Jekyll and Hyde

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The back half of this course is why you want to come. I usually start most of my reviews with comments on the natural and scenic aspects and Tomlinson Run doesn't disappoint here. You just have to be patient to get there. The back nine gets you into wooded holes. You play a couple of pretty tight pine lanes, playing along the top of a ridge. Once you drop down in you wouldn't even know you were still in the same course. There is an old resort down there. There is an old swimming hole and a lot of old stone features that remain from long ago. You play along a rippling creek to what appears to be an old mill house, but looks like where the Blair Witch lives. From there you wander down a nature trail to a few holes that play along some wetlands that are in rehab. This entire stretch plays along a creek with birds all over the place. There is so much interesting to see that you forget you're playing golf because it feels like a nature walk.

The majority of the course design is pretty generic, but there are a few nice holes. That 11th Hole is a postcarder. You drop straight down 150 feet to a basket hidden well behind some guardian trees. The 3rd Hole is a good one, with a long fairway arching right into a narrowing passage. The front of this course needs arm. Most of the holes ask you to hit 300 - 400 on a Par 3. There are some trees in choice places to make them a bit more than just hauls, but you need length. The back nine needs accuracy. You'll play some lazer straight fairways.

The course has benches a lot because of the nature trails that wind their way through it, so plenty of places to stop and enjoy a view. There are bathrooms with running water available and plenty of parking. Picnic pavilions could be had if you want to squat.

Cons:

The vast majority of the front nine is completely forgettable. I'm just not a fan of fairway golf and that's what this is really. They built it around a large parking lot complex, so you're using the spaces on the sides. Most everything just relies on the challenge of throwing 300 plus on your drive so you might be within putting range. There are some trees in places, but nothing that ever felt limiting. They aren't bad holes, just look like hundreds of others.

The holes after the nature walk are all a bit confusing. I have played here twice now and cannot find a 15th Tee. No matter where it is, that's not a good shot and is basically throwing over people putting out 18. The next hole is a good one, but feels like a bit of luck to try to birdie. The worst part of it is that you finish that 18th Hole and you're nowhere close to your car. You either hike up a hill and down a road with no curbside so you're in car danger, or you walk the course backwards. It's not good course design. Mostly just feels like they used every inch they could, which is great, but not fluid.

The tees are a mess. The front mostly has turf mats, but most are covered in leaves right now. As you get to the back, they disappear also and you're mostly playing dirt tees from there. There are only one set of tees, also. The signs are pretty much just distances and a line, nothing helpful. They need navigational signage desperately. The course doubles back on itself a few times with no help. I got lost the first time and played the wrong hole. There is no help to get you to the final four holes without an app.

Other Thoughts:

It's very much a Jekyll and Hyde course. The front 9 isn't worth a drive from outside of town, but the back 9 is one of the best "walks" of any course in the area.

Tomlinson - Hang In There For The Back 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tomlinson Run is a State park with a disc golf course near the front ( Near swimming pool ) . The park and course are free . Bathrooms if the pool or putt putt course are open .
The Equipment - Starting off , the tee pads are turf and nice for the first 7-8 holes , then go natural once you enter the woods . The signage was interesting . The wood posts are numbered , and the small plastic covered signs are on the tops of them and are informative enough , plus have next tee arrow in them . The baskets were Chainstars , and in good shape .
The Landscape - The course was mowed , branches trimmed and in good shape when I was there . The holes are mostly flat . and it goes from park-style on the first 7 holes ,which circle around a pool area , to park-style + semi woods and woods holes the rest of the way . The course gets harder and more scenic once you enter the back 10 , with the woods , the rock formations , the creeks coming into play , the cliffs .
The Highlights - Hole #3 ( 420' ) is a level more open drive that will eventually force a left to right fade into a tight green with a huge bush guarding the front and right side . #5 is a slight downhill 375' , open until the end , with the basket in a core of trees . #11 is a great downhill putter run , teeing off a small cliff . and running between trees and rocks . #15 , 430' is a drive over a creek with a current , into a tight woods area . Squeeze through the small woods , and the fairway opens up wide . #18 is a good finishing hole . Tee box is in some woods , you throw out of it into a more open fairway . The basket is flanked by a couple of trees , and the creek directly behind it . Hit the creek and you will lose your disc .
Signature Hole - #13 400' . From an elevated tee , your drive has to break left to a narrowing fairway , then break right at the end to the basket .
The Time - it took me an hour and 15 minutes to play the course , but 10 minutes of it was walking back to the car from #18 .
If anything , Tomlinson Run is a nice long walk through a park that just keeps getting better looking every few minutes .
Pack water . you are going to need it . Bug spray during the summer might be a good idea , too .

