Cool scenery, has potential, but disappointing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Really neat location at Lincoln Homestead. A decent mix of open and wooded holes.

Cons:

Really only 9 holes with 2 tees each. VERY poorly maintained. Most tees are just thin turf laid on the ground. Overgrown, and almost impossible to follow the hole progression.

Other Thoughts:

Could be a fun course if it was maintained and laid out better. Probably wouldn't play it again.

Surprising 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Surprisingly nice little course with a variety of throws needed.
The best thing is that it is only 26 miles from where I live and until the Shelbyville course goes in it is the closest course to me.
And, even better, I ACED #6 the first time I threw there.

Cons:

The tees were pretty bad but were better than nothing (for turf tees they stayed down really well). Level concrete tees would be a great improvement.
The walk from #4 to #5 was a long uphill hike and if I had not taken a picture of the map it would have been hard to locate. I don't believe I want to play #s 5 and 6 in the summer since I am sure it will be so overgrown. That woodpile on #5 HAS to be removed. While the mando on #1 works it really doesn't for #10. I wonder how many RHBH throwers put their stable- overstable discs out on the highway with its surprisingly busy traffic.
A particular pet peeve of mine is the presence of green briars and wild rose bushes. They have no place on a disc golf course and should be removed. I consider them to be a safety hazard and are pure evil.

Other Thoughts:

Fix the tees and get rid of the sharp pointy things and I might give it a 3 or 3.5.
I was surprised to see 2 other guys playing when we got there - it is pretty remote.
I was all ready to be condescending and critical (see below) of this course but I liked it enough that I'll return and play it some more. I understand the KY State Park people really don't see the benefit of having a disc golf course and have talked about taking out the course at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park and aren't taking care of the one at Rough River. They shot down the guys that tried, for 10 years,to get a course at Taylorsville Lake State Park and they even had 19 baskets and signs. It seems that the State can't understand why the courses that are so far away from anywhere don't get a lot of use and when they could have put a championship caliber course at Taylorsville which is a short drive from a large vibrant disc golf community in Louisville they wouldn't allow it.

Great Course and Will Get Better WIth Age 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is set on the rolling land of a Kentucky State Park. It offers lots of elevation changes and several holes have water hazards in play. There are defined fairways for all holes, and the rough can be very rough. This course requires a variety of shots for both distance and accuracy. It has nine baskets with two tees for each. The tees provide enough of a different look to give the feel of a different hole. There has also recently been a bridge added between hole six and seven.

Cons:

I only list these here because they are not pros. I know this course is a work in progress. Baskets are not your top tier baskets, but they catch fairly well. Turf tee pads are in place. I consider these better than grass, dirt, or rubber and not as good as concrete. A couple spots can still be cleaned up, but that is being worked on. The only spot you have to worry about ball golfers is on the walk from 4 to 5 and it would take an errant shot to get to you there.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice course as is and with play and getting broken in it will only get better. There are still things that need to happen, but the installer is constantly working on this. When it comes right down to it is another course to play and a good one at that. Appreciate what has went in to getting it installed and remember it is brand new and changing for the better.

Brand new with great future 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good elevation changes.
Sits on Beautiful land on a state park.
Work in progress ,done mainly by the park manager.
A mixture of shots needed.

Cons:

Not really a con ,but baskets are a cheaper basket ,m.v.p (black hole.)
Pads are turf carpet.
Yes parking is close to 1's fairway ,there's plenty of parking on other side and behind tees.

Other Thoughts:

Turf pads are going to be replaced with concrete later.
A bridge has been installed in place of the blocks.
Course just been put in,so still needs some trimming.

Reply to first review:

1. Agree, handicap basket needs moved out of 1 and 10 fairway.
2. Agree, long walk from 4 to 5 long walk,not 3 to 4.
Long walk from 6 to 7.but think with land available, course turned out great.
3. Disagree, with making only 9 holes, although some tees are close with different looks ,making this 9 shorter with 9 longer on most part turned out great.
Just my opinion, not bashing your review.

Can't wait til this gets broken in and gets concrete pads.

Good potential but needs work 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 21, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lincoln Homestead uses some nice parkland adjacent to a ball golf course. As the name suggests, you'll find old log cabins, covered bridges, etc from Lincoln's boyhood home steps away from the course. The maintenance is great. There's a nice pavilion that the course loops clockwise around. Overall, there's enough difficulty to where the average player might card a few 4s.

First off, let's call this course a 9-hole'r. There are 9 baskets (with 2 additional practice baskets) and 2 tee positions per hole. Holes 3-9 have some personality.

#4 was a 300ft+ nicely-shaped, grassy fairway with a creek on the right side and tight woods on the left. Right at the kink in the dogleg, there's one tree to contend with.

#5 had a nice lhbh hyzer with a small window down a hill to a basket sitting right in front of the creek.

#8 is a pretty downhill LHBH anny with a nicely trimmed tree perched in the middle right near the turn to the basket.

There are very descriptive course maps near the long tee for hole 1. Grab one, you'll need it.

Cons:

There's a sense of impermanence here. The tees are merely turf pads nailed into the grass. Most are unlevel and lumpy, which will only get worse with time. The signs are small posts with only hole numbers. At least adding distance would be a welcomed improvement. The MVP baskets catch great but may not be durable enough longterm. Some degenerate already damaged one of the practice baskets near the playground by almost snapping the pole in half!

I really hope the wobbly concrete block steps across the creek are temporary.

The long tee on #1 is right next to the parking lot for about a 175ft stretch. Your car might be right in line with a noob's rhbh hyzer. Also on #1, a practice basket is in the fairway for both tees here. I'd definitely recommend moving it elsewhere.

Navigation is a little rough, with some lengthy walks between 4-5 and 6-7, although you do get to pass through a cool covered bridge between 4 and 5.

I appreciate the effort into making 18 different teeshots, but this is not an 18 hole course. At least half of the holes have teepads that are within 40 ft from each other with only slightly different looks.

Other Thoughts:

I'm torn with the rating here. The course clearly needs more work, which is understandable since it's brand new. There's a decent amount of fun after the first 2 bland holes.

I think the best way to improve the course would be to first admit it's a 9 hole'r. Then choose the best of the 2 tees and improve it. Maybe upgrade to concrete or at least better level the surface under the turf while adding more hole description to the sign. Leave the other tee location as-is for the alternate.

The land is really nice for 9 holes. I think some tweaks can bring Lincoln Homestead to a 3-3.5 rated course.
