I drove how far for this?

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good tee signs
Good cement tee pads, at least the ones that don't use the sidewalks or are overgrown.
Attempts to make a boring course better, I guess

Cons:

Mostly a boring park with not much to work with.
Not upkept very well year round. Some of the holes were overgrown and almost unplayable.
Course is showing it's age already, mostly because of neglect.

Other Thoughts:

Sometimes just because you have room for 18 holes does not mean you should attempt to make an 18 hole course.

The course starts out promising for the first couple of holes. Although you are throwing across or along the walking path for almost every hole on the front 10 holes. Shoot, you even throw from the walking path on a couple of these holes.

If there is a tree, you are throwing near it. The course does throw into or out of the rough between the sidewalk and creek a few times.

After you throw hole 10 that might be the most dangerous hole on the course, you have a long walk to hole 11, that is one of a few wide open shots.

12 actually has a triple mando that has seen better says.

Hole 13 has a random telephone poll that if you look at the tee sign, is actually suppose to be a mando to the left forcing a huge turnover shot.

14 is actually an overgrown wooded hole. It's a blind shot and hard to figure out even after walking the hole.

15 is uphill wide open boring hole.

The last few holes are actually interesting and decent holes.

Hole 16 is a big turnover shot to the right with the basket up on a pile of rocks.

hole 17's tee pad was way overgrown, but it's a decent very tight blind shot up to the basket in a grove of tree's.

18 is a longer shot over a hill and over a dry creek bed to the basket near the parking lot. It's actually a decent hole and a tough par 3 for me.

Overall this course is not very good, specially for an 18 hole course. I found it rather boring with lots of boring shots.

Actually, just play holes 1 to 5, then throw 15 to 18 and you have a decent 9 hole course. The good holes make up for the open uphill hole 15.

either way, it was course #1688 for me.

Would I play here again? Nope, I was warned that the course can be overgrown in the summer pretty bad and hard to play. It was decent but I could tell in the summer it might be almost impossible.

One Shot Wonder 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 29, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Even though it has some major issues, this may be my favorite 2.0 course I've played so far.

-Amenities: Pretty blue DISCatchers and concrete tees.

-Beauty: I'm sure that playing in the light rain made all the grass look greener, but I thought the mix of open fields and woods made Lewisburg a very enjoyable environment. The river visible in the (6)-(10) range is especially picturesque.

-Pocket Greens: The one shot mentioned in the title. Lewisburg has more pocket greens than any other course I've ever played. I love it. Many holes out here give you the chance to throw with power from the open, but require a low line to come close to the basket. It also makes putting very scenic.

-Navigation: Actually pretty easy until the last couple. With a bit of signage would be entirely elementary. The flow is logical and followable.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Lots of medium-length par-3s with pocket greens or other minimal challenge. Players that drive a max of 375' may have a ton of fun ripping for easy-ish birdies out here. There are a couple of par-4s mixed in. The last couple of holes are the best on the course, as they use more trees to force a creative rip on (17) and a tough, blind decision placement shot on (18). Overall, a mostly open layout with some interest peppered in throughout.

Cons:

A combination of design and dedication issues.

-Openness/Monotony: A lot of basically open shots between 300'-400'. Even the pocket greens can't make it too interesting.

-Signage: Still absent, and badly needed. This definitely affects the rating.

-Overgrowth: The other biggest ratings affector that could change easily. The woodsy parts of this course need way more attention. Basically, anywhere that requires weedeating instead of a lawnmower is much too long, making it uncomfortable and a perfect home for snakes (which I did step on during my round). Also, holes (16) and (17) are getting towards unplayability, though right now they are merely uncomfortable (knee-high grass and sharp thorns).

-Whacky Holes: (14) and (16) come to mind as holes that were poorly designed. (14) has absurdly many trees in the first 150' and then is a blind right turn. (16) is a basic right-fading shot, but the green is totally covered by branches and there is no reasonable place around the basket to stand due to rocks and sharp plants.

-Safety: The walking path is directly in the fairway several times. Requires care.

