Easy Like Sunday Morning

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

We played this course on a Sunday morning and were pleasantly surprised at how good it was. It is recreational in nature with most holes in the 150-350 foot range. The course winds its way around a well-landscaped college campus that was very well maintained and features mostly open holes but also mixes in a few wooded holes and some obstacles both manmade and natural to negotiate around and even has a few minor elevation changes. Navigation is ok and with the map, you'll be fine. We had the whole course to ourselves and pretty much the whole campus. The main parking lot gate was closed so we parked in the lot off Campus RD which had no gate and said open parking on the weekends and afternoons when classes are not in session. Parking was not an issue while we were there as there was a giant parking lot with only a lonely dog walker and us. We started on hole 17 and went on from there. The course is interesting enough for rec-int players and students passing through. Also probably one of the better courses in the area for new throwers and casuals. There are plenty of harder courses in the area for more advanced players and those that crave more of a challenge, but they of course could still enjoy a round here.

Cons:

So what keeps the rating down?

The tees are natural and are wearing out. Sure, you could throw from the asphalt or concrete areas near some of the tees or make your own tee nearby but full-on concrete tees would definitely elevate this course. The tee "signs" are 4x4s with just the hole # on them. The baskets are of at least three different varieties with some catching better than others. There are a couple of pockets of dense rough here and there. I recommend bright-colored discs and good spotting techniques on those holes. Parts of the course border very busy roads.

Other Thoughts:

This is the closest course to my house, but the last local course for me to play after a recent move to the area. I didn't have high hopes going in, but the course was a pleasant surprise and a nice alternative to the harder courses in the area. This very well could be my new home course and my weekly thrower if not traveling to bag!

Updated on 11/17/23

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 16, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Updated on 11/17/23 for new layout:
Here's the overview of the changes.
Major update changed the layout and added concrete tees and nice signs as well as putting 18 on a raised platform. Downside is the navigation gets really tough, especially in the wooded portion of the course. Some examples of this include the teepad of 6 being closest to 3s basket, directly in front of 8s basket is 12s teepad, and 10 and 11 tee nearly next to each other resulting in having to backtrack down 11s fairway to play it. You also need to backtrack after 12 and 15. There are significant walks from 16 to 17 as well as 18 back to the parking near 1.
Recently, there's also been homeless camping in various areas and the occasional addict found wandering in the woods.
Ultimately, the updated teepads and signs are nice, but do not improve the overall course which remains a 1.5.

Updated Review
This weekend I decided to play one of the last courses within an hour drive that I had yet to try out so I headed to the campus of Miami Hamilton. This course was recently expanded from 9 to 18 and plays through the recreational area of the small college campus.
Pros:
-18 baskets on a reasonably maintained property
-Some variety in distance
-A few wooded shots
-Makes use of what little elevation the area has
-Plenty of parking
-Not heavily used
-Nice pads and signage
-The occasional bench
-18 is on a raised platform

Cons:

Cons:
-The wooded holes are often extremely short, while the open holes tend to all feel the same
-The area feels a little too "rough". Many holes smelled like sewage, the campus is drab and not overly well maintained, and there are often homeless tents or addicts throughout the course.
-Hole 1 and 2 have crossing fairways. Other areas have overlapping fairways or baskets/pads that are too close for safe play.
-A few holes have long walks, often backtracking to get to the next hole.
-The rough was fairly short, but showed signs of not always getting mowed, which would make a shot on hole 16 a nightmare as it's over tall grass the entire way.
-14 and 15 play along a busy road that an errant tee shot could reach and you're never far from the sound of traffic.
-During school hours you must park in the student lot and walk 100 yards to the first tee. Hole 18 then leaves you on the opposite side of campus with a long trek back.
-A few holes play near walking paths, ball fields, and tennis courts. I played on a Sunday so I didn't see any of this in use but I imagine it could come into play.
-Being right by the busy road, litter seemed to be an issue

Other Thoughts:

It's not that this course is exceptionally bad, it's just not really interesting and lacks amenities to bring it up. The holes make use of the area but it feels like they tried to squeeze too much out of the small patch of woods while the open portion doesn't offer much of interest. If I went to college here or lived close by I would likely play here regularly as, at worst, you have several open fields to practice in. As is, I will likely not go out of my way to return.

