A Tale Of 2 Ottawas 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Ottawa is one of 2 parks within 20 miles of each other , in the same state ,( with the only difference being that this one has Memorial in it ), and both having an 18 hole disc golf course . This Ottawa is in a multi use park with a nice swimming pool ( in use when I was there ) close to the start and finish of the course . A bathroom at the pool is open when the pool is . Plenty of parking , but a good walk to the first tee .
The Equipment : There is a kiosk next to the woods near the swimming pool . It is fading and the map on it is hard to read any more . The signs are okay , giving the usual information needed and a diagram of the hole . All of the tee pads are cement , about 3 1/2 X 8' . The yellow banded Discatcher baskets are starting to rust and have seen better days . The first hole is through a path in the woods and on your immediate left .
The Landscape : There isn't much in the way of elevation in this park , but Course Designers Brian and Tim Fruchey used all of the lightly rolling hills here . There is a larger and small creek in play . The larger is still small and clean enough to grab your disc if you don't mind getting wet . Most of the holes are park style and weave around the park , while, several of the early holes ( 2-6 ) are in the woods . There are great uses of the mature trees and their canopies on the course .There is a nice bridge that you will cross at least twice during your round ( 3-4 and 8-9 ) The park was mowed and well taken care of when I was there .
The Highlights : I think that Hole #1 would have been the star of this show , but a large downed part of a tree blocked the whole fairway about midway through . I had to skip it . #3 was an interesting hole . About 150' through a tight fairway with the creek in play on the right , it doglegs at a 90 degree angle and out of the woods into the open where the basket is . You have to be precise and have guts not to play station to station on this hole . #5 is a long fairway with a hill in play on the left and the creek on the right . #11 is a 414' hole with a tiny creek running in the fairway . Mature trees and their canopies force your drive to remain low .
Signature Hole : #16 , 421' . The longest hole on the course , it is an elevated tee shot down into a narrow fairway with the tiny creek on the left and a hill on the right . mature trees form a canopy forcing your drive low , or a roller . The basket eventually sits on top of the ridge on the right .
The Time : It took me an hour to play here . A group of 4 shouldn't take but 2 hours .
Disc Risk : Low , if the water level in the creek stays low , even though there are a few blind shots , there is little overgrowth to have to search your disc in . The holes are short , which means ricochets aren't going to impact losing discs as much .
It is a nice well used park with a fun vibe to it's disc golf course . There is plenty of variety here to keep both the left and the right hand players happy .

Cons:

#1 Safety . Some of the fairways run parallel to each other , and some blind shots could cause both a player and a park user to get " the plastic surprise " . This is not the type of course to use stealth in order to sneak in a round . Make your presence known and keep alert . The course plays too close to the pool , the tennis courts , and especially some tables and benches from 11-15 . .
#2 Navigation . A 2007 course with no online map ? Someone is napping . The kiosk is unreadable . . At the bottom of the hill on #1 , make sure you go left . After 3 , go over the bridge to the hole on the right . #8 finishes next to the tennis court . Now you have to cut left , find the secret path that takes you to the bridge you cross . The hole will be on the right Long walk - tough find . The tee for #18 is close to the parking lot end of the pool . This course needs Next Tee signs bad .
Lack of length/Challenge . The course really lacks a true par 4 , and the only 2 holes to break the 400' barrier are 421' and 417' . The course is short at 4724' and some of the holes are birdie or ace runs ( 4,7 & 8 on the first 9 ) .
Equipment : Repainting the kiosk would be a good start . Maybe inserting new chains in the baskets .
I saw no trash receptacles here. Carry out what you carry in,
Clearing the fairway on #1 will help .

Other Thoughts:

This course gives you what it has . Not a great amount of room , but still 18 holes of disc golf . The park is not unique , but it is a pretty nice walk in spots . I had fun here . Being a Monday early evening , I didn't get to see how crowded this park can be .
Just a few touch-ups and this course would qualify for a 3 for sure . Please add an online map to help the non local players .
My Recommendation : The course is clear of most overgrowth after hole #1 . That means that this course is good for the newbie , a family , or even a date & The 1 discer . Intermediates might be okay with it , but good ams or pros will likely not . It is a little off the path for a traveler , but an okay add for the Course Collector .
This course is okay . If you are around Ottawa and have your discs with you , have some fun with this course .

nice small town park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

I made the drive to play a course I have not played.. and this course has some good thought into the crafting of the holes, and is challenging just enough that if you are experienced it lets you enjoy it, and simple enough if your are just starting out, you can play and have a good time.
you have blind shots, both to the left and right. tunnel shots, one really nice hook or roller.. the hook would better if you could get enough height.
it has some open and some wooded, really a decent course.

Cons:

finding 9 tee from 8 basket. there is a sign, when you leave 8 basket, point direction of travel, but then you come to a wood line. and nature trail, but there is also other trails. basically, hike through the trees, and back across the bridge you crossed going to hole 6 tee ..THIS IS WHERE 9 INFO SHOULD BE POINTED OUT.
8 plays next to tennis courts and a set of bleachers, which if were being utilized, i would not want to throw for fear of hitting someone.
The park is a neighborhood park, and while it was late September when i was there, there was nobody else in the park, period. But because of pool, and other amenities, i can see sometimes having trouble with people in the area of possible risk of getting hit.