Cons:

#1 Safety - not terrible , as most of the holes are spaced , but there is a real dangerous part where the #11 putter run off the cliff's basket and green are in the same general spot as the #14 tee . A real easy way to get hit . A couple of fairways are parallel , like #12 and 13 .
#2 Navigation - the first 7 holes are easy to follow . #8 is across the street and back a bit ( Print the map ) #9 tee pad is near the entrance , After completing #11 downhill , you have to go to your far left and over a bridge to play #12 and 13 before coming back over the bridge to play 14 . Don't skip these holes . They are among the best on the course . #15 is a very long walk along a cement path , which you are never sure if you are going the right way . Some Next Tee signs would work well for these holes .
#3 Long Walks - Some walks are brutal here . Getting downhill after teeing off at 11 , the walk to the hidden tee at 12 , A very long walk from 14-15 , and 600 meter + uphill walk from #18 to your car , depending where you parked .
#4 Disc Risk - Medium - High . Starting with #9 There is a small path for a fairway , with a slight uphill to your right , and a cliff to your left . It almost claimed my approach disc . If it goes over , you might have to write it off . Some overgrowth on parts of the course , but the heavy running creek can eat your discs on 11 , 12 , 14 , 15 and the putt/approach on 18 .
#5 Tee pads , It might be time to turf the rest of the pads . Natural pads can be awful to throw from .
Inclement weather . You may not want to play here after hard rains . The course looks like it might not drain well , and getting down to the #11 basket might be an adventure .

Other Thoughts:

I have mixed emotions about Tomlinson Run . Part park , part woods , it gives you some looks that force you to think . . #9 is a great risk/reward drive , but the cost for the average person playing it might be their prized midrange/driver , and you only have to skip a little of have your disc stand up on its side after hitting a rock or the embankment . IMO , I would pull that hole and transfer it somewhere down the hill between #14 and #15 . adding a nice par 4/5 maybe . People know that the course is here . I saw a couple sets of locals playing while I was on my round . Also , once you find Hole #1 on the course , there is a small parking semi circle right underneath it . If you can park there , you will save yourself a lot of steps in the beginning , and especially the end . Great Variety of holes here , and the Fun Factor is here ( as long as you don't plunk your disc ) . Opportunity for both left and right handed players .
My Recommendation - Good for families , newbies and intros , at least for playing the first 8 . Enough holes and length to keep the intermediates and up at least a little interested , as they can use the first 7 as a warmup . Locals will like this course . Travelers may not want to come off the beaten path , unless camping here or visiting nearby . There are a lot of options . Course Collectors may want to add this to Chester City park and Thompson , or Beatty and Bud Billiard if going south . Don't go too far out of your way , but YOU MAY WANT TO GIVE THIS ONE A TRY !!!

Tomlinson Nature Walk Run 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ All tee signs are engraved into some kind of permanent plastic slate. They will definitely last a long time but cannot be easily altered if there is a change to one of the holes.
+ Basic but functional turf tee pads on the first seven holes clearly show players were to start.
+ Half open, half wooded.
+ Things pick up after hole seven... mostly.
+ There are a few lovely views and walks through nature here- especially the walk between holes 14 and 15.

Cons:

- The tee pads completely vanish after hole 7. For the most part, players must guess for themselves where the tee area is among the roots and dirt near the tee signs.
- No designated practice pin or lost disc box.
- There are no 'next hole' signs here. Granted, most of the holes are so close together as to not be necessary, but finding holes 8 and 12 would have been a lot easier if there were some kind of sign pointing the way.
- Holes 11 and 14 collide, and there is a popular walking path right through them. Throw with caution.
- Hole 18 ends nowhere close to the parking lot and hole 1.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole to play here was hole 11 because it is a downhill tee-off at the top of a short cliff. It is the only hole with any noteworthy elevation, and I must say that it was pretty thrilling.
My favorite hole to look at was hole 15 because of the rockface, trees and river all around the tee pad. It felt like a different park at that one spot.
My least favorite hole might be the very first one because of how plain it is.

