Relaxing, enjoyable 9 hole experience 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 7, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Heritage Park in Grandville, MI is a short, easy 9 hole course that plays around a pond/creek in the center of the park. There is a small bridge over the creek at each end of the park for disc golfers and other park users to easily make a 1/2 mile loop.

The tees here are quite nice for a 9-hole course. There are concrete tee pads and tee signs on every hole. The pads are pretty small but I feel they are large enough given the length of holes.

Despite the very short length, there is a little bit of challenge here. Hole #2 is by far the most difficult (also the longest). For the first 250' or so off the tee, there is thick brush on the right side of the fairway and the pond/creek on the left side. I think the fairway also tapers slightly (gets narrower) over this length. Then the brush opens up and it's a sharp dogleg right the last 50' to the basket. Some of the other holes have a few trees guarding the basket to make things interesting.

This is simply a pretty park, and a relaxing place to play a round.

Cons:

There is not much challenge other than #2 here for anyone beyond recreational level. Some holes have no obstacles at all between the tee and basket. The park is also pancake flat - I doubt there is +/- 10 feet of elevation change on the entire course.

The baskets are getting a little older and single chain models. I have had a few putts that would have stuck in a newer basket but clinked out of these baskets. An upgrade would be appreciated.

You will likely run into a number of other park users while playing this course. There is a path circumnavigating the park which has been in use by several people each time I have played the course. This path never runs across the fairway but could come into play along the side of the fairway on almost every hole. There are no blind shots here, so it's on you to throw only when it is safe (be a good ambassador of the sport, insert soapbox speech here). I do think that the course designer(s) did a good job avoiding other park areas like the volleyball court, basketball court, and playground. All of these could come into play only on a VERY bad throw. It also helps that all of these other areas happen to be to the right when playing the holes, so a RHBH thrower is even more unlikely to go OB.

There is a chance of lost discs on the water holes.

Goose droppings can be prevalent on some parts of the course.

Other Thoughts:

#2 is the difficult hole here but the signature hole has to be #9. It's only 164' long, but your tee shot has to carry the creek through a clearing in some trees that line it. It's an easy carry (I would say 50' at most) but just a fun and pretty shot.

This course looks short, easy, and somewhat boring on paper. To some extent it plays that way. But there is something about it that keeps me coming back...I think it is a combination of the aesthetic and that it's a good practice round for a relative newbie like myself. There are a handful of courses closer to me than this one, but this currently ranks as one of my most played courses.

This is certainly not a course you should travel far out of your way to play. But if you live in the area or are visiting, and have half an hour...check it out. Unless you are a pro player wanting tons of challenge, you will probably enjoy your round here.

Update 11/2020: After playing this course several more times I have to downgrade my review from 3.0 to 2.5. With new baskets I would put it back to 3.0. I am also marking hole #7 as a water hole. I have never thrown one in there myself, but after watching two people in 5 mins today sail their tee shot past the basket into the lake on this hole I am thinking a little differently. This is still a really relaxing and enjoyable round, one of those places where the overall course feels like more than the sum of its parts. I am a local rec/amateur level player and this ranks among my most played courses. It's worth a stop if you have a few minutes and are in the area.

Great Little Park , Nice Easy Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Driving to here from the highway , if you sneeze hard , you will miss this park on the right . Saying this , I am NOT making fun of this park . Small in size , many of the locals utilize it . Paths for joggers , people walking their dogs , picnics , a play area for the kids , walkers , Even a couple sharing a hammock next to the #9 tee . Park goers seem extra friendly . Not a huge area for parking . Find a space , then proceed to the right side of the park if you are facing it . The baskets are those single chain old styles that will cause putts from a hard putter to bounce out , but in okay shape . Concrete tees are short in decent shape , Good signage giving you distance , and a scene showing you the flight path . The course plays very short and pancake flat offering disc golfers a fast round . This is very good for newbies and families or guys and girlfriends to just throw and talk . with the exception of #2, (300' ) and 3 ( 285 ' ) the rest of the holes are <250' . There is a small pond / creek that runs through the middle of this park . Most disc golfers pick up and go after a round , especially a quick 1 or 2 , but this park beckons you to stay for a while . Just a good park to take a seat on the benches and soak the park in and some of its small wildlife that goes in and out of it . Most of the baskets sit almost straight in front of the tee . There is not a lot of space to work with here . The most competitive hole is #2 , a slow hyzer right , that has deep brush to your right for about 260' before it opens up , and a creek to the left that drops off a little . The creek also guards the back end of the hole , but gives you a decent sized green to putt . Nice hole .#3 tee is over the nice bridge that spans the crreek and to the right . #1. is a straight 247' throw with some small trees guarding part of the front of the basket . My signature hole would be #9 , a short 164' throw through a brush window over a creek , bending your toss a little left . . A real nice finishing hole . You don't need a map for this course . It runs counter clockwise and you can always see the next tee from each basket . Bathroom at front of park . Park is well manicured .

