Wind direction test.

Some people play casual rounds like they play competitive rounds.

Practice like you want to play.

Hence the grass-wind test.

The prevailing wind might change very little in KS, but that isn't the case everywhere. Fun (general) fact: Most of the time, if you put your back to the wind, the approaching storm front will be coming from your left. Try it sometime. Its rarely been wrong for me.

Well. Most storms come from the southwest...so yeah, there's a general fact. But not all storms do, so not a given. I guess I'm just content with being able to tell wind direction with my surroundings in a quick amount of time. Don't see any pros throwing grass mind you.

i do it. oddly enough i dont when im putting though when its really important. now ill start. thanks op see you at the course

Apparently you haven't ever watched any tourney videos...

Nikko does this more than any pro I have ever seen.

Eh not a big fan of Nikko so no, I don't pay attention to him. But I do watch tourney vids, I pay more attention to wysocki and McBeth as they tend to be better.

To the OP, you did say casual round right? That means you have the CHOICE not to throw with them. If it bothers you so much, find others to play with. There are plenty of people that don't care about wind direction while throwing. You can usually find them in groups of 6-10 people and they are all playing with one disc. Which is usually a Destroyer or Nuke OS that they are throwing about 125 feet. You know, we call them chuckers my friend.

Man, how did I ever take second in the last tourney I played in, I never threw anything in the air to judge wind direction!? I must have been just a lucky "disc chucker" as you say...Sheeshx I'll never learn.

nice. start checking the wind and youll be able to bag rec division no problem

just like everyone has a little diff grip... everyone has diff things they do before throwing.
last week we played a round w/ a guy who kept playing the same 3 songs over and over on his phone.
i didn't really care for his choice of tunes... or the frequency of them.... so whenever i had a chance, i would intentionally throw FH... just so i wouldn't have to walk the entire fairway w/ him. adapt and overcome.
oh... btw... i did throw some crappy tee shots, but thats not totally unusual... but i did play my best round on that course by 3 strokes.

Not a Nikko "fan" either (even though he can throw AND adds entertainment value), just pointing out I see him do the grass grab wind check.

I like several Pros, here is a short list to name a few:

Simon, Avery, Paul, Big Jerm, Feldy and Jussi.

I consider casual rounds anything but a tournament. It doesnt really bother me, i just cant figure out why people do it, as i said, unless you are over a 970 rated player i imagine that there are a lot more things than exact wind direction affecting shot placement. I have never checked wind direction, i just moved to a new town, i have played 3 weeks in the league, tied the course record twice, and beat it by 3 strokes. The previous record holder was rated 940. Pretty sure im not a chucker, and pretty sure every no one who checks the wind has ever beaten me in a round

You must be lying, all the meteorologists on here who check the wind say that if you don't, you will have a terrible round

I asked McBeth and he says yes he throws grass in the air but tends to just kick the dirt and see which direction it blows. So I stand corrected

But kicking the dirt seems quicker and tournament friendly to me.

It doesn't bother me at all when people throw grass around. I turn my face directly into the wind to determine direction. To each their own. Living in Texas where the wind will swirl and change directions, I look at the tops of trees and other vegetation down the fairway for wind currents on ahead. Throwing grass really doesn't help you to recognise what's happening down the fairway.

This sounds like my home course as well. The wind changes, swirls and gusts different directions during a round. This is the best advice I have seen in this thread.

Watching trees at different distances and heights will tell you more than what happens around where you tee from AND will let you know where and how high/low you can throw for the best outcome.

Conditions down the fairway are more important than what is happening off the box, unless you are attempting to drive into a Monster headwind .

lol! Priceless /\/\ :hfive:

I'll do it from time to time. Sometimes I'll just see what the guys disc does before me and make choices based on that. I think the OP needs to go vent about this at DGR. Someone there might listen. ooooohhhh! :p