As for the course as a whole, Tomlinson let me down a little after picking me up a little. I'll be straight forward about it. The first seven holes are bland and boring because they are flat and nigh featureless with wide open fields dotted with trees. I tricked myself into thinking that the whole course was going to be like that.

But then, two friendly locals using pin 7 as the practice basket pointed me towards hole 8, and new life was breathed into the course. Once I entered the forest, saw the slanted landscape and the creek down below, I had renewed hopes. After that, the rest of the course was in the woods. I loved having to plan my lines carefully at the risk of ricocheting towards a creek that was present for pretty much the rest of the course. And the lovely downhill glide from a small cliff at hole 11 came at just the right time to set me up even more.

But then I had no idea where to go to find hole 12. There are no next tee signs here. I meandered through the nature paths for at least five minutes (a lovely walk, I must say) before realizing that I had to cross a nearby bridge and backtrack up through 13's fairway just to get to hole 12. If there is a more direct proper route, please tell me. I couldn't find it.

From 12 on, the golf became flat again. Yes, it was in a quiet pretty forest. I loved the setting of the back nine, but that didn't change the garden variety nature of the fairways themselves. Still, the golfing is competently presented. Just because it isn't my ideal course doesn't mean that others won't love it. I neither loved it nor hated it.

Bottom line: nearby players really should pay it a visit at least once if only for the peaceful and pretty back nine- despite the rocky and rooty tee pads. If I lived closer, I probably wouldn't mind being a regular here. Speaking as a visitor, it will be a long while before I come back again.

Very Fun Intermediate Course in the West Virginia Panhandle 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Tomlinson Run is plain gorgeous once you get out of the first few holes. Most of the Back 9 provides up close and personal views of the South Fork River. So if you enjoy hilly disc golf with a view, this is where you want to be.

+ Tomlinson Run is similar to Thompson Park, but not carbon copies by any stretch. Tomlinson is a little easier and a little less punishing on the legs. The natural tees are in way better shape than the ones up in East Liverpool. Also I just think Tomlinson is overall a more fun course.

+ The first 7 holes are longer and more open than the rest of the course, but are designed well and not at all out of place. Mature scattered trees make them as nearly as challenging as the rest of the course.

+ #11 - #14 are the best holes on the course in my opinion. The best of which is #11, a straight down drop, with the tee area right on the edge of the top of a giant rock formation. There's water behind the pin, and it's easy to overshoot this one since it's a touch under 200'.

+ The course is extremely easy to navigate. There's not a ton of navigation assistance, but most tees are pretty close to the previous basket.

Cons:

- Tomlinson suffers from the same issue as many courses in this area. The tees outside of the first few holes are all natural. #11 is an epic hole, but there's no designated area to tee off at. Please, somebody who is more local to the area raise money for this.

- The flow gets a little messed up after #14. Even though the walk between 14 and 15 is scenic, it's around 700' long. Then, you have to follow that same path all the way back to the parking lot since 18 doesn't end by your car. That walk is over 1000'.

- Tee signs are hard to see in the woods. They're just tiny brown posts that aren't very detailed.

- #14's tee is too close to #11's basket for my liking. The course doesn't seem insanely popular, but it is something to note if there's others out with you.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, despite the lack of tee pads, Tomlinson is more polished and more fun than Thompson. Many shining moments made me want to play again, but it was already getting dark when I finished (curse you winter).

I highly recommend making a trip down here. It's a little more rugged than the courses I'm used to playing in my neck of the woods, but overall I enjoyed it

Some Fun, Interesting Holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great layout. First seven holes had moderate foilage, while the last eleven holes were all wooded.
-Solid Discraft baskets.
-Good hole length with quite a few over 300 ft.
-Tees were mostly flat.

