Anyone heard of this 16yr old distance record holder?

It sounds cool until you remember there was insane winds like 40+ mph when all these records were broken. Still a feat but meh

970+ft is definitely a feat, doesn't matter the winds.

Reading that article was painful. Leaving HS in favor of home schooling so he can have more time to focus on disc golf? That doesn't sound like the best idea.

Those winds were WAY over 30 mph, the players were having trouble standing up. The fact that the old record was beaten by hundreds of feet makes that competition laughable.

Last years distance competition needs to be deleted for the integrity of the record and so it will be attainable down the road. Boo on everyone that allowed that to happen for the sake of 30 seconds of fame.

Yes the winds were crazy -- for everyone -- but only 2 others threw further, and they are top pros. This is a 16 yr old unknown, so I was surprised it wasn't mentioned anywhere.

This kid could potentially make hundreds of doll hairs.

Wysocki was home-schooled and lived across the street from a course. His school day was over at lunch and he'd spend all afternoon practicing according to a PDGA mag article a few years back

There are quite a few great players out here in CA that the rest of the country doesn't know about.

I, too, would like to see these distance records without the aid of the wind.

Right, but I would HOPE his parents didn't make the decision to home school him so that he can have more time to practice disc golf.

Considering there is no 401K or retirement plans for professional disc golfers, I would hope that some of these kids coming up don't expect to get rich off of disc golf.

Not everyone can make McBeth money.

Even Climo had a real job.

Education is important unless you want to be delivering pizzas at 60 years old.

+1 bagillion

Proper record for distance lies with Sandstrom. This event spits in his face and the prior record holders as well. It was probably a bitter enough pill for all the classic bombers like Malafronte and Johnson to get smoked by new hi tech discs, but to get smoked by ultra hi tech discs in ridiculous wind is stupid.

RE: Home schooling

Is this really any different than any of the sports based magnet schools, or keeping your kid at home to get more time in figure skating / gymnastics/ anything? I mean the payoff is much greater for other sports, but the likelihood is sooooo much less.

Holly Finley had it correct. Disc golf is a small pool filled with genetically unfit fish. The odds of being a top player is relatively high compared to other sports, to counter the max payout being relatively low.

I didn't see that...they showed the clip on air, and the hosts laughed?

No, ESPN was interested in airing it until they saw the footage.
