About to ditch the high-speed drivers.

I'm right there with you. I don't throw anything over a speed 10 because I have no reason to. I can throw a TL just as far as a Katana, and I have more control over it. Of course I throw some "maximum distance" drivers by Discraft, but those aren't wide rimmed. The Avenger SS is about a speed 7 by Innova's standards. I have a friend who prefers wide discs, but he only throws sidearm, where the grip isn't affected as much (as far as I can tell). I tried throwing a whole round with a Buzzz and got destroyed, but mixing in some fairway drivers off the tee I can do better than I would with Archons, Wraiths, and Katanas.
the avenger as is quite a bit faster than 7.

The only problem I've been having lately is when I do get a good rip on a fairway driver, I over power it, and it turns over. So I think I'll still keep the max D stuff, just need to know when to use them. I'm getting pretty close to hitting 500' with the Vulcan. The Force makes a longer and more gradual left turn than any of my fairways. Thanks to everyone for their input!

I started playing disc golf about 15 years ago. I played for about 3 years, then quit playing up until about a year ago. When I started playing, discs like the Viper and Banshee were the " maximum distance" drivers. Since my return to the sport, I've tried several of these new high-speed discs. I've had some pretty good drives, but more bad than good. I'm getting to the point where I can throw putters and mids 300+ feet, with consitent accuracy. I was wondering if there was anyone else who felt the same. There certainly isn't anyone that I've played with lately that doesn't seem to have several 12 & 13 speed drivers in their bag. I'm not totally ready to go the way of the slower discs, however I've been getting drives over 400' with an Eagle, Cheetah, and Banshee. The Hornet has been my "go-to" disc. That thing freakin' bombs!

I only use my high speed if I can not reach with my Teebird. Of course, my Teebird is in the 320' range, and my high speed can get out there to 370'.

If I was you, I would carry a high speed driver, but of course, never use it unless you absolutely are going over 400'.

I use a boss or nuke on any hole which is 380+ and I don't see any problem with it since my orc maxes out at 360. That means I use one for 27 of the 36 holes on my favorite 2 courses.

This was the best decision I have made. No more high speed discs for me. I heard that Eric McCabe was throwing a Meteor 400'. I got to thinking, it can't be because he has more power than I do. If you overpower a Meteor, it will turn and burn. It must be good form and a smooth release. Now I too can throw a Meteor 400'. Of course it's not the choice for a headwind. That's what the Eagle is for.

As Master Yoda said "Control, you must learn control" Since I have disc'd down I find that when I slip in some high speed stuff Blizzard Katana I have gained more control and more distance. I think that discing down allows you to grade your form.

There's only really one course around here (Deis Hill in Dover, OH) where there would be any need to throw over 500'. The course in Canton has a couple longer holes, but it's so wide-open that par comes easy. Many of the longer holes at other courses have enough obstacles on the fairway that you wouldn't want the Max D drivers. Check out hole 9 at the Portage Lakes course in Ohio. By far the toughest hole I have ever played. Being able to throw 500' means nothing if you can't sink a 30' putt without even thinking about it.

Go for birdies from Arboretums long tees then :D

Deis Hill is a blast. I need to go there before snow hits us.

Today I decided to try the disc down as I am really crappy and inconsistent at driving. I teed off the majority of the holes with a midrange star coyot. My drives were the most consistent I have had in years. I was able to get the coyote close to 200 feet most of the time which is impressive for me. Im much better at the short game which is good, but my driving game sucks. I have improved today by just driving my mid. I will play the next round with my mid and see if I can be more consistent and longer drives.

On the weekdays, I drive 1-2 holes with a distance driver (usually uphill or the big downhill bomb because I can park it under the basket) Other then that I throw a fairway or mid. I played today and was throwing my wasp 310' ish, and it was my first day using it. It brought back hope for mid ranges :D

I have yet to play the long tees at Arboretum. Every time I go, everyone I'm with plays the short tees. I played with you a few weeks ago Mike. You caught up with us at hole 10 at Canton. I was with Moose, Dan, and Dominic. Remember I was messing around with the 360° drives.

Is there one site that has most all discs and their "speed" rating?

discgolfcenter.com has flight numbers for all discs that seem pretty accurate. Some are a little off in my opinion. You may also look at discgolfreview.com under the "disc reviews" section. The site has their own system for all manufacturers which is helpful but may be confusing if you gauge everything off of how Innova sets flight numbers.

I have to agree those who are wondering why you'd want to limit yourself based on a number stamped on a disc or posted on a web site? Not all high-speed drivers feel the same. Throw everything at least once, and keep throwing what works. Believe it or not, there are people who can bomb a Legacy Canon accurately.

You don't get it.

Just because someone can "bomb a Canon accurately" doesn't mean they have good technique. I know lots of people that can "bomb" drives, but can't throw a Roc or putter to save their life.

Haha. I'm glad I don't get it, then. I throw frisbees for fun. The ones that go far, I throw when I need a frisbee to go far. The ones that don't fly far, I don't throw when I need a frisbee to go far. That much I get. Some folks over think this simple game, but you gotta love the purists.

I think you'll find that you could learn a few things from those of us that "over-think this game". You go out and throw your Cannon far and have fun. I'll go out and throw my Teebird further, have fun, and beat you. You would be surprised what you can learn from those that have more experience, if you open your mind.

The OP wants to improve his game, so he is asking for some advice. If you're not interested in that, then why do you take the time to read and chime in?

Take your own advise, son. Re-read my posts and get back to me. You obviously aren't getting it.

You probably know better than everyone else here with your 8 months of experience. Please go on.....

Forehand: Do you know the reasoning behind discing down and throwing slower drivers, mids, and putters is?

OK. If you're playing with guys who can't throw Rocs but keep throwing Rocs, and can't putt but only work on their driving, then I would love to give you this piece of advice, grasshopper:

DITCH THE ROC AND PRACTICE PUTTING!

I guess it takes a newbie to point out the obvious. Hope this helped.
