Emotional attachment putter dilemma. Need help.

So, maybe it's not the disc, maybe it's you needing to stick with it for a while longer and you'll eventually see gains in consistency and range.

If I could keep from death gripping a putter when I am in a competitive round, a soft Wizard would be fine. I am a push putter, I don't really ever blow by the basket except for the occasional unexpected gust of wind.

The difference the Aero is making it is hyzers over much slower, typically staying flatter. Also, I noticed, but maybe it is just me, that with the slower hyzer, the disc seems to be slower going into the basket, so in one sense what you said does come into effect, because a Wizard is like a slam on the brake at the end, where the Aero is a longer, slower press on the brake. ...if you get the corny analogy. The Wizard seems to fall a lot faster.

If you've only been playing for one season, the Wizards haven't had enough time to break in. Discs like putters have a long life cycle. The beat to **** DX Aviar I carry for finesse putts, approaches, and drives has been in my bag for 3 years now. It's one of the two or three discs I throw most often and I don't see it coming out anytime soon.

Switching to a lighter Wizard is also a good option. If you're digging the Aero there is nothing wrong with that either, but I wouldn't ditch all your Wizards. You don't see many people using the Aero exclusively for a reason, and it's likely you'll want to revisit Wizards later.

All putters roll away*, even the Aero. It's a lot easier and better in the long run to make an adjustment putting rather than try different putters all the time. And Gateway's Soft putters are usually very firm, it's the SSS and some SS that would suffer your "death grip."

*except Blowflies and x-link soft Vibram but those are ridiculously soft.

Uh, actually I've had a 50 ft rollaway with a Blowfly once.  :wall:

I'm not convinced that soft putters are all that useful for preventing rollaways. I've seen plenty of floppy putters bounce up on edge when they hit the ground.

Yeah, soft putters are just as bad for sure, I have an equal amount of rollaways no matter the stiffness of magic I use.

I was lucky enough to not get caught in all the wizard fever before i discovered this dilemma. wizards just didnt fit my putting style. then i gave the ion a try, the feel of a traditional wizard with more glide and stability, but without the rollaways and plastic inconsistencies. I quickly discovered the ion really fights the wind well for such a smal bead, and whether light or heavy, the soft ions are amazing putters, once you figure out how it glides, (because it glides almost too much) It has earned its place in my bag and kicked the wizard out. in about a week i have cummulated 4 ions, two in the 172 range and 2 in the 175 range and i will probably never take them out, just give the ion a try, i promise you will not be disappointed

Rollaways are a part of the game... Like wind and trees. Course designers use pitch on a green for this reason. Otherwise, they would only put baskets on flat surfaces (and you would still get an occasional rollaway). That said, I tried to hold to the challenger because it was "popular" although I wouldn't have said/thought that and when I finally found a putter that matched my style of play I learned to use it and am happy.

Sounds like that's what you did... don't stay attached to wizards because they're popular. They really do have crappy glide which is either your thing or it isn't.

My $.02

the bigger problem is that your confidence circle is only 20 feet

Screw it!

I gave up on the Wizard and have improved my short game tremendously. Use what works. emotional attachments are for Democrats! :p

The Mako is one more in speed, 4 to Aero's 3, and one less in glide, 5 to Aero's 6.

What do you normally putt with?

I normally put with an Omega SS. I felt pretty good with it before today, but now I'm starting to wonder...

I had kinda the same dilemma... Being a spin putter, I putted with Challengers for a long time but the roll away's weren't my problem. My problem was playing with the fade of the Challenger outside 30ft. So I asked Hysell and of course he recommended a soft Magnet(Thank You Mr. Hysell!). After forcing myself to use it for a few weeks and then at a tournament, I've never looked at my Challengers the same way for putting purposes. I hit a LOT more putts outside and inside 30ft with my soft Magnet. I still use the Challenger for driving though!!
If the Aero works, use it! The wizards are a great driving putter too. Don't get rid of them!;)

My soft magic solved some of the problems you described.

If you putt 100% from 30' you won't have that problem :p

Seriously, putters are the most personal disc IMHO.

I would not consider switching if I didn't see a real difference in my game. I love the disc, Wizard, and I am keeping one in for driving, but around the green I am going to give the Aero a fair try, because so far I have scored well with it.

Well in the end results are the most important thing. I'd just be worried it's an issue of switching discs temporarily fixing the problem, but it still persisting in the long run. Really, no matter if you're throwing Aero's or Wizard's or 10m bricks or Destroyers, you should feel confident from 20-30' if you're playing tournies. Whatever you find that works best for you, just practice with it like hell.

I putted for Wizards for a while and thought they did me fine. I tried out Magics and realized I putted a lot better going straight at the chains rather than trying to hyzer my putter at the basket and let it drop in. Tried Ions and they fly dead straight without the touchiness of a Magic. Maybe you just need to change your putting style? You could try posting a video of yourself throwing some putts too and see if anyone here can offer some advice.

My "inside" practice space only gives me about 16' to work with. So it will be next spring before I can really work on those longer putts every day.

I have watched a lot of Feldberg videos, and that is how I putt, fundamentals anyways. If I get a chance, I will video, and start at 20, then 25, then 30 throwing Wizards and the Aero.

Try a Warlock (Beadless Wizard) or Magic (glidier like an Aero) Both take less effort to get to basket from far out. I'm a Wizard guy. 175 close, 168 for far out or awkward stance/angle.
