I guess I could use my own experience to answer. The first year I played in the Ice Bowl I cashed. The last 2 times I got paired up with partiers. In fact the one year my partner could barely walk and fell a few times. While I didn't join the drinking, I said to myself, oh well, c'est la vie. So I gave up any notion of cashing. Instead I just went with the flow played the best I could and said there's always next year.

Every time I have that frisbee in my hand my number one goal is to have fun. So I did and I do.

Always carry two things: a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite and as a further precaution- a small snake. (misquote) -W.C.
I once joined a group of younger locals this summer that I knew where going to be interesting by the fact that their bag(they carried but a one between the four of them) well, their bag was more portable bar(there used to be such things) than disc bag. Theirs' contained a big bottle of whiskey,2liters of cola, plastic cups, and some high speed drivers stuck in the ice like a mass ufo crash at the North pole, no one brought(owned?) a putter.
As far as how the round went it was enjoyable. I won't drink whiskey on account of it's disgusting, but the group by and large was very entertaining. I WAS used as kind of a seeing eye disc dog for the heavily inebriated, and a leaning post/walking cane for the more treacherous holes(the ones with gravity) One of the young men was having a terrible round, disc golf wise, and then he hit an ace on #3. His first. Had like six people sign his disc. It was endearing, but after that I had to get out of there as there was a tidal wave of whiskey bearing down.

Getting sloppy drunk while playing a round where something is on the line is something else.

It's a random draw tournament. How you finish is pretty much down to luck on the draw, unless you are the strongest player in the field and would win playing alone.

So people who are coming there and expecting to compete seriously for something "on the line" are in the wrong place IMO. They can play serious events and try to win cash :)

But random draw tournaments are IMO more about the socialising, having fun, and partying. Again, if you dont like that, I think you are in the wrong place.

So while the young drunk was insensible ( which was his rigth though, he came there to party while chucking a few discs every now and then ), I dont see anybody having the rigth to call him on it. All you can do is go with the flow. As long as it is not a PDGA tournament where drinking is forbidden, there is not much you can do.

No it isn't his "right". Being drunk in public and in most cases having open containers in public parks is quite literally not within your rights. I realize that your opinion that dubz is for socializing and partying is shared by a number of disc golfers which is why i don't play dubz anymore. As far as the OP goes, had i been put in the same situation as the older timer mentioned i would have left my partner too.

I haven't gotten around to looking at any leagues in my area yet as I'm trying to improve my game first, but I'd never go back to one with an experience like that tbh. If someone wants to get so impaired they can barely play then put them in a separate pool for draws so they don't drag people who came to play down imo. Whether it's more focused on socializing or not, you're a complete tool if you don't respect your partner (if they wanna party too then by all means go ahead). Old guy is completely justified to be frustrated with the situation imo.

I don't mind if someone has a beer or two, but to the point of being trashed or using illegal substances on top of that? I'll be gone before they stumble to their disc 50 ft away. I'm sure most people would much prefer a newer player, like myself, that they can give pointers to over some nimrod who can hardly stand up. You don't have to be drunk to have fun.

If it is acceptable for a player to CHOOSE to get inebriated while playing competitive disc golf (that has a payout), it is also acceptable for a player to CHOOSE to leave at anytime during the round if they do not enjoy sharing the other players inebriation. It sucks that both players had to buy into the event to find this out.

If you are playing league doubles to supplement your income, or are using the tourney as a chance to work out your frustration over your failure to make a mark in some other professional sport, good chance you are irritating me. Sloppy drunk is rude, but people are rude. If legal and not against league rules, it is his right. This old guy is the reason I do not play many leagues or tournaments. I am not into sloppy drunk while playing, mostly cause I have to drive home, but who am I to impede upon some other dude, trying to have his definition of fun. If you are so good and your partner stinks or is smashed, play better.

sounds like young guy just needs a lesson in common courtesy. Im not much on drinking while playing but do like to indulge in other party favors but before hand i discuss with the guys on my card if it would bother or offend anyone.. if so then enough said.. if not so be it .. but even then its not on the same level as someone getting smashed drunk out there... have fun but be courteous since everyone defintion of "fun" isnt the same

If my hard earned cash is on the line you better believe I would be ticked if my partner got tanked or stoned.

