What's Holding Disc Golf Back

I skipped pages 6-10 so this may have been said, but I don't think anything is holding the sport back. My local course sits in a public park with soccer and softball fields, playgrounds, pavilions, fishing ponds, and some very nice walking/biking trails. AT LEAST once every round I'm approached by someone who was at the park enjoying one of the non dg related features of the park asking about disc golf, saying how much fun it looks, asking about the discs, etc. I try and let each and every curious passerby throw a few and encourage them to join me for the rest of the round( who really throws all 20 discs they carry?). 9 times out of 10 the said person just became a casual disc golfer, and they pass that on to their friends and family. You want the sport to grow? Be an ambassador to the sport... Educate the noobs and try and help their game. Answer questions. Nobody is going tonwant to play a sport that is VERY difficult to master when the top players are d***s.

I agree 100%

Not sure what has been said regarding what is keeping disc golf from growing, but my current view is this:

From an outsiders perspective, Disc Golf is a "game" played by a stereotype of pot smokers, hippies, punk kids, non-athletes, tree huggers, etc... So the debate continues, in order to make the game well known and respected a few key things must be taken into effect. First of all marijuana use on the course must be forbidden. Too many people view it as a way for people to get out and get high.
Respect the sport, if we want it to grow nationwide we must go out and play it as "ball golf" is. I'm not saying go out in khakis and a polo for every round. But don't go out with a blunt and a beer either. If we want the sport to grow then we need to approach it as any other sport.

dumb threads about what's holding disc golf back are holding disc golf back.

op: why if disc golf not mainstream like real (insert whatever)?

rest of thread: airing the dirty, dirty laundry of disc golf, personal pet peeves used as explanation, and a bunch of flaming.

i know, right. top pros are so approachable in other sports. like when i told my dad i liked baseball and he asked ryne sandburg if he could come to our house to give me a lesson and he totally did.

So casual "ball golfers" don't drink or smoke? Don't kid yourself. Who's respect are you looking for?

I started playing disc golf more because of the elitist douchebag mentality that presides on most all ball golf courses. I learned this at a very early age, when I first became a ball golf caddie as a kid.
Golf has a ton of money involved, because its a game for rich people. Five and six figure yearly membership dues, monthly minimum food and beverage tabs, and expensive clubs.
This is what generates the revenue necessary to promote big tournaments.
Every podiatrist and sports medicine doctor out there pays huge dues to get that one shot at a new Caddie STS on a sunday afternoon.

This is exactly opposite of what disc golf has always been about

Disc golf is a fun game, and should never be a serious sport.

Today, instead of playing, I spent 4 hours of quality time weed whacking my favorite course.
This is a hard course, a 7000' par 54, not a pitch and putt.
The biggest thing I learn from spending that much time out there, on a regular basis is, ITS STILL 95% RECREATIONAL PLAYERS.

Families, couples, buncha guys all carrying one disc each, laughing and trash talking, throwing 50 foot rainbow hyzers, highfiving the guy that gets a par on the 250' hole.
This is what makes up the disc golf community, for the most part.

We all just want to have fun out there. FUN.

There is probably 10 people in the country that would benefit from this becoming as big time sport, the rest of us just want something we can enjoy.

Blunts, beers, dogs, babies in strollers and boomboxes are all just part of the color that is disc golf.

If you want to start a campaign to clean up the sport, you should start with the #1 ranked player in the world.
Dave smokes cigarettes.
Cigarettes are a far more carcinogeric and harmful substance than weed is, proven in many medical studies, and yet, here he is, the most accomplished player on the planet, Innovas biggest role model, puffing away.

What kind of an example is he setting for the children ? :(

So go, clean up smokey Dave.

No, my friend. It's things like these that cause parks departments to pull courses because residents surrounding courses and other non disc golfing park goers don't want that stuff there. They complain enough, then BAM!! A course is pulled and screws those of us that DON'T NEED those things to go out and enjoy a round of DG.

^No, it's not. Oak Grove is the 1st disc golf course ever, and all of those exist there. So, maybe a bunch of penises have moved into your neighborhood, but it is clearly NOT what is killing disc golf ;)

I never said it was killing disc golf. I never said anything is killing disc golf. I just have a little bitterness because "blunts and beers" being on the course is a sterotype that I wish wasn't associated with all golfers. Truthfully, at times I get a little offended when I'm playing a round and a complete stranger asks me to "partake." Not everyone that plays dg lives that lifestyle. For all those people know, I could be an off duty cop that plays disc golf. I just think some people don't use their head sometimes.

i agree with you.. when i tell people i play DG they're like oo uhh pot head... and im like no i am actually very competitive with it lol.... stupid bad name for DG

nothings holdin disc back but jokers like you marty. this sport has been growing like wildfire within the past few years. who are you to call out an innumerable group of people you dont even know? dress code? mf'r if thats what you think it takes you're gonna be barkin up trees for a solid minute. why do you even throw disc? if you question anything you dont belong. bottom line. pick up bowling or softball. waste time elsewhere..

If anyone out there knows any famous people, local celebrities, or even a politician. Maybe they could invite them out to play.
Where they go the press goes.

I would invite former president Bill Cinton, Snoop Doggy Dog, and Tommy Chong out for a round. That would be interesting!
