I need a Ruling

im comfortable being the eh-hole and calling him on it. no stroke or anything, but a warning is warranted. that **** dont fly.

Exactly.

I'm surprised at all these players on here that don't follow basic rules during tournament play. Then go on to call someone an a-hole or nazi when someone enforced a rule. What a joke.

I'm not really sure how making sweeping generalizations like that helps this thread. I play tournaments and I didn't do any of those things. I simply stated my opinion in a non-confrontational manner. Your post is equally as immature as the others'.

Exactly Cgkdisc. All I did was say something.

Calling me an a55hole and a retard...childish.

I can't believe I'm being dogged for enforcing the rules in a sanctioned event. Again, calling him out was all very casual. Not a big deal at all. He knew the rules well and was actually the one who made the warning official by seconding it but whatever.

I didn't come out and say "HEY! THAT'S A WARNING FOR NOT MARKING YOUR LIE!" Nothing could be further from the truth.

Who care's. The discussion about the rules never materialized here so I'm just going to drop it.

It's not what you said, it's how you said it. Specifically...

I think this should have been a 2 stroke penalty because he advanced his disc without marking it. The group, including Anonymous Player A's know-it-all girlfriend (who was walking with our group and decided to appoint herself a rules official), decided that is should be a warning, that it fell under the rules about marking a lie.

...this paragraph was antagonistic and actually detracted from the point you're trying to make. To add to the issue, the girlfriend was actually correct in this instance. While I agree the opposing view was equally antagonistic and unnecessary towards you, I have to say man...if you can dish it out you better be ready to take it.

Chalk this one up to poor choice of wording and move on.

Don't let something like this discourage you from playing in tournaments. I've played in my fair share of tourneys and have seen very few incidents. It's no different than going to the grocery, driving or working; every now and then you run into a dbag. At least during a tournament there will be other people on the card you can laugh with about the dbag.

Well the fact that you were wrong was the problem for me.

It would be equivalent to crossing the free throw line on a foul shotin basketball. Casual situations you aren't going to care but in Games (Tournaments) rules are rules.

lol, sorry that's not even close to analagous. First off, you don't shoot free throws in pickup games (aka casual). Secondly, if you did, you'd call the foot fault every time.

If you're going to make a basketball analogy, a much closer one would be inbounding the ball. During a league game you make sure you go out of bounds and pass it back in - in pickup ball just bring it upcourt.

It's like when a guy hits your car but instead of exchanging info, he speeds off and later you learn he was on meth.

Guys, this is getting dangerously close to heading to the landfill.

Please be civil to one another. If you disagree, say so, and why. If you have other issues, take it to a PM or just move along. Name calling is really not necessary.

While the OPs wording may have been a bit antagonistic, I think the question was legit.

Following the rules in tournament play DOES matter, and calling him on it (verbal warning) was appropriate under failure to mark a lie.

JMHO, of course.

I wasnt really trying to call anyone a retard, just wanted to say marking a lie within arm lenght is retarded. Yeah I would do what others on here said and place another disc in from behind the one on the ground. Like others said the major cause for warning or penalty would be for the player getting mad.

But the OP got it wrong and tried to stroke the guy, not warn him.

begs the question: does "hey man. do me a solid and mark your lie next time." qualify as a warning?

And now for a lame Q&A with myself...

Have you seen this sort of thing occur in tournament play? Several times.

Have you called anybody on it? Nope.

Should you have? Probably.

Do you always mark your lie or use the thrown disc as a lie? Of course.

Why so? Because thats the rules.

So why not call others who don't mark their lie? Because I don't wanna be "that guy".

And for a great deal of disc golfers, or a great deal of people in most any recreational sport, that's probably how they would answer.

Well, most of them.

I know it sucks to have to call other players on rules infractions, but if nobody is willing to stand up and enforce the rules, it's not fair to other cards who are carefully following all the rules. I'm careful to mark my lie or leave the disc there and toss another disc in even when it's within range to just drop it in with no chance to miss. I also let people know that's the rule if they don't follow it, though if it's a one time thing I just point it out to them casually rather than necessarily giving an official warning (though if they continue and it's a pattern I'll warn them and stroke them if necessary). You don't have to be a jerk about it, but enforcing the rules of the game is something we should all work to do in events, it just makes it a more fair contest for everyone.
