Big Trees (Wawona) lies on Highway 41, midway between the park's south gate and Yosemite Valley. Public transportation bus service is available to and from the Big Trees Lodge area via Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System.
The Wawona Area was renamed Big Trees Area due to a legal dispute between the US Government, which owns the property, and the outgoing concessionaire, Delaware North, which claims rights to the trademarked name. All very confusing and very complicated, a lot of maps and websites are now wrong even the NPS website uses the names interchangeably. Google Maps (as of June 10, 2019) still uses the Wawona name but area signs are already being converted to Big Trees with most already done.
