Nice enough course in a town center park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good baskets
Good Tee signs - very attractively done shame a map was not on each colour tee, but TBF that would probably be overkill as they are all close together and obvious which basket to throw too.
Some interesting lines to play
Busy Park but little used area for the course

Cons:

Short, very much pitch and putt
Some nasty rough patches but this is the worst time of the year for that so probably better at other times.
Some branches need to be cut back at tunnel entrances/exits
Poorly signposted from the reception.
Some dog walkers seem to use this as a cut through.

Other Thoughts:

So, cards on the table. This should have been a course I was designing and installing, unfortunately an unexpected hospital stay led to me missing the tender deadline and so it was awarded elsewhere.

I had a superb 9 hole layout worked out for the area and was really looking forward to this one, I think with the open, woods and elevation available it could have been up there with the best nine holers in the country. With that in mind and seeing some of the other reviews here I had avoided the course for a long time and was expecting to hate it.

I didn't.

It's a fun little 9 holer. Baskets are good and visible although some of the powder coating is starting to chip off, tee sign maps are lovely.

There don't need to be three tees for each hole, really the length of them warrant one or two at best, I would have liked to have seen angles played with more on the different tees to create different feeling holes rather than just longer. The reason there are three tees and it feels a bit forced?

Because my original layout had three positions on Blue holes that were 80 - 140 meters long and that's what the council tender was written too. Oh well. Don't leave your homework to the last minute kids. That would be my biggest frustration, I know there is a superb nine holer in the area, that is safe and fun and flows really well and what is there now is not to the same level but I can't criticise a course on that basis!

However, what is there now is good. It's a perfect introduction course to new players and as an experienced player I enjoyed throwing the holes.

It's worth a stop if travelling by and as a first time course for families looking for an activity it should do enough to get them going with the sport.

Not a destination for a day out 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Equipment is quite well maintained. Baskets, tees and signs are clearly visible
-There is some shot shaping and a few gaps to hit
-OK course to practice short game/go for ace runs
-Would be a good course to quickly introduce complete beginners to the sport
-Course is relatively quiet (odd walker comes through but shouldn't cause safety issues)

Cons:

-£5 for one round is ridiculous for this course
-There are some really uninteresting holes (completely open and flat)
-It really doesn't take that long to play (15 mins per round). Maybe a pro but if you have driven here you may get bored very quickly
-The course is nicely maintained aesthetically, but gaps can be shrunk by overgrowth that isn't maintianed
-Tee areas are really small and often have poor footing/foliage encroaching into them
-The three tee placements on each hole are completely redundant. The longest tees are pitch and putt length

Other Thoughts:

I had fun here running aces as a brief interlude to my train journey, but if this is your destination for the day I would recommend against it. Unless you're passing through it is not worth the travel. I hate to sound so negative and I wish it the best, but this is a course that needs some thought and attention.

There is no support for this course at all. Nobody runs events here and the park staff seem really uninformed about it. This is a weirdly well maintained course for how few visitors it gets and it really doesn't seem to serve a purpose. This could be fantastic place if it ran ace races or family events, or maybe if a long course was attached and this was a side attraction, but as a standalone it's really out of place.

A WASTED OPPORTUNITY.... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great for families with children under 7.
Can be played in no time if you are on your tea break.

Cons:

I don't know where to start.....
Short, boring holes.
Pay to play, but dog owners and chavs roam around on there for free.
Poorly designed, even for a family course.
This is why disc golf isn't taking off in the UK.....

Other Thoughts:

Sorry to be so negative, I felt angry and ripped off playing this course. Despite the fact that it is right on my doorstep I would rather set my own practice basket in the local playing field and throw at it from 9 different positions, than play this disappointingly boring course.

