A Yard Is Not Two Feet 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.104 Rating) A Simplistic open layout where skilled locals can aim for 9 down.
- ACEABILITY - The thought of smashing chains will be the only thing to keep skilled players entertained. Hole (2) is jump putt to some players being right around a 100 feet long.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - The perfect setting to teach someone the game. Likely a low traffic course and it's a very forgiving format. Great for juniors too.
- MAINTENANCE - Appears to be well maintained. I scanned through all the prior reviewed and none of them mention unkempt conditions. Schools in general, usually keep their grounds in check and this one is no different.
- NAVIGATION - Not perfect, but once finding tee (1), I personally had little trouble finding my way around. Tee (1) is located next to a building on the south end of the course layout. After that the transitions are either short or somewhat intuitive. With the tee signs mounted on the pads I could see some players strolling to the wrong pad on first play, but its just so open that everyone will figure it out with no more than an extra 5 minutes of recon.
- QUICK PLAY - Quick solos could bag this course in fifteen to twenty minutes.
- TEES - Passable. Rubber 5 foot by 10 foot pads. Little effort was made to level them as they follow the slope of the terrain, but I've seen way worse.

Cons:

Too basic for most players.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - I almost shot my first ever 9 down on a nine hole course. While on the circles edge on hole (9), I clanked my putt off the top the basket rim. This is a Beginners and Novice level course through and through. Five holes are completely open and the obstacles on the other four are generally simple.
- TEE SIGNS - A major goof on the tee signs. First off, I'm not keen on the idea of listing yardage. I've only seen that on a couple other courses. Second, the yardage figure is off by 1/3 less. Meaning they likely measured in feet, and then divided by 2 instead of 3. Kind of laughable for a trade school to make this kind of error.
- CHARACTER - Other than passable basics of baskets, navigation and tees, there are no other amenities or comfort items here.
- UNIQUENESS - Very bland. Shorter distances all together and most holes can be attacked from every angle. No water elements and elevation maxes out at 20 feet on any one hole.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Unless you happen to catch the setting sun over this open landscape, its very likely that the camera won't come out. I scored the course a 1.75 out of 5. The maintained appearance was the best aspect.
- SPACING - The course is jammed into a small space and beginners will likely throw into adjacent fairways. As stated above, likely a low traffic course so the poor spacing will normally not be a factor.

Other Thoughts:

I liked it for what it was, a low-key well-kept beginners' course. No reason for the serious disc golfer to head here as there are likely 2 or 3 better courses within a 15-minute drive. I personally would recommend nearby Riverside park. I'm sure Sandy Knoll is nice too, but I've yet to play there.

Tiny Ace Run course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Really nice blue powder coated DGA baskets here, that catch really well.

Great course for beginners, as it's mostly wide open, with just a touch of elevation on a few of the shots.

Ace runs abound....meaning that every hole is basically an ace run, with just a couple possible trouble areas. If you sail hole 1, there's some shule/drop off behind it. Hole 8 has a field next to it that could make searching for discs difficult. With that said, it's not inconceivable that you could score better than -9 here.

The rubber tees were nice, and in good repair. They could use a bit of leveling, but overall not too shabby.

Cons:

Super short...although you wouldn't know it from the tee signs. They're laughably wrong, but it really isn't an issue, as every hole is easy to figure out.

Navigation isn't quite as intuitive as you'd think for 9 holes in a field, but it's nothing that takes a ton of time to figure out.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a "bagged and tagged" course. Not much here will make you want to play it over and over. I do use it for warming up before tournaments at Riverside....nobody goes here, so it makes a perfect arm warming spot.

If I went to school here, I'd definitely get out and sneak in a couple 9's, just out of convenience.

Not terrible 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a small grassy field with some rolling hills. Several holes have minor elevation changes, adding a little bit of challenge and variety. There is some distance variation on the open holes, from short ace runs to one around 300'. Two holes play in the woods, both offering short and tight tunnel shots with rough that's thick enough to punish you on an errant shot. There are small rubber mats that are adequate tees for most of the holes, and number plates at the tees to help with navigation.

Cons:

The tees are lumpy and not level, not a huge deal but it's a little annoying. The wooded holes are so short they don't offer much challenge, and the other 7 shots are completely wide open and not long enough to challenge most players. Two of the holes bring an unmoved field into play, it looked like a recipe for frustration for the newer players this course is designed toward. Navigation is a little funky, with several tees and baskets in close proximity. This could also be a safety issue with multiple groups playing at the same time.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find this course very approachable, and it offers a quick and non-punitive intro to the sport. More experienced players won't find any real challenge here, and not enough variety to make it worth going out of their way to play. I like seeing beginner friendly courses on campuses like this, it's a good way to introduce new players. That said, my rating still reflects how this course stacks up to the others I've played, I try to rate every course on the same scale and this one just doesn't have enough interest to rate highly for me personally.