Other Thoughts:

Lewisburg should be a Decent and possibly even a Good (maybe with design tweaks) course. It's currently a bit raw, though. Signage is badly needed, and much better upkeep. If you like 300-400' open shots with guarded greens, you'll absolutely bop at this course. For most, it is really more like Reasonable for now. Please PM me if the upkeep or signage changes, and I'll bump it to a 2.5.

Better than not playing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Long Open Holes - If you like crushing 350' drives and hate trees these is right up your alley.

Plenty of Parking

Most holes had pads - I think in two spots you used the walkway to T off of. It looked like there was an alt T for 17 about to be poured, I think that will help...

Cons:

Long Open Holes - more than a couple holes of 300'+ to a basket in the middle of a field, kind of boring.

Hidden baskets - Without the signs up yet there were a few holes where I had to go hunting for a basket.

The walking path - I played around lunch on a week day and there was a fair amount of foot traffic on the path. With a few holes throwing across it and hole two throwing parallel to it you need to pay attention to the walkers.

nice place to play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A fun/challenging course for the intermediate/advanced player. Plenty of holes to air out drives, not many short holes. Nice scenery on the front 9 along the creek. I'm local and most days I am the only one there, never seen more than 3 groups on the whole course. Quiet back 9 (away from walkway). Course is being maintained pretty well.

Cons:

This is a tough course for a beginner, even intermediate. A lot of foot traffic using the walkway, so be careful on several front 9 shots that someone isn't coming toward you. Off the fairway, weeds can get tall in summer, but it is bush hogged every couple of months. (Watch your disc!) Not much shade in summer, carry plenty of water! Great course for fall, winter, and spring. Holds water on a few holes on the back after a big rain, better off finding a path through the rough on holes 11 and 12. Holes 14, 16 & 17 are still a bit rough as in a lot of weeds/trees and not hard to lose a disc. 18 i recommend playing down the walkway to the right rather than the "fairway" which stays a bit grown up.

Other Thoughts:

This course is only months old, still needs signage put in, but it has come a long way and will continue to improve with the great volunteer work going on. Worth a trip if you live near Lewisburg. Bring a couple DX discs you don't mind losing, this course can eat them if you get too far off course/don't pay attention.

Air It Out Some 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lewisburg Disc Golf Course is a new 18 hole park style course that sits about 11 miles off of I-65 halfway between the Alabama border and Nashville . There is plenty of parking near a ball park fence . Port O lets are on the grounds , next to #1's fairway and near #15 .
The Equipment : This course was opened this year ( 2020 ) , and no tee signs are in yet I am hoping that this is being worked on, because there is no online map and no kiosk . The cement tee pads are large and flush with the ground .They are still pouring a couple of the last ones ( 17 ) The baskets are cool dark blue Dynamic Veterans . There are a couple of mando signs , one being at #8 , #11 ( ? ) and a double mando wooden structure that is like a large open garage door that you have to throw through to get to the green .
The Landscape : The course plays out and back on what looks like a huge field 1-10 go out and away from the parking lot , then 11-18 come all the way back and end next to it . . Most of this is very flat . The only bits of elevation are throwing off a mound on #2 , thrwoing to a basket on a hill on 14 , throwing up a slight hill of 15 and a basket placement on 16 . The grass her is cut , the branches seemed cut . There are some issues where the basket was placed being overgrown a bit on #14 and some of the general area needs clearing on 17 , but it's a new course . There is a cement walking path that the locals utilize that runs through the front 9 of the course . There is a creek that comes into play on hole 6, right behind the basket . There are a few instances where you throw from the open into a grove of trees or brush .
The highlights : 1 & 2 are slow starter holes . In fact , most of the drives here are open shots to baskets with trees or brush lines protecting them .One of the exceptions is #3 where you have to drive out of a jail of smaller trees . #4's basket is in a grove of trees . #5 has a tree at the tee and has you shooting to a basket behind a group of trees . #12 is the garage door mando shot .. It is deceptively harder than it looks . It is an open air shot that might move your drive around some . #14's pad is tucked into the woods . Unless you have a monster arm and can clear the high trees , you are going to have to chance a midrange drive through small trees without a real fairway . Pinball , Anyone ? #16 tee is far to the left of the course and throws to a great basket placement on a mound with a dropoff behind it . Good risk/reward hole . #17 is a short throw around some small trees with a basket protected by a grove . #18 is a slight downhill window shot that will be too long for most to negotiate . There is a lot of heavy rough 2/3 of the way to the basket with is an open green near the lot . Pretty good finishing hole .
Signature Hole : #6 . Drive from the open to a very slight left into some green , with the basket sitting on a small hill and a creek several feet behind it . Big risk/reward here . The creek will claim your disc .
Time : It took me over an hour to play here , but I don't know how much time I spent looking around for tee pads . A foursome that knows where they are going will finish in just over 2 hours .
For only being scant months old , this course seems to be coming along okay . It must still be a secret , because I never saw another player here the whole time .