Nice easy to follow fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

If campuses from any college want to put fun activities around them that can draw in the locals , a few out of towners , and especially the students that attend , then they have to do it right . Miami U of Hamilton took a small tract of land ( I am assuming that they weren't allowed to use the northwest portion of the property ) and made a 9 hole course . Some effort went into installing some pretty good baskets , some good signs and big enough gravel tees . The course is located behind the gym on campus . You might have to park in the street when the gate is down or during school hours . When your bearings are straightened out and you find hole 1 , you will be facing a row of trees that force you to either crank a hard right to left drive around them , or a slight left to right running parallel to the building and dropping down at the very end to the basket which is in view . The next tee , is abnormally long because it is shared with #9's tee ( ? ) I can't see this being a problem as of yet unless disc golf picks up a lot in Hamilton . 2 is the most confused you will be on the course . The tee faces the #8 basket but you have to throw to the left and up an embankment to the correct basket . Rows of trees have been planted to make a tunnel for this shot , a nice touch . #3 is a straight but short level shot that sits under some trees that will only affect your midrange or putter if you throw too high . 4 is a tighter longer tighter shot that stays level until the last 60' ot so , then drops down into the edge of the woods . 5, in the woods is the shortest hole on the course , a 135' putter throw over an open dirt path , basket sitting straightaway slightly downhill . You stay in the woods for 6 , a left to slightly right over that same type of opening on 5 , Fade to the right too soon , and you will hit some brush and be behind trees , stray left and get stuck in heavier brush . 7 would probably be my signature hole if I had to choose on this course . A tight tunnel shot that starts in the woods rolling a little left , then opening up straight to 20' out of the woods to the basket . 8 is a short blind shot left to right where you are throwing to the basket that you originally thought was #2 when you started ( make a note of how deep and where it is when you are on #2 teepad so you don't have to walk down #8 fairway to see where it is again ) . 9 throws back into #1's fairway to a basket protected by the building , the tree row and a small hill in front of it . A fast play that utilizes what elevation the course designer could muster , and a fun round for the newbies , locals and best of all , students . Course flows well and not a lot of walking between holes .

Cons:

Just the specifics . #1. short course offers little challenge to anyone that is considered an every week player . #2. Some of the tee pads or fairway throws could result in someone getting buzzed by an errant throw during the round . #3 . Brush can get greedy with your discs and cost you time trying to look for them or dig them out , especially on blind throws #7 & 8 . No benches or trash cans ( hey , it's a quick 9 holer , so lighten up a bit ) at the holes , so carry in and carry out . #4 maybe the tee signs could be a littler further away from the tee pad . #5 be wary that this course could be muddy after a rain , especially for holes 4-7 .

Other Thoughts:

This is a brand new course , so don't put it down until you get a feel for it and try a round or 2 . This is in no way a destination course or one that you would go too much out of your way for , but one that could test your short game if you are in town for something or combine with another course like Cabin Creek . This is a course that whispers " Play me and enjoy for the next 30 minutes " .

Pretty fun 9 Hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A nice short 9 hole that offers some good variation and some tricky shots. I found myself using all kinds of shots in my round as some holes offered low ceilings and some forehand/backhand anhyzer shots, but also straight shots and hyzer shots. I like the fact it is away enough from the main campus as I had no problem with traffic on the course.

Cons:

The tee pads were a little hard to get used to and slipping on the rocks were pretty common for me. The rough is really bad and I can see some discs getting lost here. The holes overall were all pretty good and playable, but hole 7 was a big miss for me as it seems nearly impossible to make it anywhere near the basket on your first shot. Also the poles with the hole number can seriously get in the way on some holes.

Other Thoughts:

It was a fun course to play and glad that it is near me. I probably wouldn't go too far out of my way to play it but if you are in the area it would be a fun time killer.

18 hole update 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 25, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Recently updated from a former nine hole DG loop just behind the gym and baseball field at this small college satellite campus, the Miami U Hamilton course new has 18 holes. Basic tee (number only), mixed baskets (DD Patriot, Lat 64 & ?), and usually good next tee signage are pretty clear and easy to follow for first timers, as long as you know that hole 1 starts across the soccer field out front, and that hole 4 goes to the left, and not at the nearest basket (straight to 10). You'll throw some variety here, with open shots bordered by a prairie grass field, over a freshly planted grove of trees, under the branches of a pine guarding basket, down narrow wooded lanes, with most of the new holes back out into the sunshine.

The tees are solid enough gravel for now, which kicks around some. In a couple of spots you could conceivably throw from the adjacent sidewalk (2 & 18, for instance). Baskets are fairly lightweight and shallow-caged, but do have 24 heavy chains that catch pretty well. Hole distances range from about 150' to about 390'. So the course is approachable by casual to recreational level skill players, but the newer holes favor intermediate to advanced arms. In all, it's a decent layout for a quick round of disc golf, situated where other activities and non-players are unlikely to wander in the way.

Cons:

They fixed the old shared fairway on what were holes 1 and 9, but now the 2nd tee shot crosses the 1st fairway, and the 3rd tee is just 34' past the pin. With the 6th tee being in the preferred line of flight from hole 5, it would not be advisable to try to host a full event here. The shared tee on 4 & 11 is quirky, but works for now. Although they've opened up some of the edges well (at the corner of 7 & 8, and on the bend on 10), the wooded holes are essentially along a maintenance pathway that looks like it can stay muddy (and buggy?) long after a rain.

If you struggle to throw a really straight putter or a comet line, you might be kicking into some rough on holes 4, 8 & 9. If you don't throw tee shots in the 300' range with some accuracy, you might nickname your threes on holes 14, 15 & 16 as "lather, rinse, repeat".

Other Thoughts:

Campus security has stated that parking in the main lot is allowable if the gate is up (weekends and off-school times?). Note this is a non-smoking campus.
