A Haphazard, Srubby Pitch n Putt - That's Fun!

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- some decent wooded challenge on most holes
- incorporates some very minor rolling elevation change
- well isolated from other activities in park
- fun for all ages/experience levels
- generally easy to find discs; rough but not overgrown
- cool shot to finish on 9 trying to throw under low hanging branches to the basket
- tee signs with maps are a little basic but serviceable

Cons:

- gravel tees are just ok, but only a little rutted
- extremely short to the point some won't care for it
- fairways for 2-8 are all crammed together
- navigation could be more clear since all holes are practically on top of each other
- fairly long walk between holes 1 and 9 and the rest of the course
- if course were ever busy, major safety hazards
- water hazard could have been incorporated for more challenge

Other Thoughts:

This is an odd duckling of a course. In general, I found it fun and casual, but the long walk between 1 and 2 and then coming back between 8 and 9 is a bit weird. The lake you pass on this walk is just itching to be incorporated. Holes 2-8 play through the woods with very short distances but some moderate technical challenge. Amenities are pretty lackluster here but this course shouldn't take you more than a half hour to play, so it's not that big a deal.

If the course ever were busy, you'd practically be throwing on top of your neighbors on holes 2-8, which go back and forth in a very cramped wooded area, so that would likely not go well. I can't imagine this course getting very busy, however.

My favorite hole was probably 9, as you're throwing at a basket a decent distance away with very low hanging willow branches shielding the basket. There is also a small roll downhill before the basket, so you have to keep your shot above the grass prior to the dip but below the branches which created a surprisingly unique challenge.

You likely won't need more than a midrange and putter for this course, maybe pulling out your fairway driver once or twice. It's a fun, quick round - a bit unpolished, but feels like you're there in nature a bit more on 2-8. Nothing to go out of your way for, but if you want a low-intensity round, this course is worth a try.

But....why? 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 12, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Nice baskets
- Some decent technical holes
- Nice for ace runs or putter only rounds
- Pretty clean
- Decent tee signage
- Disc golf area is away from the rest of the park so not a lot of overlap with other park users
- Free

Cons:

- The big con is holes 2 - 8 have basically no fairway. It's all shrubbery and forest undergrowth from the tee pad to the basket, which is really annoying. I don't know that it's particularly easy to *lose* a disc, but it is very easy to end up spending time looking for it.
- It's extremely tight. Like 2 - 8 is packed into an area that another course might only have 2 or 3 holes. I don't know that it ever gets very crowded, but if it was that could cause some issues. Shank a drive and you're basically in the "fairway" or circle of another hole.
- Hole 1 and 9 are off by themselves. The rest of the course is on the other side of the baseball diamond. Makes for an odd layout and there's not signage directing you from basket 1 to teepad 2. which is confusing. They should've just made hole 2 the first hole, and then have you finish with holes 9 and 1 as holes 8 and 9.
- Dirt teepads have tons of erosion to the point that it's hard to tee off using the middle of the teepad, as there's large holes there (also fill up with water if there was any rain). These need to be filled and leveled again.
- It's short, which isn't really that big of a con to me, but the longest hole is like 220 and most are under 200 ft, so you're limited in what kind of shots you will need/use

Other Thoughts:

I have certain expectations when I come to a disc golf course. When I'm playing a mixed use public park 9, I'm not expecting the world. That being said, this course has some really confusing design flaws that if they were cleaned up (or hadn't been made in the first place) could make the course so much better. Like I'm not sure why 2-8 are packed off in this woods area that's full of shrubs and undergrowth. There's a lot of park space that they didn't use, which is a shame because hole 9 (which isn't over there) is probably the best hole on the course. Maybe they wanted to keep the disc area separate (understandable) but then they could've cleared away some of this brush and growth and planted some grass or something...maybe make some mulch fairways at least? Cleaning up the woods area and making some actual fairways would go a long way. And then the odd hole layout with the big gap between 1 and 2 and 8 and 9... just end with the two holes that aren't in the woods? At least add a sign directing. Between the teepad erosion and the overgrowth I'm not sure how much attention this course gets. Which is a shame. All that said, the play of most of the course was not bad for what it was. I would maybe come back if I'm in the area and want a quick round, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way again. It just left me wondering "why?"
**UPDATE 2021**
I've played this course a handful more times since last year when I left my initial review. Since that time, and this year in particular, the upkeep as made some improvements. A lot of the shrubbery and undergrowth has been cleared away, which is very nice. They added a mando and sign to hole 8 which is a nice touch. For this reason, I'm bumping up my rating a half star. If they added concrete tee pads I would consider a 3. There aren't many 9 hole courses in this area, especially ones that receive attention and maintenance. It has flaws but I'm glad it's here.