Great family course, so not for you! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Ideal family course. We had 3 generations playing at the same time.
- Great for complete beginners who have never thrown before.
- Good accessibility. Player in our group has mobility problems but managed ok in the woods with a little creative licence.
- Neat and tidy, well maintained.
- Ice cream van on the way to the 1st tee (not always there!)
- Kids loved playing with the app on the way round.
- Gorgeous swirly patterned discs. Didn't want to give them back!

Cons:

- Too short for pros/experienced players. I see that.
- A pointer by the basket to the next tee would be nice, but not essential.
- Lack of a tee line made for occasional opportunistic advances on the drive.

Other Thoughts:

Found my way here after playing my first ever round of disc golf at Telford last summer, and am looking round for more local courses to play this year. Wow. Thought I'd chip in with my tuppence for some perspective.

I was a beginner when I played the course, probably hadn't thrown a Frisbee since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, same as the rest of the family. We meet up with friends every now and then in the park, and on a glorious summer's day went for a picnic, football and ice cream and spotted the signs for disc golf by the ice cream van. One of the dad's had played in NZ a few years back and persuaded us all to fork out for a go.

Things didn't start out well as the kids were having a practice and an enthusiastic but highly errant throw hit one of the adults in the head. #1 rule on the scorecard was safety. Lesson learned. Easy to find the map and first tee. Everyone wants to be a hero, so we all started on the long tee, but soon settled into a nice mix where the little ones were throwing from the short tees and grown-ups from the medium or long. Only down side there is that the kids have to watch the olds throw and wait for theirs, but there was always plenty of banter around the basket as we're trying to get a better score than the others. Plenty of trees for beginners to avoid/hit, and what looked like an easy shot off the tee soon became more difficult after a wayward drive. Loved the signs all over the place, made it feel like we were doing something proper. The whole place was well looked-after and you had to go out of your way to find any litter.

And here's the thing... we had a whole shed load of fun playing. We were all together, talking, laughing and had an absolute blast. Probably shouldn't have done, but some of us snuck around again before handing the discs back. The 'pro' in the group was getting close to the basket on almost every hole, and gave us loads of tips on how to throw. He no doubt found it too easy (but didn't complain) but that just served to inspire the little' uns by showing them what a Frisbee (sorry, disc!) can do in the right hands. Got a real thrill on the second time round at having a go at a hole-in-one on holes 7 and 9 as they started to get into range.

From what I've seen on YouTube and the likes, 'Tour' type cources have very long holes, and sometimes you can't see the basket. The course is bounded on all sides so you could maybe get 3 or 4 of that sort of hole here at a squeeze? If that had been the case at Telford, it would have been a complete fail as a family activity and I've have felt robbed as we'd only have played a couple of holes. One of the group has mobility problems but was still able to enjoy being a part of the game on a level with eveyone else, and anything that provides that possibility is a win in my book. The 'app' was a touch of genius and the kids loved scanning the codes on all the signs. Only downer here was there was no GPS location on the map, but I'm picking nits here :) If I was going to pick more nits, a couple of holes might have benefitted from a pointer to the next hole, but I think you can see the next tee from the basket on each hole if you know where to look. Some would shuffle forward on the tees as there was no defined line, but just added to the enjoyment pointing it out!

So easy to see the positives here. If the aim of the course was to get people up and having fun then Telford did just that for us. On top of that, we told our friends, some of whom have since been and really enjoyed themselves. If I ever get as good as the folks on YouTube, I doubt I'll be coming to Telford to hone my skills often, but in my line of work you teach someone to play chopsticks before hitting them with Rachmaninoff's 3rd! I don't know why the course is how it is, and I'm not good enough to know good design from bad design, but it says on some directories that it's 'family-friendly' and that's precisely what it is. Fun factor 10 on my boat! As a first-time player it got me interested, which lead me here to find more courses, and as it's generally the experienced players that expect more from a course and review them then there's going to be a bias here. So, if you're reading this then Telford most likely isn't for you, but I'm offering an alternative view. It's my first course, my home course, and on the day we played it was perfect. I'll always love it for that.

