The combination of throwing and walking equals about 920 calories burned during a two-hour round of disc golf. Next time you throw a disc into the woods, look on the bright side -- you're burning more calories than the pros.

it's funny to think, but i use DG as part of my overall workout routine...Every day i (either) work out at gym with weights, run, or play dg for an extended period.

i never realized that (theoretically) 4 hours of DG would burn off a pound of weight.

I like to walk 2-3 miles a day, and I played yesterday before I went to work. Got to mention that I met GooddriveBadputt and his wife, and I also met kpc2004. Played 21 holes, and I felt like I had a pretty good work out after playing that course we played. I felt like I had done my 2-3 mile walk and then some.

Same here, my course is long too. Takes about 1:45 minutes to finish if we dont stop and look for discs and is at 5800 ft above sea level. Plays up a hogback, across a mesa, down the side of the mesa. Way up in the mountains, just gorgeous course. Then through some pretty rugged terrain. As long as i eat properly i can see the weight vanish.

I really don't think I burn THAT many calories playing dg heh. Depends on how rugged the course is as well.

some quick facts:
in 4 hours it would be a pound of fat, you can loose 4 pounds of water weight in a round in the summer.

Playing in the winter burns more calories

playing 4 hours at a flat florida course (about 2-3 rounds of 18) is only going to burn 65% of the calories as playing hawk hallow or iron hill. (1-1.5 rounds)

good to know .... and the more you know ..... GI JOE!!!

I guess it all depends on where you play, what your metabolism is, how much you carry, how well you throw, what your form is, how hot it is, how cold it is, how much gear and discs you carry, and possibly what you eat and drink before, during and after you play. Oh yeah, and if you are male or female, menstruating, pregnant or maybe not so much. So in summary, the article,is total BS. Or as the saying goes, there are liars, damn liars, and statistics.

Happy New Year!!

I am gaining a LOT of calories and LBS right now.

The course they're talking about in the article isn't that hilly, I don't think. I've played there twice and enjoyed it a lot -- not real long, but not very open either. There's a decent amount of elevation in the course, and a couple of the holes are farther apart than most places. The nice thing about DG as a workout is that you don't really notice that you're exercising. It's the same way when I walk 18 playing ball golf.

Please refer to it as golf (ball) that is my mission for 2011, for people to refer to disc golf as disc golf and golf as golf and it is acceptable to say golf (ball) but preferably just golf. Its only a few hundred years of history we are talking about here!!!!

I am a golfer and a disc golfer and when I play with my golf buddies I refer to it as disc golf, but when I play with my disc golfing friends I refer to "the other" sport as golf because that is what it is. It isn't like Augusta refers to itself as Augusta National (Ball) Golf Club or The Royal and Anceint (Ball) Golf Club at St. Andrews refer to themselves including the (ball) reference.

Golf simply has existed longer and it deserves the acknowledgement that I have given it by referring to the ball after the name golf. The BALL refers to the type of golf, (or in this sites instance DISC), but golf has been around for centuries, disc golf a couple freaking decades. I love both but golf came way before disc golf, so it deserves to just be called golf. If you were talking to a bunch of non disc golfers you would say you were going disc golfing right, but if you were to say to them you were golfing they would think, ahh he is a golfer, one who walks around with a club and hits balls. It simply is inferred. Golf simply takes precedence over disc golf because it is only like 500 years older

I think I will repost my logic here at least 10-20 times in 2011, trying to get people to stop referring to golf as ball golf, please simply refer to it as golf (ball) . . . disc golf is disc golf and that is all I have to say about that.

I hope I don't get any infractions for this!!!!

Don't confuse recreation with exercise. It may be good for you, but not sure you're really getting a workout. Exercise should have some measurable goals and some measurable benefits. But maybe I am being too literal.

Exercise that you get recreationally is the best kind, IMO. For the last few years, I became a runner, running almost every other day, and I hated every minute of it. I only did it to stay in shape for b-ball season (winter). I'd much rather get my exercise playing ball, or soccer. Now that I've (apparently) quit playing b-ball, I'm having to hit the treadmill this time of year, since discing here is pretty minimal.

I do know if i wear my heart rate monitor on a short hilly course we have it says
a two person rd moving burns almost 800 cals, but the same course with three people falls to 400 cals and hour and only three hundred for three people

You burn a crap load playing, but dont forget about the coffee with sugar and cream on the way to the course, the 6 pack during the course and then the entire dollar menu after you play.

If you want to lose weight you have to burn more calories then you consume.

A lot of it depends on the speed you play too. When I play with groups of people or newer players so there's lots of waiting and standing around, I can play all day without feeling like I've done anything. When Ashleigh and I are on a road trip though, we move. We'll get through 5-8 courses in a day moving at a pretty fast pace, even with hilly tough courses, and we both lose weight on road trips because of that.
