Clearly a Labor of Love

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 14, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This rambling course has clearly gotten quite a bit of love and attention in its installation, from great baskets which change to red bands for the back nine, to the installation of gravel paths and turf tees, to the clearing of underbrush on the wooded holes, to the construction of the double mando fencing on hole seven, to the map kiosk and signage at each of the 36 tees. It appears to be geared toward recreational to intermediate skill levels from the shorter tees, to intermediate to advanced skill levels (more 'D'!) from the longs. There is as much usage of the gentle slopes as could be managed, requiring the player to have a good feel for ranging the open field shots to get in close for your potential deuce putt (on the downslope holes for this old arm, at least).

When the course goes into the woods, you can clearly see that there are gaps to shoot which would give a reward, but you will also note that hitting that one …trouble ...tree (!) can be disastrous. The design loops you back to the start for a front and back nine, and cleverly utilizes the same space twice, so you can somewhat scope out the challenges ahead as you play the 'other' loop, or enjoy the space once around lightly if you only have time for a quick nine. In all, it seems to be a beautiful property for a great round of disc golf on a sunny, dry, temperate day (of course, we stopped by on a partly cloudy, 29 degree, slightly breezy Saturday, but could sense the potential…)

Cons:

The main issue here is the marshy, flattish areas they had to utilize. Might want to give it a pass in the rainy season, no matter how much they've tried to help so far. Then there are the turf tees, which may be a future project to make more level with compacted, boxed gravel, or otherwise upgrade. My only other major complaint would be the distances you may have to walk from hole to hole, with some likely confusion for first timers in finding the next tee (the holes do seem to 'interact', even if they do not cross). Folks like me who are resisting the urge to let an app like Udisc interfere with my disc golfing serenity will want to take a picture of the map, at least until someone posts it here on the real disc golf course site. Oh wait… just done :)

Other Thoughts:

I hope the folks who are putting so much effort in here keep up the good work, and allow constructive feedback help them to tweak and finalize this interesting piece of land into a really nice course. It's the only one 'in' Pataskala!