Huge disappointment 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Busy park setting close to town center and accessible to many many people.

- Tee signs are nice and well designed.

Cons:

- Good God.

- I believe someone was paid to design this.

- Telford Town Park got ripped off.

Other Thoughts:

Hard to describe my disappointment with this. Travelled an hour South with huge excitement to play a brand new UK course. Great, or so I thought.

Walked to the course after parking as suggested on the page here. Course was easy to find near to the activity center in the middle, location at least is great. You have to go in and pay and the staff knew what they were doing which waas good (not always the case in this country with courses!)

As I walked to the course my first thought was, what are those baskets? Powder coated horrendous bright Orange ugly Mach v's. Without the Orange I was already disappointed enough, I thougt I had left Mach V's at home in Michigan, I thought the Brits were sensible enough not to use these piece of **** spit out machines. Hey, I suppose it is a basket at least.

Then i played the course. My already underwhelming experience went downhill from there.

I don't mind pay to play courses, this is despite having some excellent free to play courses within an hour of here (Bedworth and Longford park (i've got to do a review of this excellent course still) but I do mind pay to play when there has clearly been no thought put into the design.

None whatsoever.

This is not a course, it's 9 baskets sunk in the ground with a few painted rocks chucked down in lines and signs screwed on. Don't think I have played anything by this designer before, I will not rush to play another one.

Whatever limitations there were on designs in the area (and I do understand that limits designers in busy parks like these) I genuninely can't see how someone could make a course as bad with the trees and land in the surrounding area that all appears to have been allocated for the course.

Tees are marked as Red, White, Blue. They're not, or certainly not by US standards. They're Green, Green Green, I could throw my minis (and not the mini drivers) off each tee and shoot underpar, wrong handed, standing on one leg, backwards whilst being chased by the off the leash dogs. (yep there are dogs again)

The course is just bad, all of it. There isn't a shaped shot to throw,

I can see it being ok to get beginners starting to play but if you have ever thrown a disc previously, don't bother here you'll be very very sad,

I paid £4.50 for parking (there are cheaper options available I found out later adding to my anger) and then £5 to play one round that took less than 30 minutes. I had driven an hour. I want my money back, and a few hours of life returned. Not sure how anyone can rate this course above a 2 unless they are in some way related to the course designer? My 1 might be tough but three days after playing I'm still pi$$ed and writing this i'm struggling not to change it to 0.5.

Short and expensive 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is situated in a truly brilliant park full of activities, which would make for a pretty great day out. The course itself boasts three tee positions for every hole and is great for total beginners as the short tees are basically just simple putting stations. I liked the tee signs on the coloured rocks and found the course very easy to navigate.

The course is well looked after and apart from a few brambles and nettles the rough is rather short so it's almost impossible to lose a disc here

Cons:

Sad to say it but the course is, to be honest, overpriced and quite dull. The longest hole is 60m from the furthest tee and the last hole is just 30m! Many of the holes feel rather generic with only two really asking for any kind of shot shaping... otherwise it's just point and shoot putter approaches. The two tunnel tee shots are a welcome change but there's just not enough meat on this course to satisfy, even for a poor quality recreational division player!

I also have to say that £5 for a round of golf on which you likely won't make more than 30 throws is honestly just asking too much! I wish there was a day rate so I could play as many times as I wanted and chase the course record but for the price asked, you get roughly 30 mins of golf? For the same price at other pay to play courses you get a full 18 holes and even on other "short" courses you get a more interesting set of challenges to face.

Other Thoughts:

Feel bad leaving such a negative review but after an hours drive, plus £2 parking AND £5 a head for the actual round, I just expected a lot more than this. It's a fun enough pitch and putt but for "proper course" prices I think players deserve a bit more. It also feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity as the space the course is installed into has a great mix of open land and wooded sections so it feels like a more ambitious layout could have been possible that retained the accessible short tees for the kiddies but also offered a couple of real drives from the long tees to show punters what disc golf can really be.

