This may seem a bit random but please stick with me as it is topical :)

As probably 99% of the people on here don't realize today was the kick-off event for the FIRST Robotics league. FIRST robotics is a group/event that involves many students in various grades. Every year they get a game that they have to build a robot in 6 weeks in order to compete in the event. Now this may not sound very exciting for you or anything but this year's game is about disc golf. This year, teams have to build a robot that throws discs into various targets in order to get points for their alliance.

The reason I posted this here is because I figured everyone here would be semi-interested in knowing about this, but also to see if I could try and use the DG buzz in order to help promote a group that really does marvelous things. I can understand if people aren't interested or if these types of posts aren't allowed, but it'd be great if we could generate more FIRST fans from disc golfers and more disc golfers from the FIRST robotics people.

Here is a link to their animated video explaining the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa5MGEZNrf0

My cousin thought short circuit 2 was better then the first. I think johnny 5 could dominate, she didnt think so. Clearly the first was better than the second.

I can't be certain, but it sure looked like the two robots @ 2:12 were trying to make robot babies. :gross:

Seriously though, that is kinda cool.

My mom is a teacher in middle school and her robotics club has competed nationally for the last few years. They have made robots do all kinds of stuff... I guess this year is disc golf robots -- Awesome!

I'll ask her if her class has to build the same thing...

It varies by ages, so I don't know what the middle school aged kids are doing

I just saw this and did some research. The local kick off was today. Doh!

The next event in Cincinnati, Ohio is 21-Mar - 23-Mar-2013.

I will have to remember that.

This looks like a really cool event! Kinda reminiscent of that show Battle Bots from the late 90s / early 00s, but without the whole 'try to destroy each other in an entertaining way' aspect.

@2:15ish in the video it says human players can try to throw discs into the targets for points (while using a really funny animation of 'someone' putting, can someone make a gif of that? :D) Whichever team has someone who can bang uphill putts from outside of the arena is going to win. That almost seems unfair..

But I will definitely keep an eye out for an event in my area and follow along on YouTube.

Just build a robot with an actuating pincer on a 1000 foot telescoping arm.

The human part of it makes me wish I was back in high school so I could dominate :p

Thank you,

P.S. our FLL team won our regional competition:hfive: and will be competing at State tournament Feb. 2, 2013

I think it's only unfair if someone can reliably throw discs 60' through a small slot that is angled downward. The throwers are usually confined to a 2' X 2' spot directly behind the glass, and the target is on the other end of the arena.

FIRST robotics has released its kickoff information for 2013. Your wish will come true approximately March 1.

... uhhhh ... what?

Really? Amazing! I coach first lego with fifth graders and made it to state, one of groups took overall champions of the robot section, the other group(my team) got 3rda in the skit. I loved first lego league and it is a great team building and socialization competitive outlet for kids who may not be into athletics, gonna try and start one down here
