Weekend Tourney 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 9, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Layout was challenging.
-Multiple tee pads.
-Multiple pin locations.
-Good mix of wooded and open holes.
-Very little chance of losing discs in water.
-Walked the course without a map, and did not get lost.

Cons:

-No tee signs. You need to bring a scorecard to know tee distances.
-Grass Tee pads. Hard surface not needed for red tees, but would be nice on longer holes.

Other Thoughts:

Despite the tee pads and lack of signage, this was a fun course to play. The long tees award precision, and the short tees make you use all shots in your bag. I especially liked the uphill hole #14, and the bridge hole. Bring a map and scorecards with you so you know layout and distances for each tee pad, since there is no signage.

2/24/2020: Updated rating from 4 to 3.5 after comparing to other courses.

3/20/2020: Upgraded back to a 4 after comparing to other courses. Looks like this one is really more like 3.75 for me.

Best course I've played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great variety of open/wooded holes.
Innova discatcher baskets.
Friendly locals.
Multiple tee/pin placements for all skill levels.
Generally very well maintained.

Cons:

My putter was claimed by the pond on hole 11.
That's really my only problem with the course.

Other Thoughts:

Really is the best course I've ever played. Worth the drive from wherever you are to check it out. Whether your a pro or just a weekend golfer. You will enjoy yourself.

Out of the way for me, but a top level course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-three sets of tees marked with painted stones (red, blue, and yellow/gold)
-active maintenance (Shane was out mowing when I played); for a "rural" course, fairways/lines were not as rough as I expected, and the trees seemed trimmed appropriately
-although remote, there's an active disc golf community out here; Shane just hosted an MVP event last weekend and there are other tournaments - definitely a good course for competition and scoring separation
-good mix of holes (long, technical, wooded, open, etc.), with consistently good use of trees to shape lines and especially good basket placements and greens - e.g. holes 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 15 all had what I would call excellent greens and basket placement, and all of the others were good as well, using trees/brush/slopes/water as available
-absolutely not a "birdie or die" course, especially from golds; this made the high quality of the greens even more of an asset to the course
-good basket quality (they had one stolen in the past couple years, and were able to get funds to get all new Discatchers
-navigation was logical for a first timer, and the course map on DGCR is accurate (helped after hole 9 and after 13)

Some of my favorite holes:
1 - fairly long/open; gold tee behind trees which restrict line, basket on hilly surface by other trees
4 - long, (gold out and around) to one of those excellent basket placements I mentioned: a guarded green with both bushes near the basket and some trees farther out requiring skillful approaches
5 - first wooded shot with a very tough (but not exceedingly narrow) tunnel; uses a creek bed to effect before the green
8 - this was maybe my favorite, with some nasty stuff off to the left of the fairway and a guarded (by some rough/trees in front of and left of the basket) and treacherous (some slope away from the basket to punish long putt attempts or hot approaches) green
11 - nice hole which would probably be Mekusukey's signature; basket not visible from the gold tee, but up against the lake/pond and going past a classic windmill or some kind of farm structure
12 - straight shot up a road or path, basket in another guarded green off to the right of that fairway
14 - uphill over an intentionally rough upslope; wind definitely in play
15 - slight downhill; basket in a green amidst trees; choose a straight ahead gap or go around trees for a look

Cons:

-doesn't have concrete tee pads (surfaces were fine, but this might be different in wet conditions)
-currently no signs with distance
-no bathrooms on the course, can't remember if there were trashcans (really not a con to me)
-biggest problem: I don't live very close
-sometimes the gold tees were either not very far behind the blues or in slightly strange locations; e.g. in hole 4, it was nestled right behind an outcrop of trees. Having only played once, I have mixed feelings. It wasn't bad, but forced a shot out to the right instead of directly ahead from the tee. It made for a nice hole, but just seemed like a "different" tee placement. On others (e.g. 16) I didn't observe mandos, but moving the gold tee back actually allowed a wide outside line or an overhand shot. Shane mentioned that they plan to restrict to the tunnel shot in an upcoming tournament.