All in all, a bit of a missed opportunity I think.

Very beginner friendly 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

In a quiet area of a busy public park, so lots of people about to play, as we waited to pay everyone else in the que was returning discs having just played so lots of people are trying out disc golf.
A short visible course, with lots of signage around the park advertising it, good for complete beginners, with 3 tees per hole clearly marked - so a group of mixed age or ability could play from different tees to even out the scores if they wanted... the tees are pretty much each 1/3 of the length of each hole. (E.g. Red 20m, white 40m, blue 60m)
Lots of parking as its telford town centre (telford being a new town the centre is just a big shopping centre which butts up to the park)

Cons:

Whilst great for complete beginners, the course is not very interesting for existing disc golfers, all short holes and not much variety, though the gaps are tight on the wooded holes, mostly its pitch and putt.
£5 deposit, whether you have a disc or not - staff didn't make us have a disc (we have our own) but said they still had to charge the £5 deposit (thus making me wonder what would happen when we came back after the round as we hadn't got hire discs to return... but it worked as it was the same staff, and they give out clipboards for scoring as well, so we returned that) just a bit weird.
The course is so short it only took about 20 minutes to play - though we had seen many people returning discs we didnt come across anyone else whilst playing so played straight though.

Other Thoughts:

Great if you're with a complete beginner, but If already a disc golfer looking for a fun and challenging course, id give it a miss. We were in Telford overnight and had planned to play again the next day, but didn't feel it was a good use of time or money (whereas the high ropes in the park was an excellent use of both.)
This review may have been slightly clouded by the fact that we had played Lichfield on the way to Telford, which is a fantastic 18 hole course.

A mix of shot required 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baskets - New Mach V's have been used here. They are all powder painted orange (even the chains), which makes the baskets both super standout, but also really grippy.

Signage - every hole has a map attached to the blue tee stone. It shows a full hole layout as well as the direction of the next tee

Tees - There are 3 courses to choose from here (Advanced blue; Intermediate White; Beginner Red). However an advanced player can still enjoy the Red course if it is used as putting practice only.

Layout - For a course in a public park, and set in a compact area... there are no path crossings to be aware of. This allows the thrower the freedom to throw their shot without concern.

Cons:

Pay to Play - Please sign in and pay to the Visitors centre (not the high ropes course next to the course, the visitors centre is near the boating lake). For some this will be seen as a con however if it means that the site is constantly being looked after by the grounds staff then it can be seen as a con.

Other Thoughts:

I will now try and paint a picture of each hole so that you have a rough idea of what the course looks like. All my descriptions are taken from the Advanced tees.

Hole 1 - A downhill hole, from a wooded tunnel tee. The basket is guarded by a couple of bushes and a hedge off to the left, but this shouldn't come into play

Hole 2 - Another downhill shot. Tunnel shot, with a low ceiling to match. If you can find the gap, then you should be able to get close.

Hole 3 - A wide open hole in the middle of the grass. No obstacles or dangers to worry about. For an experienced player this hole may be quite boring.

Hole 4 - A blind tee shot, dogleg left. A wild flower area is being created on the right, please play this as OB.

Hole 5 - An open tee shot, which funnels to the basket in the trees. Be careful not to drift left of the basket as the nettles and wild raspberries will eat your discs

Hole 6 - Signature hole on the course. A downhill shot, through a beech avenue. The hole bends to the left with thick bramble if you stray off line.

Hole 7 - A short uphill shot required here. Be careful not to overshoot as the chestnut trees behind will hinder your putts

Hole 8 - A tunnel tee shot across open ground. The basket is guarded by a hawthorn tree. A bramble hedge long of the basket is extremely thick so try not to throw long

Hole 9 - A very short hole to end, low ceiling by the basket may cause a few issues, but should be an easy birdie to end your round
