the sport had this course been my first introduction. This course reads clearly as one that was designed by a higher rated player that throws long. Beginners will get frustrated here, and it's kind of where the course fails. Typically I'd like to see a University course offer up at a minimum, a layout with a few rec level holes. This course will scare newer players away. I personally enjoyed bombing a few discs down fairway but that play occurred a few too many times.
- TIME PLAY - Playing 18 will likely take 2 to 2 1/2 hours for a foursome. About average.

Excited then Disappointed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Built in a city with no other courses (So at least there is disc golf in the city)
-Uses elevation change and scenery of campus

Cons:

-Seems like a lefty built it as majority of holes are long righty turnovers
-No directions on where next hole is located
-One of the tees has been covered up by a huge dirt mound (hole 14 I believe)

Other Thoughts:

I was very excited to see that my old junior college had built a disc golf course around the campus. Then I was disappointed as the course seems very lefty friendly, not balanced, and lacks directions for a player who has never played the course before.
