Pleasantly Surprised 2+ years drive by

Pros:

From the long pads this course is challenging. Some really great holes that play alongside or over water. And several holes that were basically filler holes. Tight fairways to test your skill and I would guess it is usually windy being so close to Charlotte harbor. Inside clean restroom, course maps inside, easy to navigate once you find a hole to start on! Hole 18 is a great finishing hole where it takes two accurate placement shits before you can approach the green. It is an easy par from the long tees if you are playing for par, but I am sure many will lose their discs if they are trying to birdie it.

Cons:

No signs. It is a park, people park in the middle of the fairway, and you have to throw close to ballfields, tennis courts, and even an RC track. Lots of places where you could hit someone with a disc so I would definitely recommend you skip those holes if you are not very accurate with your drives. Hole 17 was a nice shot over and around water, but a guy was parked in the middle of the fairway and was hitting golf balls. I tried to throw around his truck because I wanted to play the hole and ended up losing my destroyer in the drink, oh well.

Other Thoughts:

Looks like they did good with what they had to work with. If the wooded land around the course belongs to the park they could make this an amazing course by moving the mediocre holes out a little bit away from the ball fields. If you are local, it is worth playing as it is, Wouldn't recommend traveling a great distance to play it though.

Finally a course that you can drive on !! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Great Tees-Great Baskets- Groomed well

Cons:

Not much shade and you will definetely "cook" in summer.

Other Thoughts:

Again..Im used to long distance holes coming from Michigan.. This is the closest I have found in Fla to have any kind of 300-400 foot drives that are open and require some thought and more importantly different ways to play each hole. I really enjoyed this course, even though I went swimming twice. A few holes are goofy as far as interaction with playgrounds, parking spots and tennis courts, But atleast you can "air" out a drive on multiple holes. #18 Needs to be addressed for the typical AM 3/4 player not realistic to make a good run at a par for the average guy, with the ball fence and pond location. IMO this is the best course I have found in the Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda area.

Nice start, horrible finish 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 31, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I was really stoked to play this course because it was new and in the town I would be vacationing in. That and because the reviews were terrible! I just couldn't imagine it being as bad as described. But man was I wrong!

Hole 1 is not bad, kind of pedestrian, just a straight shot to a basket behind a island of greenery. So far, not so bad.

Hole 2 is actually pretty good. Throw straight 270 through a gap, let disc fade to basket.

Hole 3, a little midrange flick shop, but an easy birdie. So, not too bad at all.

Hole 4 is excellent! From the longs it's a 'deuce of die' from the long. Try the RHBH anhzer shot to the basket over water, or pitch to the edge of the pond and toss across.

Hole 5 is a strong hole as well, but could use some trimming off the long tee. And it's another long S-Turn, anhyzer shot tot he basket.

So far I'm really enjoying this course!

Hole 6 is another flick, but fairly long to the basket for bird. Another pretty good hole!

Hole 7 is where things go wonky. Not a bad hole, but basket is badly positioned. Easy par or long flick to basket for bird.

Hole 8 is definitely where the issues begin. The long tee points toward...nothing. The short is over the corner of a playground...why in the hell did they do that? Could have changed the angle and made a decent hole.

After this you have mostly junk.

Hole 9 throws down a road, blind to traffic coming behind you. Just freaking stupid.

Hole 10, continuing the stupidity, throws down a sidewalk! Seriously, down a freaking sidewalk!! What in the hell were they thinking??

Hole 11...more madness, tosses over the corner of an RC Car track! Why?!?!

Hole 12 is the filler hole of all filler holes. 235 feet in the middle of a field...no trees, obstacles, etc.

Hole 13 would be better if they trimmed it. It's a long tunnel shot with no ceiling.

Holes 14-16 are ok, 14 actually pretty good. But they aren't special. Just holes.

Holes 17-18 are Boring, just stuck out in the middle of a field, though 17 does offer you have the chance to land in a pond.

Cons:

I would have to say 7 out of the last 9 holes suck, are stupid, should be pulled etc.

Another thing I hated is that there are no tee signs. Just concrete pads in the grass. You have to stumble around to find them. More dumb thinking

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad loop if you play 1-8, but the walk back to 1 is a bit of a hike, but much better idea than playing the rest.

Safety Hazards 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.496 Rating) A city park course that's more challenging than it seems first glance.
- WATER PLAYS - I enjoyed the water plays here as they really make you consider your placement and angle rather than thinking on how to attack the basket or going for distance. The water features are best used on holes (4, 5, 17, 18). Although I carry a floater, I only used it on (18). (17) and (18) were my favorite water plays where the risk reward of going long towards the basket on these par 4s can very much claim your disc.
- CHALLENGING - My group played the short tees and as an intermediate player, I thought I had my hands full on several holes. The back tees should very much challenge advanced players on many holes too. Not as difficult as the nearby course "The Preserve", but my initial guess is that a 950 rated player will average 4 or 5 down from the back tees.
- TEES - Really nice concrete tees of adequate width and good length.
- CHAINS - The Mach 5 baskets are great to throw at.
- COURSE MAP - Nice course map in the vicinity of tee (1), and the practice basket.
- QUICK PLAY - For an 18 hole course of this length it plays fairly quick. My group of two played in 90 minutes and we took a couple breaks. Figure two hours for a group of 4 players.
- MAINTENANCE - The grounds were in great shape on all but one hole, (8). The grass on (8) around the basket was shin high.
- NAVIGATION - Although I had a guide for this one, it seems fairly easy with a pic of the course map. The course flows very well from one hole after another. I don't think any holes are separated by more than a 200 foot walk. Really the only navigation issue is the hole signage and word is that it's coming soon.