Cons:

Not a long list since I liked this park so much . #1. Can be lots of park participants . I had to stop several times for walkers and people with dogs . You might even have to skip a hole if a couple or family decides to set up grounds near a basket . Respect these park enthusiasts . It's their park . #2. The lake/pond . You may have to go fishing if not careful on holes 2, 8 or 9 ( only if you ricochet off your brush window on 9 ) . Course is FLAT , but not especially a con . Very short course , measuring at just under 2000' . No challenge for anyone better than a casual player .

Other Thoughts:

If I lived in the area , I would take my dog for a walk , play a round , sit and enjoy this park . Mingle with the friendly locals if you want . I would have given this course a higher rating , but there is just no challenge here besides #2 . Great for introductory disc golf 101 , and kids. Regardless of this I am still telling you to STOP IN AND THROW AND RELAX . Thank you , city of Grandville for the opportunity to play this park . .

# 9 Was Sweet! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 4, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

When driving up, you can see that this little park is happening place. Besides the disc golfers, there were folks fishing, walking around and several picnic/parties were in progress. The park centers around a small lake and creek in the middle. The disc golf course starts right next to the parking lot and plays around the lake counterclockwise. The wonderful metal signs were made as an Eagle Scout project by Colonel Tyler Van Eck. Tee pads are concrete and not very long. The baskets catch well enough.

The water can come into play on a few holes including 2, 8 and 9. I witnessed a young player land in the lake on # 8. Luckily, he was able to fish it out. There are some straight forward easy Ace Runs.

IMO, the signature hole here is # 9. It's just a little 164' easy throw over the creek but it has to be semi-threaded between some branches hanging over the creek, and a little anhyser touch is required. There is some skill involved and better yet, it's just a pretty little throw.

Cons:

Chance of lost discs in the lake.

Interference with other park users.

Seems to be busy.

Some asswipe spray painted the # 3 sign making it unreadable.

Other Thoughts:

This is just a cool little course. It's fun and has some interesting shots. The lake probably puts a little pressure on players. You can tell by the player use that this a well attended course. There is a plethora of courses in this area and this one would definitely be on the regular circuit.

Short and Open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-nice park, well kept
-Most holes are VERY short (under 300, a few under 200)
-good for beginners and working on your short game
-lots of ace and birdie possibilities
-actual bathrooms on site

Cons:

-plays near lots of other park activities
-not a lot of variety, pretty straight forward shots
-VERY slippery tee pads, almost better off not using them

Other Thoughts:

It was a decent little course but the tee pads are the slipperiest surface I've ever thrown from. I'd rather have dirt than those things; please add some traction! The park is pretty nice and there are a couple of holes where the water is a legit threat. A few holes are very close to each other and could easily cause players to unintentionally interact with each other. The day I was there was rather windy and since the course doesn't have a lot of trees to block that wind, it definitely affected our gameplay. It's easy to play this course in about 30 minutes so it's a good warm-up for bigger courses. Overall I'd play it again if in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Simple, crowded 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Clearly marked, clean, relatively new course, great for beginners as it is very easy with the exception of #2.

Cons:

Very crowded, not much of a challenge, short holes, a lot of pedestrians during peak hours. The tee boxes are very slippery at times, so much so I don't use them.

Other Thoughts:

very easy, good for taking kids so long as you don't mind waiting a lot. Simple layout, easy to navigate.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

They have tee pad here. One some downside is they are small and kind of slick(most holes are short so you don't need much of a run up)

The signs here are some of the best. Pretty accurate and nicely displayed. They have the hole number, the size and the actual shot. This makes it super easy to find your way around.

This place is pretty small, but they used the space nicely. There are a few holes close the the trail, but not to bad.

They have baskets here.

The park itself is very nicely kept, has everything you could need in a park. Makes for a quick 30 minute round.

Cons:

These baskets are kind of scary for me. Have a chance for bounce out if you are a hard putter.

The place is pretty straight forward which for beginners is really nice, but someone who has been playing a few years it's not really much.

The tee pads, although nice to have they are kind of short, and slippery.

Other Thoughts:

This place is a nice small park. Good use of land, but not really a full round feeling. I used to work down the road from here and it would of been a perfect after work round. If you want to hit an ace, this is a good place to play.

hrm.... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

tee pads--concrete, seem a little small but the holes are short
signage--nice! accurate distances
routing---easy
risk v reward--decent use of the lake, rounded counterclockwise so the lake was always on the left.
baskets--DiscNation baskets, single chains, but remarkably grabby
hole 9--LOVED IT! nice to play across a creek with a lake on the left...
the aesthetic--nice park! no garbage or overgrowth.

Cons:

variety--there are some interesting pin placements but for the most part these were fairly straight forward
challenge factor--the only reason it was challenging today was the wind. other than that, it woulda been an ace run kind of day.
length--one hole is supposedly 300' all others are shorter

Other Thoughts:

I think that when rosewood re-opens, these will make a good two-fer or maybe a three-fer with hughes park.
not bad for a 9hole eagle scout project.
