Man steals discs

So according to the blotter, an employee at the Sports Authority witnessed the guy stuffing discs down his pants, went up and talked to him while he continued to stuff discs down his pants, then watched him walk out the door, get into a car, and drive away with the discs? At no point did the employee try to stop the guy? Or alert other employees to maybe help stop the guy?

The guy stealing the discs is a scumbag, but don't these stores train employees to stop shoplifting anymore?

No, they probably train them not to stop people-at least thats how it was when I worked retail.

I watched two morons steal four cases of beer from a grocery store in broad daylight. There were multiple witnesses. Two store employees ran out and yelled to them to stop, but of course they didn't. I asked them what the policy was, and why they didn't stop them. They said it was against store policy, and they just have to let them go.

What kind of pants was he wearing to fit $500 worth of discs in there??

Most places tell their employees to not attempt to physically stop a shoplifter. They don't want to risk an employee getting shot or stabbed over some merch. Although that usually applies if they are visibly armed, maybe they just don't want you to do anything with anybody.

Merch is replacable and much cheaper than PR, workers comp, or injury/wrongful death lawsuits. Most corporate retail stores don't want their employees playing hero for that reason.

Also...that's like 25 discs in sports authority prices...he's not going to get far with 25 discs in his pants, lol.

Dude I worked at a circuit city before they went out of business and we would have stopped him regardless of the policy. We always stopped shoplifters. We even went so far as to lock the front doors so all we had to do was wait on the cops one time.

Yeah, merch is replaceable, a life isn't. Many shoplifters are drug addicts with nothing to lose, trying to get money for their next fix or pay off a debt, and they often have knives, or needles that might contain hepatitis or HIV, sometimes even guns. And most shops have surveillance cameras, so get the footage to cops and let them deal with it. No reason to try to be a hero and get killed or life otherwise ruined.

Also the value of the crime is almost always inflated in the police reports. I hope I don't see any of that yoyo on our courses; he's toast if I do.

Sad that stores cant/wont do ANYTHING. I believe if the store video shows ass holes steal, I say security NEEDS to shot ti kill.

Don't forget the chance that a vigilant employee with no security training falsely accuses someone, tackles them to stop them, causes a "neck injury," and then you get to payout that lawsuit over what likely would've been a couple hundred dollars or less worth of merchandise recovered.

These things happen, and when you add up the risk you take in letting untrained employees accuse customers it's not worth the merchandise saved.

When I worked at Target 15ish years ago, their policy was not to do anything physically to stop a theft. We were encouraged to talk with someone who looked suspicious, if nothing else but to let them know (subliminally) that we were watching.

Basically, companies either invest in trained security or accept a percentage of losses. The gray area in between contains a lot of risk.

Probably stole all the overpriced tie dye discs that nobody buys.

I think studies showed that most shoplifters were actually teenage girls, and the amount shoplifted was less than 30 bucks. But I digress...

It is very dangerous to stop some shoplifting because, aside from the "fact" (it was a study, so who knows who ran it or what the bias is) I pointed out above, I'm sure a family could sue if their loved one, God forbid, got killed trying to defend a store. Screw it, let him have it.

The knucklehead is probably just going to try to sell them to PIAS anyway.

When I was working for Lowes in management, I almost lost my job for chasing a shoplifter one day. HR chewed my butt out for it -- but he stole from ME. It was MY margin that was walking out the door. AND the girl running commercial sales had taken off after him, too, so I wasn't the only one in trouble. I'd have caught him, too, if I wasn't so fat :D

It's pretty insulting when you're chasing a shoplifter and he looks around at you and stops running.
