Just wondering how many different grips you guys use for your backhand throws. Personally, I use 3-- the four finger power grip for distance drives, the birdie grip for mid-range discs and control drives, and the fan grip with index finger on rim for putts and approaches using the putter up to 200'. Just trying to see if it's normal to switch up your grip for different types of throws and distances.

power grip for drivers, fan for putters, hybrid of those two for mids or other discs with tall rim sections...

3 and 4 finger power grip on drivers and mids, 3 finger power grip on longer putter shots and fan grip for shorter putts.

It depends. I usually use the four finger power grip when I'm throwing with power. If I need to use finesse, I use a fork grip. 99.99% of the time on drivers I use a power grip. Probably 99.99% of the time when I'm throwing a putter I use a power grip. Mid range shots go 70/30 fork grip/power grip. I throw mids so much of the time that it actually balances the whole thing out to about 50/50 between the two grips.

I'm not sure why, but putters give me fits. I've tried all sorts of different grips, but the only grip I seem to get a smooth release with from a putter is the power grip. It makes no sense at all and I would not recommend that strategy to others, but it works for me. I've always guessed that it has something to do with my short fat fingers. I just can't seem to wrap any other sort of grip comfortably around the deep rims of putters.

For actual putting I use a kind-of, sort-of fan grip...in other words I have no idea what I'm doing when I putt and I change my grip seven or eight times a year trying to figure it out. :(

Yeah, it is certainly common to switch it up. I have three grips that I use: 4 finger power, Rim pointer and super fan. Obviously they are all for different trypes of shots and discs for that matter. I cannot do a power grip on a midrange and even my TLs are pushing the limits of the power grip.

Three finger power grip for everything but putting. For putting I put my index finger along the outside rim of the disc and three fingers under.

Same as Neophyte, only I'll sometimes use a fan grip for mids that have a deep, squarish rim, since they tend to hang on my fingers and grip-lock if I try to throw them with a power grip. This is especially true with my Cro, Coyote, and Aviar putter.

x2

Thats exactly how I do it

I use a fork type grip for drives and a fan style grip for approaches. Putting wise I use a fan grip but it is a little bit different than the fan grip I use on approaches. Its more loose and the points of pressure are more focused on the flight plate as opposed to near the rim.

I use both the 3 and 4 finger power grip for drives. Mid range shots, approaches, and putting all get the fan treatment.

Three finger grip for everything, even short upshots. So long as you aren't gripping so hard that when your hand "turns the corner" the disc won't eject, it'll come out on the proper angle.

I've messed around with the fan grip for shorter upshots, but I'm more comfortable keeping the same grip for everything.

(I searched for "how many grips" and got only this thread, so I'm bumping a fairly old one. It has a poll and everything! :D)

4 finger power grip for drivers and mid-ranges.
2 finger (pinky and index) with other 2 fanned out for putter throws and putts.

(and 3 finger for max d, competition style distance lines, but I don't count that)