Cons:

-While the tees were mostly flat, they were still just grass/dirt.
-There were a couple places where it was really tough to figure out which direction the next tee was.
-Hole 18 doesn't end where 1 begins.

Other Thoughts:

I was really happy with this course. The front 9 was good, but I was really impressed with the back 9. They guys did a great job designing it, including the creek and ravines in just the right way. With gravel or concrete tees, this would definitely be bumped up to a 4.

Very Nice State Park Course with Great Variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This course is located in a very nice state park in the tip of the WV panhandle. The course has every possible amenity nearby - ample parking space, multiple bathrooms near the parking lot and throughout the course, garbage cans, and water fountains inside park office. There are also numerous activities at the park: a pool, basketball court, sand volleyball court, camping, multiple pavillions, and a putt-putt course located alongside the last few holes of the disc golf course. The park is very well maintained, there were 3 or 4 guys mowing while I was there, that is a good sign of how important park maintenance is here.
-I think the best part about this course is the great amount of variety of hole types here: 1-7 are long and open with a few trees, 8-14 basically play through paths and open spaces through the woods, and 15-18 are located in more densely wooded areas. Both hyzer and anhyzer lined holes are present here, as well as a few holes that stress tight, straight shots.
-Tee signs tell you the hole length and next tee location
-Chainstar baskets in very good condition
-A nicely paved, much needed walking path from holes 14-16 through the dense woods/rough with multiple bench along the way
-A nice stream comes into play on a few holes
-The front 7 play around the parking area, so you can easily access your car at any time between these holes

Cons:

-No tee pads present
-I'm not a fan of these types of tee signs that are located in this area (Thompson Park). The wooden poles can be hard to find in the woods as they don't stick out, and the signs themselves are very small.
-Some bad course flow after the first 7. To get to 8, take the path to the left of the bridge. I walked over the little bridge, which takes you to 10's basket. Also, you can easily walk past 11's tee, look for a path to it on the left after 10's basket. After 11, you have to walk through 13 to get to 12, walking around the bathrooms to the left, alongside the stream.
-There is a far walk between 14-16, but at least there are multiple benches on a nice path. The course extends further away from the starting point as you play holes 8-18, so the walk back from 18 to your car is absurdly long
-First 7 play pretty close to the park roads, hole 4 even plays across the road on a blind shot, so be very careful here
-9 and 10 play along a very steep hill. Most likely will be able to spot your disc if it rolls down, but it will be an awful attempt to retrieve it safely.
-Not much elevation change, except for hole 11's downhill shot

Other Thoughts:

This course is similar to Thompson Park, but a better version of it. Both parks start with fairly simple, open holes and then venture in the woods. The difference here is that Tomlinson's wooded holes -while not as beautiful- don't come off as gimmicky, and have more clearly defined fairways. The first 7 play around the open area of the park. While they aren't very exciting, they are all fairly long distances, giving a good warm-up to the start of the course.
-Hole 11 was very enjoyable to me, as you throw off a small cliff and keep it straight for an ace run at the basket
-12-14 are fun holes that require distance and accuracy. I appreciated the clever pin placement on each, and these holes are risk/reward with punishing rough if you venture off the fairway.
-15-18 were probably the most enjoying holes for me, a great way to end the course with holes combining open space and through the woods, and a few holes strictly through the woods. There were multiple lines to throw for each of these holes.

A little bit of everything here! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The name of the game here is variety and the course is well balanced. Steep downhill drives, open bombs, OB's in play, guarded tunnel fairways, wooded S-curves, and water hazards are just some of the features to contend with here. I thought the designer did a nice job of utilizing the features of the park to make the throws more interesting--notably the road (holes 1-5), hillside (hole #11) and creek (holes 12,14,17,18).

Hole #15 is a wonderful 430' drive, of which 90 feet or so is just throwing over the creek. The rest of navigating mature hardwoods to a pin that is placed in the wide open!

Another notable hole is #9, which is your typical tunnel alley to the basket with many trees on both sides. What makes it unique is that an errant hyzer to the left could possibly go down a cliff about 100 feet. Definitely makes you think twice about chancing anything that fades left!

Hole #18 is a nice bookend to the course: a long bomb across a field to a basket strategically placed 25' from the water. Throw too far on your drives or putts and you're in the drink!

