Where to start?

Probably not the best surface to practice on. I'd minimize the weight shift to a standstill to get a better feel for it, before doing a xstep and adding more motion. You should finish like a golfer with the rear toes on the ground, heel straight up, stacked/balanced/weight on front front .

In the "crush the can" drill,
When I land on the can on my heal, that should trigger the hips? Correct?
After you crush the can with your heel/weight shifts/front hip clears,............ then swing.