Other Thoughts:

I liked it.
I would play it again.

I bet some bug spray for the course at right time of year wold be a necessity.

Good course nice park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Not much land to work with but it does a good job of not feeling crammed even though most of the holes are pretty close together
Pretty good mix of open to wooded to moderately wooded.
The creek that comes into play on the first half of the course is the perfect disc golf creek. It's there and it provides a challenge but if you do end up in it, it's shallow and small enough to easily recover it.
Good flow
I came when this course was not in season but it looks like it's well taken care of

Cons:

No one was there when I was but you can tell that on a busy day non-disc golf traffic could make the back 9 of this course nearly unplayable.
This place can hold a ton of ankle deep still water in the rainy season. In an odd way it made it better. Sort of unofficial water hazards but your feet will be wet and cold.
Had a little trouble locating hole 9 and a few others but the do provide yellow paint on the catchers and signs with arrows

Other Thoughts:

Nice little course it starts out wooded and around a shallow creek and then goes around some tennis courts and back into the park. After hole 8 walk around the building down the nature trail, Across the bridge and up the hill to find the next hole, Other then that the flow is fine. The back nine plays mostly through some small rolling hills and around some shelter and playground areas so look out for pedestrians.
On hole 15 my disc made a B-line straight at a squirrel climbing a tree, I missed him and the tree by inches and just as I was laughing about his good fortune I noticed that my disc had a chance at the basket and Bam! My 4th ace in the last 8 months. I came away very happy so my rating may be a little inflated as a result. But it's definitely a nice course if you live in the area. But it's not a road tripper. I live almost 2 hours away and this one will not be on the list for a return visit.
But good job on this course guys, I enjoyed playing it!

short but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 20, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good use of trees and available land

the creek on the first few holes adds risk to your shorts while still being shallow and easy to get disc back out of the water .

Some long and some short it has a little of everything

nice tee's and signs ,the even have arrow signs pointing towards the basket on a few holes if there blind shots .

Cons:

playing would be trouble on a busy day as more the a few holes have shelters and other actives right in the fairways .

hole 3 was just stupid, the holes doglegs left after 150 feet and there a creek 10 feet behind the start of the dogleg ,just no good way to shot it as there's no over the top are a way though the thick woods .

Tees and fairways overlapping each other on several holes with tees dangerously to others fairways and add the risk of being hit be a disc

hole 11-14 (i think ) was way to short and boring every shot was a putter backhand shoot that was between 150-220 it's nice to have some ace runs but these holes just don't seem to fit with the rest of the layout

Other Thoughts:

I like the course it was fun

Fun Course, Good Design, Short 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2011 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice little course in a park setting. I had fun here but it is definitely a pitch and putt extravaganza with some fun shots mixed in there. Most of the holes are very short. I wouldn't go out of my way to play this course but if I lived in Ottawa, OH then I wouldn't be too disappointed to play here in a regular basis. On the surface it appears dangerous as many of the shots play in and around picnic areas, pavilions, tennis courts and playgrounds. However these shots are generally really short so erratic throws at innocent bystanders should be kept to a minimum. There are a few longer holes where you have to thread through some trees and deal with a little bit of OB. The walks between holes aren't too bad and the course seems to flow good other than the walk from 8 to 9 which was long and confusing. Not a great course by any means but the design is well thought out and it seems to be a course that fits the park very well. Most of the drives are "fun to throw" and the putting areas are "kinda cool" which are two big factors for me.

All concrete tees !! This park is well maintained when not soaking wet..The course offers a little of everything from tight and technical to big bombers !! I have always enjoyed throwing this course and find it worth the 45 mins. to get there !!

Cons:

When the season is wet this park holds some serious water ! Not unplayable by any means but prepare to get your feet wet ! some of the back 9 run real close to the playgrounds and pavilions ...

Other Thoughts:

Love throwing this course !! Had led to some GREAT games within the PDF !!!!

Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice variety.
Some holes are nearly un-birdiable
Some elevation (by NW Ohio standards.)

Cons:

Some areas are not well kept.
Unclear and intermittent water hazards often have close calls questioning OB.

Other Thoughts:

Long walk from basket #08 to tee pad #09. This walk is not clearly marked.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course now has cement tees, and on the longer holes the tee pads are longer.

Very descriptive tee signs. Also liked the message on the bottom of every tee sign" don't throw unless the coast is clear" or something of the same facsmile.

Course right next to swimming pool (so it has good visability within thew community, and if you want to go for a swim after playing you could do that as well).

Though I'm left handed, I' liked # 5 as it's definatley a turnover shot for me, plus the begining of the fairway is much narrower than the end of middle fairway. Lot of birdie opportunities.

Cons:

(major) LONG walk between # 8 's basket and # 9 's tee. when creek is up, course tends to play a bit harder (like it did the day I played it) as most baskets that water comes into play are near the creek.

Other Thoughts:

Didn't know if there's a mando for # 3. Tee sign doesn't say anything of the like, so I played through the woods. Watch your speed as park is in a close knit neighborhood
