2019 Pros Switching Sponsors Official Thread

The down side with Doss is that he seems to bag really simple setups with overstable stuff beat in for years, combined with his high pro level power...so normal people have no business or need to grab a stack of Preds and Forces and they know it.

If he got into commentary though I think he would move a ton of plastic regardless of that though, I think he'd be Discraft's Sexton.

He's a heck of a commentator. I just think Bevel is his number one priority right now. I guess we'll see where he and Val will be at in their careers next season.

That's an absurd argument. Those same people will go pick up destroyers or firebirds and watch them hyzer out early too.

At least when you see a Doss ITB, he makes a point to say how long stuff has been in his bag also.

Any speculations on anyone leaving Trilogy?

I would not be surprised to see some of their players looking for alternative sponsorship, or even 'moving' within Trilogy brands.

'Trilogy' really seems like 3 separate business functions to me.
A. DD: Street Team (social media, appearances, etc.) * That's not to say that DD players can't be talented, but DD is kind of the marketing function for Trilogy. They need some talent on the team to provide credibility, but their main function is branding and growing the sport (I'm saying that seriously)
Disc sales are somewhat self-sustaining as this Tier introduces a lot of new players to the game. DD will become those (new) players' 'house' brand, and they'll likely continue to 'buy what they know'.
B. Westside: Seems like the farm team/AAA. Up and coming young players. Westside almost seems to have an 'underground' feel, like Gateway.
C. Latitude64°: PRO squad. These are the players that move inventory simply because they throw the mold. How many people do you think throw the Harp because of Ricky?

In my opinion, DD has gained a rep for the social media focus and 'signing' fringe players to 'pro' contracts. The people who are more vain could feel negative pressure from that stigma, especially the ones who are active on social media.

DD players that want to be taken seriously may ask to move to Lat or Westside if they can't find alternative sponsorship.

To be clear, I'm not saying there is anything with this. In my opinion 'Trilogy' is by far the most advanced (disc golf) manufacturer in terms of marketing and branding. They are growing the sport (whether you agree with the method or results is not the topic). More people are playing dosc golf because of them.

As a result of DD's focus on branding and growing the sport, I would not be surprised to see them become the biggest brand in the game over the next 5-10 years. In terms of competition, most manufacturers are trying to catch up with Innova in terms of units sold. They would be wiser to focus on catching up to DD's marketing strategy.

In terms of a CBA for disc golf, I would like to see some element of team competion added to the sport. At it's nature, it is an individual sport, but if there were some sort of point system among manufacturers that could make free agency even more interesting.

Honestly, it could almost be set up with a fantasy format. Each mfg picks what players to 'field' for each DGPT event. It would not be hard to develop a point system that would allow us to measure each manufactures' asset management, and crown a winner at the end of the season/year.

Anyway, back to speculation...

Seems like very few people have mentioned any of the FPO division...
There are a handful of new names in that conversation, so I would be surprised if we didn't see something on that side of the game.
Anyone else think the ladies are going to get a little more attention this off-season?

Bah! Horrible idea. The kool-aid drinkers are already bad enough, add a team element to it, it would destroy the feel good vibe of the sport.

I hope this never happens.

Conrad is a peculiarity, I still don't know if he can sell discs. lol.. Very cool, nice guy though. I tend to think most companies realize the "disc golf wave" is going to happen so there is definitely a balance of getting younger players on board. Paige Bjerkaas was a great find for DD and it wouldn't surprise me if they made her sign a much longer contract..years ago. lol.. Kevin Jones is in a great position if you ask me. Good looks combined with great talent. There is no doubt he has everyone's attention.

I have no doubt that JK sales have increased thanks Conrad's reliance on them. Don't know if that would translate to any other Conrad signature disc.

Oh they'll buy a couple but I just hope that people are self aware enough about their arm speed that they aren't going to have a flippy Pred, a straight Pred, a kind of stable Pred, etc. And Forces in general seem to be on the stable end, compared to the Destroyer acting as half a dozen different discs so people pick them up by the dozen to see what they get. I really haven't thrown enough Forces though to be honest, but I like the mold.

I agree with this. This isn't a team sport. The brands exist solely to sell plastic. There's no point in prancing our sport around under the charade of some unifying team aspect. I can only imagine how unbearable the DD squad would become if this came to fruition.

Like, say, guts with the team manufacturer's highest speed disc?

Tell me more about destroying the 'feel-good vibe of the sport'

We agree! This isn't a team sport. However, the brands exist for far more reason than to sell plastic. Another very handy feature is being a title sponsor of many of the very events we enjoy watching.

There's no charade or unification. There is an attempt (in this concept) to get the manufacturers to compete outside retail. It would be interesting (to me) to crown the 'best' manufacturer each year.

A peripheral benefit to this format would be a higher priority on performance. As a result, we may start to see the entourage shrink...

Anyone else watch this week's Smashboxx episode? Terry and JVD asked both Dickerson and Uli about Paul, and both of them just smiled and played dumb. It looked to me like they knew he was leaving and wanted so badly to break the news, but didn't want to be the one to do so. Just the looks on their faces told it all.

I have always thought there is a place for a big manufacturer team match play event... would probably need to run on the coattails of something else at first.

Here's somthing interesting....Word on the street is that Sexton was announced as the new Captain of the Innova Star Team for 2019 on the team only Facebook page. Mabye it's a coincidence, Mabye not...

I find this tidbit most interesting. Even if Paul stays with Innova, this is a nice nod to Nate for his performance in 2018 and his contributions to the Innova brand. Seems like the perfect person to take on the added responsibility of captain.

What are the responsibilities of a Captain though? Is Paul the current Captain? Not that it isn't great to see Nate getting some well-deserved recognition, but the position of Captain is not completely advertised.

No idea how Innova structures it, but in my experience, "Captain" is 50% honorary and 50% an extra conduit for the team members to communicate with the sponsor. He might be tasked with pushing team social media stuff or organizing team dinners or team rounds at a tournament, or nothing significant at all. Not really unlike a captain on a baseball or football team. Don't think it means extra pay and certainly it doesn't automatically mean the company is saying "this is our best/flagship/most important player".