Other Thoughts:

There were several courses in the Shawnee/Seminole area that I had not played, so I took a day to make the drive from the Oklahoma City area. I knew that Mekusukey would be both the most challenging and most interesting, so I saved some energy for this one. I decided to play from the gold tees, and I shot a 61. I definitely left some strokes out there with poor approaches and missed putts, but overall I had some decent shots and a very fun round. The main downside was the heat (95-100 degrees), which meant I was exhausted and probably a bit dehydrated for the second half of the round. Even in that heat, Shane was out mowing by hole 14 and the course looked great for it. The long patch of grass he was mowing was the only unkempt area of the whole course. We were able to chat briefly and then even played the other Seminole course together. I happened to be wearing a Selah hat, so that led to a brief discussion about course design and John Houck, who happened to be up in Moore for a new design. This might be Shane's first course, but he did a great job and I'm glad he had the inspiration to use tribal land this way!

I was expecting it to be a little more raw/rugged, but I was very impressed with the condition of every hole. I did spend some time looking for discs off the fairway, and I was pleasantly surprised not to get any ticks or poison ivy or other bug bites. Maybe I just got lucky, but I think it reflects on the maintenance and the fact that this course was not as raw as I expected.

This was a really nice course, and I look forward to playing it again. I consciously gave it the same rating as some very nice courses in Norman/Oklahoma City that I play regularly. It might be a little bit more raw than some of my other 4.0 courses (no concrete tee pads and no signs), but it also has some positives (challenge level, hole diversity, course maintenance, much less busy) to balance that out. I have no complaints about the tee surfaces even without concrete, and I never threw to incorrect baskets. Navigation was no problem but I recall using the course map a couple times. It sounds kind of cliche, but it was a nice mix of technical and open shots, needing accuracy, line shaping, and some power. It was a very enjoyable and fairly challenging round of golf, and a course I would play regularly if it were within striking distance.

Rating discussion: As I said, I consciously rated it the same as my other 4.0 courses (currently Dolese and NE Lions in the OKC/Norman area). Perhaps I could rate it higher, but I didn't yet get the same "wow factor" vibe that I would associate with higher ratings. The holes were all pretty good/fair/challenging, but they didn't all stand out to me. Nevertheless, while revisiting my single round out there, I have tons of holes or shots I'd love to attempt again. (In disc golf, that's what keeps me coming back.) Courses tend to grow on me the more I play them, so I expect this would be an easy 4.5 after playing more here or with some small improvements. Thanks Shane and co! Keep up the good work and I'll be looking to get back out there.

Wonderful course on Seminole tribal land 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has a great layout that's going to break out the majority of what's in your bag. Has three tee positions for nearly every hole and different mandos for each tee. Has some lovely death putts also. Shane the designer came and talked with us while we were playing, he is a great guy and was very appreciative of us playing. Especially because I had three Seminole tribal members playing with me! He has put together a wonderful course to go play and maintains it incredibly well.

Cons:

The rough is extreme if you get off the fairway and lots of poison ivy. Thats really the only con I could come up with honestly.

Other Thoughts:

After our conversation with Shane we were very excited by the additions to this course he is planning. I cannot wait to play the upcoming tournaments here. Maybe make one of the holes shoot across the pond for some extra fun.

Holy cow! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 15, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Brand spankin' new Innova baskets
Long, short, medium holes
Three t-spots
Beautiful tournament style course
Water in play, but not at risk of losing discs.
Good signage to next hole
Painted rocks as t-markers
Three position tee's

Cons:

No concrete t-pads (yet)
Tee markers were painted rocks..ok but signs would be nice.
2 death putts (ha ha)

Other Thoughts:

We were in the area working and did a search on disc golf courses in the area. Two (2) came up...the city course and this one.
Glad we took the 10 minute drive south of town.
This course is awesome.
Note: This course is on Tribal land with schools, head starts, etc.
Please respect the tribal lands and be responsible.
We played after a rain the day before. Holes 1-3 were a little muddy/soft but then the ground got
a little better.
Wear crummy shoes if playing after a rain.