You know you guys are really beginning to scare me. I thought this would be a good family activity for me to participate in with my wife and 14 year old daughter but if public intoxication, drug use and fist fights (posted about in another thread) are the norm I'm beginning to have reservations. This is not the kind of crap I want my family around.

I used to think disc golfers were laid back, friendly, easy going folks just out to enjoy nature, some exercise and a good time. Now I'm actually having serious reservations about getting involved in this sport at all.

I may just stick to shooting guns. Gun owners seem to be a lot more responsible.

I think it's because it has become MORE popular. Therefore allowing MORE people to be out and playing...also meaning that more chance for crappy people. In my experience DGers have been awesome, I'd say 1-2% are the ones to avoid. :hfive:

Completely agree with this. When I play dubs or trips, I generally prefer to have a more fun group and not get with one of the 5s, just because it's generally going to be less fun. If the old guy is clearly better, they're going to take most of his shots anyway, so why does it matter the condition of his partner?

Also, how much are you guys playing dubs for? Where I'm from, it's like $3-5, so it's not like he's out a ton of cash. Finish the entire round (playoff included) and don't come back the next time, because that's the risk you take during a random draw.

Situation arose at random dubs last night.

Longtime area golfer gets paired with a partier, who quickly gets hammered* along with the other team on the card. He's pissed the entire round, and even though he's tied for last cash, leaves his partner, who is forced to play off without him.

*Hammered - The other card were both 950+ rated local pros. Tied for first. Both missed a 20' putt on the first hole of the playoff. Badly.

The question:

Is the old guy overreacting, or should the young buck have cut back some since they were playing for money?

Caveat:

Had they finished 2 strokes better, they would have taken 1st place outright.

Ob? We're you at parm?

I like to drink but rarely when I play. When I see my opponent smoking or drinking I smile because it generally means they are there to have fun and usually don't play as well as they are capable. I love it when other players in my division take a liquid lunch during a tourney.

this is spot on. the more people that play, the higher the number of douchebags that pick up the sport. Probably about the same percentage on the whole, but more total d-bags. which sucks but can not be avoided with the expansion of the sport, which pretty much everyone is in favor of

Disrespect begets Disrespect

Why should he finish the round? Is it required? Its his right to not play anymore at anytime. It's also the other persons right to get drunk. Our choices affect others.

I would have just finished out the round, and either never came back, or quietly let whoever was in charge know I would like a different partner next time.

Dont play in random dubs events if you're expecting to not get paired with a drunk, partier, or noob.
If you get paired with another serious pro, consider it lucky. That way you dont get let down.

In this example, finish the round and dont play random partner dubs again.

. Next thing I know some kids pass by offering to sell shrooms. They all jump on the opportunity and get that too.

My partner and I are chasing one stroke with 3 holes left to go, and everyone is literally getting drunk and high for 15 minutes. I don't do either, and honestly don't care when others do it, but this just made no sense to me. Why not just hold off for 3 holes? I really wanted to chase that stroke down and win the thing. Anyway, we continue with birdies on 16 and 17. Hole 18 my drive goes OB and my partner just misses the fairway and goes into tall grass. We search for over 20 minutes for his disc as he gets belligerent and angry while the other guys are staring at the sky and laughing because the shrooms are starting to kick in. Eventually my partner gives up and doesn't even want to finish out the hole. I wasted my time and money. I haven't been back to that league since.
One of the best random dubs rounds Ive seen at my local course was played by a friend and his partner on shrooms during a glow round. -14.

I'm gonna have a 'good' round no matter what!

If you have a bad round going being hammered makes it much easier to deal with! Not talking from personal experience mind you... :p
Leaving your partner before the game is over (playoffs are part of the game) is always in bad form!
You cant pick your partner in random draw doubles. I guess you could hope that you dont get that same drunk partner next time. But realize it could happen again so...
Some people play better drunk/stoned/etc. It sounds like the case here as the drunk guy was good enough to help get this team into a playoff for cash. Why leave at that point? Your not proving a point. You just look like the guy who skipped out on his partner!
When signing up to play random-draw doubles you should expect to get all kinds of different partners. Their skill & inebriation levels will vary widely (& wildly!).
Now you know!
