Little Brother

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 2, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- good elevation change with incorporation of rolling hills
- pond incorporated for water hazard on 2 holes
- good out and back design hugs hillsides for some wooded shots
- practice basket shared with Big Brother
- great amenities: bathrooms onsite, port o potties on course, snacks for purchase, garbage cans
- variety of hole lengths
- variety of shot types with mix of open and wooded holes
- new baskets coming soon
- older but large concrete tees
- well maintained and picturesque course
- rough is very manageable
- last few holes add significant technical challenge with steep dropoffs
- good layout and great navigation/flow
- camping onsite

Cons:

- baskets are about 25 years old and are showing their age
- wind is a significant factor, particularly on first few holes
- tee signs are just ok with small maps
- can feel a little repetitive

Other Thoughts:

Justin Trails Classic is a respectable course, though not in the same league as Big Brother. The owners said they have ordered new baskets, so their 25+ year old baskets will likely be upgraded very soon which will be a nice facelift for this course. The tee signs, like Big Brother, are a little underwhelming for a location of this caliber, but they are serviceable, and the concrete tees are large and functional, though a bit weathered.

Classic has respectable elevation change that would probably impress on most courses, it just happens to pale in comparison to its Big Brother. You don't tend to traverse the epic up and down hills, but there are plenty of uphill or downhill shots. The first several holes are very open and prone to the wind having its way before moving into some more sheltered trees. At the farthest point there are a few shots around a pond where Classic and Big Brother come within spitting distance of each other. After that, you head back towards the start. The last few holes were some of my favorites, playing up higher on the hill with large dropoffs to your right.

Hole 17 was a cool throw over a little uphill rise, then down over a small ravine. I always find these "downhill but with an uphill obstacle in the way first" shots challenging to choose a strategy on. Hole 18 may have been even better, with another slight rise followed by a downhill shot onto the hillside. This one was absolutely brutal to park with rolls off the basket area down the hill being hard to avoid. The built in stairs on hole 18 were nice and something I'd like to see a bit more of on these courses where there are really steep grades.

Overall, the mix of hole types here is still respectable and in some ways this course plays closer to a 4. However, it isn't the same caliber and level of unique play as Big Brother. If you can't handle long walking distances, Classic is the course to play at about 1.5 miles of walking vs. 3.5 miles for Big Brother. Ideally, anyone making the trip all the way out to Sparta should play both. While Big Brother took me about 2 hours, Classic was more in the 1:15 range (both solo). Classic will not wear you out nearly to the level Big Brother will.

One thing that impressed me here was that Classic and Big Brother get close to each other at a few points, but don't interfere with each other. You can almost see the whole layout of Classic playing out in front of you as its a very linear out and back traversal; it's very logical and was well thought out to avoid the property's lower lying farmland but still work cool holes into the trees and hillside.

The owners of the property are delightful and seem to really care about these courses and their maintenance. There are snacks for sale as well as some discs and shirts. Justin Trails is well worth a visit; maybe not for Classic alone, but with 2 excellent courses here, it's a great place to spend part of a day.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice course. Nice tees and pads. Interesting layouts. Shot variety.

Elevation and tunnels. Open bombers and short shots.

Very well maintained.

Cons:

Kinda boring. Especially after big brother.

It's a nice course but nothing really special.

I love a good Meat Loaf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 1, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fun warm up course for Big Brother - or plenty of fun on its own with a decent mix of wooded and open shots, mix of elevation, and some fun water shots.

Unique Amenities that you might not find at other courses -
Camping or lodging on site.
Breakfast available in the morning.
Barn for hosting events or getting out of the rain.

Cons:

Not a lot of variety of shot shapes, you're either looking at open with elevation, right to left, or tunnel shots.

Not a lot of variety in distance.

A little rough around the edges - some places it can be a pain to venture off the fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Maybe not a destination course on its own, but pair it with big brother, and you have 36 holes worth traveling for, make a weekend of it, go for an event, make sure you stop by and play both courses if you ever have the opportunity.

Great Private WI Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 30, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is very picturesque and private. There are a ton of great views from the hilltops and the grounds are very well kept. This is a great get away destination if you have a weekend to throw. The owners are very nice, accommodating and offer lodging and camping on site. The classic course is geared more for an intermediate/rec level player but has something for everyone. The rolling hills that the course plays on and around offer a wide variety of elevation challenges including uphill monsters, downhill bombers, cross hill roll a ways and everything in-between. There are also some tight wooded shots sprinkled in to force more accurate shot shaping.

-Great use of elevation that comes into play on all but 3 of the 18 holes. This is the best part of this course for sure.
-Nice concrete tee pads with two (most of the shorts tees are just 4x4 kickers) positions on every hole.
-Adequate signage with hole number, distance and layout.
-Some risky roll away pin positions that will make you think about laying up.
-This course is a great workout (bring water).
-The wooded holes are mostly straight but very tight and require a controlled drive.
-The course has great flow and you are never backtracking or walking long distances in between holes.
-Water comes into play on two holes but is not overly threatening.
-The course is not overly challenging but is defiantly not a pitch and putt. It is the definition of a rec course.
-Has some very unique holes at the end of the course (17 & 18) are very cool and memorable. I don't think I have ever played a hole quite like 18.
-The fairways are very well maintained and players will be punished for going in the rough on most of the holes.
-They offer a few disc to buy in the clubhouse.
-The owners are awesome.

Cons:

As with all course there are some things that could be improved upon.

-Some of the holes get a bit repetitive, there are lots of wide open shots and only really bad drives will be punished.
-The rough is ROUGH on many of the holes. Lots of thorns and bramble on the wooded hole and the open holes have tall grass that will not punish you score wise but will make finding your disc a challenge. Wear jeans if the temp allows.
-All of the holes are fairly straight and you can throw any number of shots to get to the pin. I can't think of any holes that require a big hyzer or anhyzer.
-Bugs can be an issue in the summer. You will encounter all kinds of them. Nothing the owners can really do about this one so bring bug spray.
-Hole #9 plays right next to the camping area so be careful of people by their camp sites.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a great time and a good warm up for the Big Brother course. If you only have a chance to play one course while at Justin Trails I would go for the Big Brother over the classic because it offers quite a bit more challenge. The $5 pay to play is well worth it because you can play two great courses for the price of one. The area around the course offers lots of other activities such as fishing, camping, hiking, parks and lots more. Warrens Wisconsin is about a half hour away and has a great indoor and outdoor water park for a great price. The scenery is beautiful in this part of Wisconsin and playing here in the fall would be absolutely amazing. I will play this course anytime I get the chance and wish I lived closer so I could get out there more often.