Cons:

#1 Safety . A walking path runs from the parking lot here all the way through hole 10 . This will come into play during peak times . There is also a place at #8 that requires you to throw through the walking path . If a walker or runner comes around a corner as you are letting go of a drive , you will hit them flush in the face . Look down the fairway to make sure nothing like this scenario causes the course to be uprooted . #2 fairway comes close to a fence line ( and path , Surprise ) .
#2 Navigation . I couldn't find tee pads to a couple of holes and there was No basket at #11 . Finding the tee pads for 14, 16 & 17 are a chore . I am hoping the tee signs go in , there is a kiosk that goes up , an online map goes viral , This course needs some Next Tee signs , too .
#3 The Elements . The course is flat and holds water in several spots . I had to walk over a waterlogged fairway and into 2" of water just to use the Port O Let at #1 There are plenty of water/mud spots all over the course ( #7 , 10 , 14 , 16 and 17 come to mind ) . Wear waterproof shoes if you play after or during a rain .
#4 Disc Risk : Higher than normal . Besides the creek behind hole 6, there is some unusually heavy rough on several holes . If your drive goes in , it may never come out . ( #2 #7 , #16 and #18 especially ) .
#5 no amenities . I will reserve this con for future reference and take it out if benches , a shelter, or a kiosk show up .

Other Thoughts:

For a course that shows some length and fun basket placements , my review score makes it look like I am putting it down , but it is far from the truth . The course should go up , maybe even by a point if the rough edges on the course are ironed out and signage comes in . I think that as long as you play off peak here and avoid the other park patrons , you might have a good time here . A chance to air out your drives on several holes , and some more technical throws a little later on . Wellsbranch is spot on . The last 3 holes are a really good finish to your round . It looks like they sunk some cash into this course with the large cement tee pads and the great baskets . i wonder what the signs will look like .

My Recommendation : A good enough course with a little length for the pro, Am or intermediate . Challenging enough for the local . A little too much for the 1 disc player , a newbie or a family to play here . Maybe too far off for the traveler , and not ideal for the Course Collector because of it being off the beaten path ( 20 minutes from I-65 ) and few course options to group it with ( Henry Horton ? ) . That being said , the reason I would tell you play a round or 2 now , is that you can see the progress in a year and know that you saw the course when it was barely in the ground . I like to revisit course for that reason alone . Some of you should give this course a look , both now and in 2021 .