The course is really scenic. I played early in the morning and the fog was still lifting off the park, making for a nice atmosphere. It's as much of a photographic hike as it is a round of disc golf.

Cons:

The front eight kind of play like your typical municipal/town park, except the holes are longer. In retrospect, after playing the last 10 holes, the first few were a letdown. Throw this sweeping hyzer, do this turnover shot, avoid a few trees, blah blah. It's the back nine that really shine here.

I recognize that about 40% of the holes are over 400 feet, but it'd still be nice to have one or two MONSTER throws for the big arms. You know, those 600-800 foot ones. This could have been done easily on the first few holes, given the openness of that part of the course.

I agree with the previous reviewer in that the course tends to favor right turns; in this sense, the course isn't balanced. I found myself either throwing forehand drives or turnover anhyzers on a majority of the holes.

Unless I followed the map wrong, the hike from hole 18 to hole 1 is a bear! Felt like I was walking forever. While I dislike that it doesn't wrap back, I appreciate that the designers went instead for utilizing a part of the park with better land.

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, if the front 8 played like the back 10, this would be an elite course. I give the front a 2.5 and the back somewhere between a 4 and 4.5, so that's how I arrived at my total score.

This is a great supplement to the courses near Chester, WV and East Liverpool, OH. It's also not terribly far from Pittsburgh. In fact, it's about the same distance from downtown Pittsburgh as Moraine is. This wouldn't be a bad addition for Worlds in 2015, IMO.

Definitely worth a trip if you like variety in your DG experience, but certainly not for the hydrophobic!

Professional Convict 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Located in a pretty park with a variety of things to do, including swimming and miniature golf.

The holes that play near the clear and shallow stream, meadows, and rock formations are quite picturesque.

Nice mixture, with ~1/2 the holes 350'+ and fairly open, allowing for some grip-n-rip opportunities, and the other half requiring good control, offering challenging lines to be hit-then-held. A bit right-turn oriented, ranging from subtle-to-somewhat sharp.

Cons:

Safety: Access road/parking lot may come into play on front-7 - hole-4 has you throwing over the edge of a lot/road. Many baskets located near walking paths, bridges, and water access points, and some fairways double as popular meadows for non disc golfers.

Flow: A bit of a walk down the paved path from basket-14 to tee-15. A bit of a walk from basket-18 to tee-1.

Single (natural) tee / single basket position. Quite flat, except for cliff-drop #11.

Other Thoughts:

The course initially (1-7) plays, in a clockwise manner, in the flat, lightly-treed open space surrounding the parking lots, which surround the swimming pool. In this section, I liked the gently-but-continuous right-turning spiral of #3. Holes 8-10 play between the entrance road and the cliff, with 20' wide throwing alleys requiring right-turns late/mid/late. Left-fades on 9-10 could prove to be a disaster, as the edge of the cliff is quite nearby. A drop-shot down this cliff is number -11, followed by Z-shape cross-meadow holes 12 and 13. Number-14 is tight early and late, with water left at the end. After a bit of a stroll, you find excellent hole-15, having you throw across the creek early, through large hardwoods on the other side, then needing a sharp-right to run along the edge of a meadow. Holes 16/17 are similar - dead flat, straight, needing to miss random trees late (16) or semi-continuously (17). Out from woods, across meadow, over picnic tables, to basket-18 beyond, finishes the course.

Holes 12/13, which I like quite a bit, epitomize both the pros and cons of several holes on this course. For the pros, both are ~400', playing across a Z-shaped meadow, needing a sharpish left at the midpoint, followed by a sweeping right. Basket-12 has the stream lurking on the left, and tee-13 offers you a rare, elevated launch point. For the cons, they share the same meadow, so potential cross-fire. There are a bunch of picnic tables stretching from the water a bit into the meadow, with the last table being in the prime throwing lane - and this section of water, and tables, are popular with non-players. Blind basket-13 is located within a few feet of where the bridge will be dumping patrons enjoying a stroll - until a disc comes whizzing at them! :-(

There are plenty of good holes here, but (potentially) plenty of opportunities to negatively interact with non-players (other players, even). You, and non-playing park patrons, will enjoy your round much more when park attendance is low. Definitely worth a visit, but come on a gloomy weekday. :)

Gets better the longer you play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The back 9 of this course is very good. It winds through the woods with some long narrow driving lanes. The scenery around the holes is awesome too.

