It may be gross, but avoiding deodorant and aftershave, etc helps.

Doesn't help me. I usually only use/need deodorant when I haven't showered that day, and I've literally never used aftershave in my entire life. I don't really have a use for shaving cream either. If you need more than a little soap to shave, you're either a lily-skinned wimp or you need to sharpen your razor.