Sidewalk Fairways 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.422 Rating) An openish moderate length course with a couple wooded holes.
- BASKET GUARDING - Easily my favorite aspect was the basket guarding. Several baskets are placed in constricted wooded pockets with ideal attack angles to score well. Seeing hole (16s) basket placement was sweet on the walk up to check the blind location. The basket is perched on a rock outcropping surrounded by trees on 3 sides.
- FINISH - The last 3 holes are the best string of 3 holes on the layout IMO. Interesting terrain, guarded baskets and intriguing gameplay. I like it when a course finishes strong.
- CHAINS - Beautiful new blue powder coated Veteran baskets.
- TEES - These are biggest concrete tees I've seen in Tennessee thus far. 5 feet by 13 feet with a widening on the back side. The front of the pad will need some built-up leveling.
- CHALLENGING - Upper Intermediate to lower Advanced level game play. Being able to throw 350 plus will be the biggest key to score low. In addition, smart game play and execution will be key on several holes too. Upper Advanced players who can chuck 400 feet will murder this course.
- LENGTH - Those that max out at around 375 feet or less will get to use their driver on at least half of the tees. With my weak arm pumping 325 foot max, I went with driver on all of them but a couple. Kind-of a par fest course to me.

Cons:

Too many walking paths in play and several other minor concerns or preferential things.
- YOUTH - I overlooked a few things for my rating of this course due to its age. The signage was not in yet, one basket was missing, one pad wasn't poured, and a couple fairways weren't mowed yet. I did not take off rating points for these things as I don't plan to come back. I would expect that these will all be corrected over the next 6 months.
- NAVIGATION - As stated above, no signage yet, so it could be tricky as a solo first time. Again, I did not take of points for this as I don't plan to come back and I suspect it will be addressed soon.
- SAFETY HAZARDS - Take a look at the pictures I posted for this course on the media tab. People are walking down the fairway in almost half of them. In fairness to the walkers, it's a concrete sidewalk, meaning the course design didn't try to avoid the paths. In fairness to the designers, it would have been near impossible to deliver 18 holes without having a path come into play on occasion. This stated, the degree of interaction is way too much IMO. The mando on (8) is ridiculous and it requires throwers to aim straight down the path. Holes (9) and (10) could have unsuspecting walkers appear in view and play while the disc is in the air.
- BLIND WATER HAZARD - I want to say hole (7) has a creek in play left of the basket. First-time players could lose a disc due to the unknown hazard. I liked the hole after playing it.
- MANDOS - Nothing kills imagination and freedom more that unnecessary mandos and OB. The triple mando on (12), is the worst. I heard it was inspired by the gimmick centric Winthrop Gold Course. A smart play on the hole is to lay-up 30 feet short of the mando and then run an 80 foot birdie attempt. Lame. Hole (13) is another distasteful mando gimmick. I would not be surprised if the concrete sidewalk becomes OB once the signage gets put in.
- HOLE 14 - "Finally a wooded hole" I thought to myself as I entered the thick woods for (14s) tee. Sadly the shot is ruined by an improbable line. The margin of error on a line that goes toward the basket is maybe one foot, 75 feet down fairway. For those that have the arm, the best play may be over the top of the 40 foot tall pines.
- PRAIRIE GRASS - It seems like fairways edges are not going to get cut. GMcAtee and I spent substantial time searching for discs off fairway.
- FLATNESS - Most of the holes change by 5 feet or less. Perhaps hole (1), (15) and (18) change by 10 feet or so.

Other Thoughts:

A good course to some but ho hum to others. All the unnecessary mandos, flatness, lack of hole length variation and prairie grass lead to round without much joy for me. I did appreciate the neat guarded pockets on a few holes. Overall, I think I would score this at a 3.0 level course if it weren't for the degree of safety concerns and distasteful gimmicks. I shaved off almost a ½ point for those fun killers. On a positive note, Lewisburg is a different animal compared to the closest course, Henry Horton. So it's good to know that locals will have the option to play two different styles and see for themselves which they like better. No doubt some will prefer this style over the technical woods play of Henry Horton. Me personally, I'd rather play in the woods at Horton again than at fields of Lewisburg.
- HOLE VARIETY - Average. I threw forehand and backhand off the tee on a near even split. I liked the creek element on a couple holes and sort-of wish it made an even bigger impact on a hole or two. At least one hole felt like a par 4, hole (9), or this was a big hooking 550 foot par 3. What brought the variety back to average was the somewhat openish nature of the course and it felt like that at least a dozen holes played between 300 and 400 feet.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Average
- TIME PLAY - Average.