Cons:

The front 9 is a little boring because it is just 7 holes around a wide open park. Even though its boring its not short or bad. It just is not too exciting.

Other Thoughts:

Course could use some tee pads but it is mostly fine. This is an above average course tucked away in West Virginia. If you live within a half hour it is worth a look. Also there are a few other courses within 10 miles around.

Seems like it has been here much longer 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 23, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

(1) This course is pretty new, but the lines and shapes seem like a much older course (which is a good thing).
(2) Clear lanes on each hole and the pars seem very fair, requiring the ability to throw some long and accurate shots throughout.
(3) The beauty of this course is really in the back nine, where you go down and play near a stream that runs through the park.
(4) Plenty of room for more holes.

Cons:

(1) Natural tee pads. While these are some of the flattest natural tee pads I have seen, they are getting worn in and muddy and the course isn't even a year old. Some crushed gravel, or fly pads, or concrete would really help.
(2) Course appears biased to the left-handed player with a lot of right turning holes throughout.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1: Nice long uphill par 3 with a road OB on the right to watch out for.

Hole 2: Another long uphill par 3. A couple lanes present as you negotiate the trees in the middle.

Hole 3: This is a nice long open par 3 that makes a right turn and necks down into a lane. Neat layout. Pin is ticked in to the right.

Hole 4: Here you throw out of a tunnel and the road comes in from the right presenting an interesting OB penalty.

Hole 5: Here you throw down a big open lane to a pin tucked left and guarded by some older trees.

Hole 6: This is a long wider tunnel drive around some big trees. While the main line appears straight down the middle, there is also a RHBH hyzer line if you throw out towards the pavilion.

Hole 7: Is a shorter (than the previous holes) slight right turning drive.

Hole 8: Here is a shorter, wide tunnel with a basket tucked to the right.

Hole 9: This is a long, tight tunnel that bends lazy right. Keep track of your throw as a disc that creeps too far off to the left is going off of a cliff that drops about 40 feet straight down.

Hole 10: Still in the same tight tunnel track as 9. This is a sharper right turn.

Hole 11: This hole is a spectacular downhill ace race pin. Beautiful tunnel throw, nice trees, an old building, and a babbling brook in your view. Prettiest and most memorable hole on the course.

Make sure you turn left after this hole to find Hole 12.

Hole 12: This is a sweet S turn left par 4. It has a nice open front end, then tightens up as it Ss back to the right for a finish. Water very much in play to the left on your approach.

Hole 13: Another nice S turn left par 4. This is a bigger hook of a drive, then it Ss back to the right for a finish that is tucked in close to the stream. Don't go long.

Hole 14: This is a really tight right turning throw, out of a tunnel, through an open spot to a pin protected by a small creek and some saplings. Neat old electric building on the left.

There is a long walk between 14 and 15 down the paved jogging path.

Hole 15: This has a short opening run-up that present two lanes to throw into across the stream. If you can get it out of the lanes and into the open space beyond, you should have a nice approach to leave a short birdie putt.

Hole 16: This is a treed in shot where you need to navigate large old growth trees and an earthen wall on the left. Pin deep in a hollow where the earthen wall meets the stream.

Hole 17: This is a shorter tunnel right turn. Big water hazard left as the stream is close to the throw the whole way through.

Hole 18: This is a longer open field par 3. Drive out of a wide tunnel exit and into an open field.

Long walk from 18 back up the paved jogging path, then uphill to hole 1. There is plenty of space to add more holes back here, and it looks like this may be part of the design.

Distance+Accuracy = Tomlinson Run 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 20, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baskets - newer course and the baskets are obviously newer. Nice Chainstar baskets.

Challenge - while I'm pretty new, I think experienced players will enjoy the challenge this course presents.

Scenery - beautiful park with about half the course playing along a shallow creek.

Amenities - restrooms, garbage cans present and in good condition, park offers plenty of other activities too.