Pros:

The course is basically set up in a disc golf exclusive area of the park. Only holes 1 and 9 are exposed to other park users, but barely. the baskets are beautiful red Mach V's that are brand new and catch great. Well done with these. The tee pads are pretty solid here, if not spectacular. They are very large and level boxed in gravel pads. These were in great shape and worked well. There is a course map attatched to the fence of the tennis court by hole 1 which is nice. The tee signs are really well done too. They have a simple hole layout showing the tee to pin (basically all dead ahead) arrow, hole number and the location of nearby tees and pins to help avoid confusion. More than sufficient here. The course is free unlike a lot around here. This is a pretty great beginner course in my opinion. The distances are all around 200 feet. Every hole is basically straight with a few guardian trees to help shape lines. Better than most typical park courses out there.

Cons:

As mentioned in earlier reviews there is all kinds of thistle and thick underbrush on all the fairways of 2-8. We went early October and everything was cut down pretty solid. But if this isn't done on a consistent basis this will be a basically unplayable course in the warmer months. This is kind of a con but one nonetheless. Holes 2-8 are crammed together. This is a safety hazard as far as errant shots. I almost got smoked by a 10 year olds disc because the holes run so close to one another. I doubt it's ever too busy but keep your head on a swivel anyway.

Other Thoughts:

Nothing worth going out of your way to play but worth a quick spin if you're in the area with minimal time or money. That being said if you have the time and/or money just take the short drive to Elver and play that instead. Couple it with Hiestand for the same $5 fee to play both and you got a great day of disc golf. We started as a warm up here then just rocked Elver from shorts then pros and that was a great day of golf. So there are many options to be had in this area. Madtown has some of the better disc golf in WI.

Has some potential! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

It is nice little course in a park that has a whole lot of things to do! The tees and the signs are in nice shape.

Cons:

Since this is a new course I am assuming it is a work in progress. There are no fairways as it appears this was clear cut for the purpose of the course. Lots of weeds and rough terrain yet. But I think in time with some work on the landscape it could get better.

Other Thoughts:

Nice little course. It has some potential to be better if Middleton is willing to clean up what should be fairways.

If you enjoy weeds, this is the course for you! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

The rumors are true! The city of Middleton has installed a new disc golf course in Lakeview Park and it's FREE to play!

+ I love the brand-new red Middleton Mach III baskets. Aesthetically, they are beautiful. Functionally, they catch well. There are two course maps (one before hole #1 and one before hole #2) that do an adequate job of describing course flow. The tee signs convey the distance and where other tees and baskets are in relation to it. It's very comprehensive.

+ Great for beginners. While I only needed a putter and had a very real chance of birdieing every hole, the short distances are very conducive to introducing a new player to the sport.

+ Ace runs! For an intermediate+ player, this is a deuce or die course where every single hole could be considered an ace run. With all holes falling between 165'-240', you can leave your driver at home.

+ The closing hole, #9, stands as a solid signature hole. It plays downhill 240' and is guarded by a huge willow tree. I thought it was a really fun hole to end the round.

Cons:

- After playing hole 1 (and seeing hole 9), I got my hopes up that this would be pretty mediocre 9er. Then I walked into the clusterf*ck that is the majority of the course. Holes 2-8 play in an overgrown, weedy section of the park. As you can see from the pictures, if this is left unmaintained, it could be referred to as the Amazon of the Midwest. Even though the majority of the holes are short (I think the longest hole came in around 240'), the possibility of losing a disc here is real due to the dense weeds.

- In terms of design, a couple longer holes would have been nice. While there are several lines you can take for most holes, some have predetermined routes where you need to come from either the left or the right. They're also clumped very close together, which means there's a serious risk of getting hit if there are multiple groups playing at the same time.

- The tee signs face the wrong way. Typically, they should be be readable from behind the tee, rather than readable from the prior basket. I guess this helps navigation, but it threw me off.

Other Thoughts:

I was up in the air between a 1.5 and a 2.0, but decided to give this course the benefit of the doubt. This course can go two ways, in my opinion. The weeds on 2-8 can be maintained and this will thrive as a solid 2.0 course, or weeds will be left to flourish and this course will slowly be devoured by nature.

While it's absolutely fantastic to have a free 9 hole course in the area, I really wish that it would have been placed in a more manicured area, rather than being thrown in an uncomfortable and weed-rich spot.
