If these guys can still perform at a high level in the NFL past the age of 40, how does that translate with longevity in disc golf at the MPO level, where most players get put out to the masters pasture ?

A ton of Quarterbacking comes down to decision making, which Brees and Brady are really good at, even if they don't have the physicality younger players do. There's less of that in Disc Golf, especially with the courses that usually show up on high-level events (courses like Idlewild being an exception). The only example in Disc Golf I can think of with an older player winning is when Cam Todd won the GBO a few years back.

I'm not sure Brees & Brady fit in any sentence with the term "most players". Most NFL players are put out to pasture by age 40, too.

We may yet come across the exceptional disc golfer who can stay at the top of the game into his 40s.

Ha, good point,I should have at least thrown in a semi-colon for two different sports. When was the last time you saw a disc golfer sacked by a 280 pound lineman ?

I'm hoping that as the sport grows, we will have a Pro Masters tour, with courses that reward brains and finesse over brawn.

Disc golf is closer to PGA Tour golf. I would say you can be competitive into your mid forties. Barry Shultz and JohnE McCray have both been really successful into their forties.

JohnE lifetime peak rating occurred when he was 42 at 1039. He was his best after 40.

Barry was rated as high as 1034 at age 46 while at age 34 he had his peak rating of 1039.

Disc Golf isn't football where you absolutely need peak athletic form to play well. If you throw 450 instead of 500 that's still enough for most courses. Then you have experience to rely on as well.

JohnE, Patrick Brown and Philo are still doing well into their 40s. Even if their power isn't what it once was they can still execute at a very high level.

Agreed.

From what I can tell, disc golf at the very top sort of skipped a generation and you'll see more top 40 year olds a few years down the road.

That might take a couple of days to digest, but I think you may be on to something...

so 2 people out of how many

Climo did play 5 Masters events at age 45 and 9 Open events that season. At age 44 he played only 2 Masters events and 12 Open.

Shultz and Climo were on top of the game into their late 30's. The next batch of greats were probably Doss, McBeth, and Wysocki and they all won their first Worlds from age 20-22.

So basically 40 year olds passed to the torch to a bunch of 20 year olds about 10 or so years ago.

A lot of it comes down to health care resources available. Brees, Brady, anyone making multiple million$/yr is going to have a team keeping him healthy. Ain't no one gong to pay for _my_ tommy john surgery.

And Climo.

I would say the top players lost very little into their mid 40's.

Patrick Brown actually peaked at 1021 at age 46. He was still 1017 last year at age 52.

Philo just hit his highest rating now at 1030 and is 40 years old.