Cons:

Layout - There are some holes that are pretty tight to each other and some of the tee areas are really close to the previous basket. Holes 4,5, and 6 present a real possibility of hyzering into traffic (see more below). It's a bit of a long walk back to the parking lot, but at least its a nicely paved trail.

Tee Pads - there aren't any tee pads or even toe boards, I don't know if there are plans for them to be installed or not but toeboards would probably be adequate. Most of the tee areas were flat and free of roots, but on a couple holes I wasn't entirely sure which side of the tee sign was inteded as the tee area.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really nice park and a very solid course. It offers about 7 long par 3's right off the bat that will require distance and accuracy to have a chance at par. Most of these holes have a few trees scattered about that will require you to hit your line to maximize the distance.

Holes 8-10 are a bit more wooded in the form of tunnel shots. 9 and 10 add a steep cliff down to the creek along the left side creating some tense moments while watching the disc flight (especially for us RHBH throwers without a solid FH). Get off the fairway on these holes and it could be a pretty rough second shot.

Hole 11 is a really sweet, short hole (shortest on the course). The tee sits atop a cliff with the basket nestled in the valley nearly tucked behind a tree. I almost skipped a shot into the basket on this one.

Holes 12-18 play through the woods and are pretty standard wood holes with just a touch of individuality to each. There is some decent distance on these holes, but you'll likely have to hit a tree gap to get into a good upshot/long birdie position off the tee. 14 is a pretty nice anhyzer shot near what looked like an old mill.

I was a bit concerned with my throws off the tee on 4-6 because they could easily have hyzered into the road. The roads aren't too busy, but cars travel fast on them so I'd recommend being mindful of this and wait for a break in traffic. I don't think the park gets too much play (we did see maybe 3 groups out) but some of the tighter holes/fairways could be hazardous to players if a disc gets away from some one.

I know distance and accuracy are key skills for a well rounded player, but this course really seemed to put a premium on the two coexisting. Some courses seem to focus on one or the other by having tightly wooded holes that are short or long holes in open fields. Tomlinson Run does a really nice job of blending the requirement of the two skills together. A lot of the holes will appear similar but they all seemed to play unique.

I really enjoyed the round I played at Tomlinson Run and look forward to heading back in the spring time. This course will present a good challenge to those lacking distance and accuracy. However, if you can consistently hit your lines and have a good arm you'll be rewarded with birdie (and even eagle) chances. I definitely recommend hitting up this course whether you're experienced or newer to the game.

Tough Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Once you get to the first hole there is a wooden box that has a nice map and scorecard that you can take. The signs are pretty good and it makes getting from hole to hole pretty easy. The back nine is a lot of fun back in the woods.

Cons:

The first hole was a little tricky to find, but once you find it the signs are good to get through the rest of the course. The natural tees aren't really worn down at all, but if the course sees more traffic they will get leveled off and worn down some. The only other con was the walk from the end of 18 back to the parking lot. It isn't the worst walk I've had, but it is a bit of a hike up the road to the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

I'm surprised this course hasn't been played more or had any reviews written.

Holes 1-7 are simple, level holes that make a circle around the pool near the parking lot. They are a bit tougher than they would seem because they are a little long(Some over 400 feet) and there are some trees in the way so you can't just fire away.

Holes 8-10 are still pretty level but they take you into the woods where you have to navigate some tight spots through the trees.

Hole 11 is a fun hole that tees off from the top of a 10-15 foot cliff. The hole takes you down into a small valley with a creek runnng through it.

Hole 12 is runs beside the creek, it opens up a little bit and you have some distance to cover to get to the hole.

Hole 13 runs you back through the same field that you had to travel across on 12. With a couple of big trees in the way, it makes for an interesting drive.

Hole 14 is another cool hole that has you shoot out of the woods across a small clearing into another patch of woods. There is an old building in the clearing that you have to shoot past.

There is another short walk to get to hole 15.

Hole 15 makes you shoot across the stream that the course plays beside. If you dont hit any trees the stream doesn't really come into play, but it is still a neat tee shot for this hole.

Holes 16-18 criss-cross through a small wooded area with another small clearing.

After 18 you finish near a mini golf course and have to take the road back up to the lot.