Cons:

Some substantial flaws with South County Regional
- SAFETY HAZARDS - I was very fortunate to play this course when all the other park features were not in use. Playing this course really has the potential to put people and property in harm's way. (8) has a playground off to the left, however it appears they have begun cutting a new fairway further right on (8). Hole (10) plays along a tennis court. Hole (11) has a cart track in play. (17) and (18) have parking lots in play. In addition, several holes have small roads and paths in play. Depending on your expectations, I could see someone really not liking this course for these issues alone. But as for my rating method, it really only docs the course about a half point and personally this had only a minimal to moderate impact on my enjoyment of the round.
- TIME WAITING - Although I didn't wait one second to throw during my round, the potential to have to do so is real and substantial. Skipping holes may sometimes be the only wise choice.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Way too many unnatural elements in play and in view to warrant a high score. I personally scored this one a 1.125 out of 5.
- ELEVATION - They don't get much flatter. Not even 5 feet of elevation change on any one hole.
- CHARACTER - Course amenities and extras are limited in the courses young state but it does the basics well. As stated in pros, 2 sets of wonderful tees, nice baskets and a course map. The rest of the things that you'd see on an established course are missing. Very little seating, no hole signage and no multiple basket placements. There is a practice basket and also a couple picnic tables. Restrooms are in the park, but not at the junction of (1) tee and (18) basket.
- LOST DISC OPPORTUNITIES - A real possibility. I lost an ace disc on (5) trying to ace run my putter to the basket. A disc robbing palm got it.
- UNIQUENESS - A bit below average. A few par 4s, a few water plays and a few pockets to hit. Too many holes are open for my personal preference, but there are a couple of moderately wooded holes. There is also a decent mix of challenging holes versus gimme holes. The overall shot shaping opportunities are lacking.

Other Thoughts:

I had the privilege to throw this one with DGCR member and trusted reviewer Thrembo, whom has always made for great company. In all, I see South County Regional as having a wide range of review opinions. Some will not like this course due to the safety hazards and also the unnatural features dictating shot choices rather than natural features. I enjoyed the course, although I think not having to deal with any park goers for the entire round, definitely helped.

Safety Hazards are a step back for disc golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 new Mach V's
nice concrete pads
2 pads on most holes.
Some water in play

Cons:

I found myself playing a hole thinking, "This may be one of the worst holes in all of Florida" then the next hole was worse, and the next even worse. So many safety hazards that I feel this course will be pulled in 2 years.
Holes 8,10, 11, 13 and 17 are some of the most negligently designed holes I have ever played.
Holes 3, 4, and 7 were extremely poorly designed holes.

Hole 1 looks like a short shot to basket 18 and can easily start your round with a misplay. The real hole is blind behind a tree with the locked baseball field in play.

Hole 2: Short blind forgettable hole.

Hole 3: Straight shot at baseball field, can't over shoot since chain fence directly behind basket.

Hole 4: Tiny little hole throwing over a minor water hazard with absolutely no landing area near basket. The basket is just placed in the center of a palmetto patch.

Hole 5: The only decent hole on the course. Water on the side.

Hole 6: Silly short filler hole

Hole 7: design is even worse than holes 3 and 4. Straight shot with a 90 degree turn about 150 feet over high grass.

Hole 8: literally thrown over a playground into knee high grass.

Hole 9: Simple open hole by the pool. It plays by the road, but no major safety concerns.

Hole 10: Absolutely awful dangerous hole. Tennis courts are in play on the left. A remote control car race track is also in play, as well as a sidewalk 6 feet from the basket.

Hole 11: Tees directly over a handicapped parking spot and is unplayable when race track is in use. Road can be in play for bad shots.

Hole 12: straight and open parallel with road, but minimal safety issues.

Hole 13: Dangerous routes are highly rewarded. Shots over the basketball courts or neighboring private properties give the best outcomes. No difference in long and short tee.

Hole 14: lightly wooded hole, nothing memorable besides the wall of trees protecting the basket.

Hole 15: Odd long hole. You need to aim at the street corner to go around the trees. the basket is blind and not in a logical location. I had to ask a local where it was.

Hole 16: Picnic area in fairway, Occasional remote control boat users on fairway.

Hole 17: 100% unplayable. 7 cars were parked in the center of the fairway. we were forced to skip the hole.

Hole 18: Water and baseball field in play. There is very little landing area. Parking lot in play.

Other Thoughts:

Course is on a very busy park and plays far too close to everything.
Putting in a new course is not growing the sport if it can potentially injure other park goers and ruin the chances for any new courses in Charlotte County. This course crosses a line to negligence in its design.

Redesign In Progress 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 16, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is in the middle of a redesign and a new numbering system. Looks like it is going to be long and challenging with legit par 4's and 5's. I will update information as it becomes available and aim to play the hopefully mostly done new layout this weekend, weather permitting.

Other Thoughts:

Looking forward to trying the new layout and hoping some of the previous issues have been addressed.
