Discraft Memorial Day Mystery box results $99

Well Discraft did not force anyone to buy those boxes. . i feel like it was MENT to be a gamble, and when you gamble you sometimes win. . and often loose. .but in this case loosing means you get some stuff worth what you paid, but if you are lucky you get much more.

i dont relly get this "mystery box" hype that most of the companys and webbshops are selling. . when i buy someting i don´t want what i get to be a mystery ;)

It was a gamble and it was a sucker's bet. The thing is, Discraft stands behind it.

Some casinos rig the slots. It is alright, just find a different casino to toss your money blindly at. Out of the mystery boxes I've seen this is the most deadstock of all.

The house always wins

Mystery boxes are like white elephant games. I think it is fun, take a gamble, maybe you win and maybe not, won't end up empty handed though.

Still seems like the 3.2 lb. boxes are most likely grip bags...

My 4.2 pounder is set to arrive today, and whatever it is, will be whatever it is. I knew that when I hit the buy button.
Of course it was totally a gamble, in the same sense that bingo, slot machines, 50-50 raffles or really any raffle, and the lottery are gambles. Only unlike the others, at least I am guaranteed something. Two things actually: a surprise and whatever tangible goods come in the mail.
People play bingo (I hate... no abhor... bingo) to win crappier swag from the Oriental Trading Company
People play stupid games for tickets to win same garbage at Dave n Busters or Chuck E Cheese
People play the lottery
People buy into raffles (granted, these are usually just donations for whatever fundraiser is going on)
People play slots

Aside from raffle tickets which I buy to support whatever fundraiser it is, I don't bother with any of these other gambles because the odds are terrible and/or the prizes are worthless. In the case of this mystery box, I knew that I might be buying a $99 for a sportsack, a couple stickers, a trucker hat, and a max weight z nuke OS. I'd still rather have something like that than pay anything towards a lottery or pay $25 to sit through 2 hours of bingo (and gouge my eyes out)

The odds in this mystery box game were good: 100% at receiving something
I would hazard a guess that at least half of the "players" felt like they got at least half of their money's worth ($50) in prizes even though they might not have chosen those particular items if they had $50 to spend at the store
How many of these boxes do you think they sold? 100? 200? Let's say 1000.
If they had 20 chainstar lites and 10 chainstar whatevers and 20 GripEQ bags, that's 50 big ticket items or a 1 in 20 chance of winning a big item.
Personally, I think they were expecting to sell about 100 of them which would make the odds 1 in 2 which is in line with how much they were selling the Grip bags in the first place (ie buy two mystery boxes, you are even odds to win a big ticket item, priced around $200)

So now let's say if they expected 100 but sold 4x they sold 400. Even if they added no more big prizes, that's a 12.5% chance of winning a big ticket item (with the same 50 unit assumption I made earlier) Maybe they were telling the truth and they upped their prizes by a factor of two (100 big prizes). That's a 1 in 4 chance of winning something big.

I don't really see a problem with what Discraft did here. Anyone could have bought the same big items for the price of two mystery boxes, but instead played a game where they might win one of them for half the price. I played, and while whatever comes this afternoon might be a disappointment, it won't make me mad.

After seeing and reading about many mystery boxes, I guess I'm probably lucky I received what I did. I still haven't taken a picture of everything but here is the breakdown with the approximate retail prices of each item. I guess it's not as bad as it could have been that's for sure, but one question I have is WTF are you supposed to do with disc golf lanyards?

Ti Avenger ss $17.99 ?
Z Wasp $15.99
Z Vulture $15.99
Z Zone $15.99
Larger jawbreaker Buzzz mini $8.00
Can cover mini $4.00
Reusable scorecard $1.99
Discraft large Microfiber towel $9.99
Collectible Discraft pin $5.99
Discraft Two-Tone Performance T-Shirt $15.99
Green pullover sweatshirt $29.99
4 lanyards $11.99
Buzzz Thermos, double wall $24.99
Discraft sticker $1.00 ?
---------------------------------
Total retail: $179.89

That is actual robbery. I wouldn't even pay 50$ for 3 discs a random hoodie and miscellaneous cloth items.

It's actual gambling. Just like loot boxes in gaming. If you don't want to pay for an item and not get what you wanted, don't pay for unknowns.

I would agree that this pushes the lines of false-advertising. However, we've all seen how mystery boxes/add-ons go. There will be duds. It sucks, but that's why I don't buy the B.S.

"Play stupid games, win stupid prizes."

I will never purchase a different mystery box other than discmania.

I have a friend who has bought one or maybe two DM mystery boxes. It convinces me not to buy one. Personally, the misprint boxes are the only thing with good value, and that's if you know what kind of plastic you want. Discraft's 10-pack misprints have always been one of the best deals on the internet. But it's hard for me to blame Discraft for jumping on the "mystery box" bandwagon, which generates lots of sales and excitement along with disappointing at least 1/3 of the buyers.

I find it rather funny the reactions people have when they gamble and lose.

Sour grapes.

I play a lot of poker where the money mostly flows from folks playing long odds and missing. But every so often, they hit (like a slot machine) and it keeps them coming back. Games that are so tight because people only play and bet monster hands are awful tables, while on the other hand, profitable tables that are full of super loose cannons can also crack your own big hands. But people do weird stuff for swag. I once played a pot where the house donated a snuggie--a freaking snuggie-- into the pot and a guy at our table blindly bet $50 into the pot before the deal just to win it. Then he got mad when someone had the audacity to call him.

I mean, it's also reminiscent of the housing bubble days when folks were mad that their houses went down in value and their mortgage payments were "under water" so they just stopped paying them out of spite. Not every investment works out.

HAHAHAHA! From Discmania's email today on Summer Mystery boxes...
It's easy to be satisfied with a box because there is no implied expectation of items or value."
Yuuuup. "Don't expect anything and you won't be disappointed. Just give us your money for our leftovers."

Don't buy or don't kvetch.

Exactly. Its a freaking mystery box. You give them $100 with no guarantees you get what you get. Complaining about what is or isn't in the mystery box is like complaining about getting dealt a garbage hand in poker.

Aaaaaaaand this is exactly why I never buy mystery boxes.

I think the reason that so many people are not very happy is because the original listing for this mystery box on Discraft's website was somewhat misleading. They made it sound like all of these mystery boxes would have way more than $99 retail value. This wasn't promoted as a "normal" mystery box. But yes it's pretty clear that it's buyer beware anytime you see the words mystery box, no matter how it's promoted by the vendor.

I didn't get anything I was interested in. My items will all be going into a raffle for my Ace Race anyways. Retail value - $124.97. I could have purchased them for $60.45 + shipping. I gambled and lost, oh well :)

Pick it up, shake it around, listen for a basket and chains. Then return to sender unopened.

I just want to state I did not buy a mystery box and I am not a "sour grape"

I hope this Mystery Box event has at the least deterred many from trusting this "business practice". If any DGCR member got a decent mystery box with a basket in it, please please please post. So far the odds are looking abysmal