This will be a great summer course.

Concrete t-pads and t-markers will make this a five star course.

Will be back!

Mekusukey, ah suki suki! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

+quiet, great views from hole 1
+nice mix of open and technical holes
+feels like a private course, seems like it has the personal touches of a caring caretaker or two
+some elevation
+pond in play on a hole or two
+three sets of tees, choose your level of difficulty
+generally easy to navigate (hard to locate all three tees on a couple of holes though)
+played in mid-summer and didn't have any troubles with bugs

Cons:

-tee signs are just big painted rocks on the ground, few have the distances written on them
-in the woods the rough can get very rough on a few holes, I played in mid-summer and was definitely cautious on some throws, playing a midrange instead of risking looking for a driver in the nasty rough
-no course map posted

Other Thoughts:

Mekusukey was a cool course to visit, the best of the 15 courses I played in the greater OKC area. Lots of variety in the holes, it will make you use all of the discs in your bag if you play all 54 tee boxes. Probably more fun to play in the winter than in the summer because of the overgrowth. Would be an excellent tournament course.

Great course, great people 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great course tucked back in Seminole. It's far away from the busyness of traffic and construction and is a great place to relax while playing. It is very well-kept and, as a matter of fact, I ran into the course designer himself today and he helped me orient my way around. But he was out there himself mowing the course. The course had a great combination of long and short holes.

Cons:

Hole #11 (aka The Windmill Hole) was pretty tough to see the basket from anywhere above, despite being on an elevated area. It could use just a tad more trimming of the overgrowth. The only other thing that was a concern for me was that the tee boxes weren't always clear on where they were or where the hole was. But with a little bit of redecoration, that could be an easy fix.

Other Thoughts:

Such a fun course. I recommend taking the short drive from the city out to it and if you happen to meet Shane, shake his hand and thank him for the hard work the guy puts in.

Great hidden Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great variety of holes. multiple tee's make for more variety and difficulty. mixture of open and wooded shots. The 9 permanent baskets are nice. even the Temp Baskets are not bad to throw at. Once I found hole 1 the small signs pointing to the next tee's were very helpful. The fairways were nicely mowed and well kept. The people working on this course are doing a great job. I encourage you to go play this course if your in the area!

Cons:

Hole 1 was hard to find and not a good place to park.
Wish it had concrete pads.

Other Thoughts:

In my opinion I would make hole 18 hole 1 and go from there. That would allow people to park down by the little pond area.

A jewel of a course, if you know it's there 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are a good number of shots that are challenging (e.g. baskets 5, 9, 11 aka the Windmill Shot, & 13). Also, there are baskets in which you can let your disc fly (e.g. baskets 1, 2, 4, & 18). Basket 5 is unique with the placement passed a small dried creek and surrounded by trees.
3 tee levels that can be viewed as beginners, intermediate, & pro on each basket. Also, there's a good mix of backhand & forehand shots.
Great usage of the land with some good looking scenery. Baskets are really spread out, so if other people happen to be playing they won't interfere with your game & vice versa.
There is an open area to the left of tee 1 that can be used as a driving range/warm up area. I really don't know if it was designed like that, but that's what I use it for.
If you like to move/walk, grab your pedometer because you'll accumulate steps on this course!

Cons:

The course is really off the beaten path, so there hasn't been a lot of foot traffic to create trails.
A course map would be a plus, but still easy to navigate for 1st timers.
Grass may get wild during certain times of the year.

Other Thoughts:

Not many people know of this course, so there is a good chance that when you play you'll have the course to yourself (However, more reviews on this course may change that).
