[Other] What Was Your First Disc(s)

My first discs were a DX Roc and Aviar in 1998. They were both in the bag for many years, both eventually broke and are hanging on the wall in my garage.

I played many times in the late 90's/early 2000's with borrowed discs, but I started playing and collecting actively when I got a part time job at this bike shop to supplement my (lack of) income being self-employed. I got the job because I loved cycling and had really enjoyed my first job as a bike mechanic back in high school. Unfortunately a knee injury took me away from riding a few months after I started.

We also sold disc golf discs, so at lunch one day I grabbed this DX cobra that had been returned to lost and found and walked to the local 9 hole course. I met some random people to play with and had a blast. I got back to the shop and called the number on the cobra but it was disconnected. So I kept that and started basically buying every mold that sounded good to try it out.

A huge perk of all this was that as I made disc golf friends, I quickly built a customer base for our store. After we kept selling out of discs, my boss agreed to let me take over ordering and even go to Innova to get our orders each week. I would take custom orders and then get to spend hours in the warehouse scaling and searching for discs. I wish I could have kept that job forever, but unfortunately it doesn't pay more than about minimum wage.

I still have my old Cobra. It is so worn it can only do roller duty any more, so it stays in the closet, but I will hang it up some day. I also still have my second ever disc, an old pre-Barry Champ leopard. I lost it once and had to buy it back from the local raker, so that one was also relegated to the closet. I got my first two aces with it and have been swimming for it at least 5 times.

8 years ago, having never played but living blocks from Golden Gate Park, a buddy and I each bought the DGA beginner three pack. 150 class Cyclone, Squall and Reef. We played 5 nights per week with those. Beat them to hell.
Grew out of those pretty quick and bought a Star Aviar and two Rocs, one KC and one DX. I still use the Aviar sometimes. I still carry that KC always.
Few weeks ago same buddy and I played a round with our old DGA sets and had a blast. They are both in my basement if anyone's up for a real challenge.

The first disc I played with was a DX Shark, out of a starter pack I got my dad for Christmas. He played with the Leopard and Aviar. The first disc I bought myself was a DX Wraith, which was a very frustrating disc, and it lives in a pond now. Then I bought a Dx Stingray, Gazelle, and an R-Pro Polecat from Disc Nation. I lost the Gazelle in it's first round, but I still play with the Stingray and Polecat sometimes. I eventually got another Gazelle, which I also lost, then another, which is currently in the closet.

A Champ Banshee gets honorable mention, although I don't quite remember when I got it. It's lost now, but I really loved that disc. I cried when I lost it :( Lots of Polecat/Stingray/Gazelle/Banshee rounds.

Ahhh... the good old days when I was in college and used to play with a Stingray, Cobra, Scorpion, and and Aviar. This was before that super high speed 7 and 8 stuff came out ;)

After playing my first round with some random borrowed discs, I was hooked. The next day, having no clue what i was doing, headed straight to PIAS to make the obligatory "Noob's First Purchase."

I ended up walking out with an Innova starter bag full of frustration. A max weight Firebird, Z Hornet, and an old #2 Putter. (But it floats!!! :| )

After a 2 week long hyzerfest I finally stumbled upon this gem of a website. I still bag the 'birds these days, but I definitely know what they're for now lol.

DX shark was my first disc and it is the definition of beat at this point. A buddy of mine and I played one disc casual for years. And we'd play on real courses or made up playground courses or down the street or wherever. Second disc was a 4 chain magnet. Dog got ahold of it at some point and I never really played it much until I decided to start trying to learn the game in a more dedicated way. But once I did, I putted with it until I decided that I liked a soft magnet better.

Valkyrie and Aviar. No clue what happened to either one of those. H*ll I had my bag of frisbees stolen when I was in High School and Swore I would never play a sport with that kind of low life again... ha that didnt last.

DX Raven, given to me by a friend who still throws them. I got him a couple of the Factory Store star plastic ones they used to have for his birthday a few years ago.

After playing for an entire summer with my buddies in high school with just ultimate discs at our local city park course. A local disc golf club happened to be out there while we were playing and lent us some actual disc golf discs. The 4 of us went together and placed an online order to get free shipping and I purchased my first two discs. A swirl APX which I somehow lost long ago, and a swirl XS that I just recently lost. I played every summer for 3+ years with just those discs before I became addicted and started buying/trying lots of plastic and playing more seriously the last 5 or 6 years.

Ahh the DX Raven, my first 'good' disc (first disc was a DX Jaguar I got for my b-day in JANUARY, that thing was really huge). Picked up my Raven from a store long lost to memory (PIAS maybe). Lost it in the woods years later.

Recently picked up a 1995 vintage Raven off Ebay a couple months back and wonder how I used to play with only that disc... Good Times! :)

I had a 'false start' in '91-'92. My buddy had a Griffin, Raven, Shark, Viper, Cobra. I did best with the Shark and bought myself one. Put it like 60 degrees off-line into a pond...and didn't play again for about 17 years...LOL.

A co-worker of mine invited me to throw with him at lunch. He gave me a DX T-Rex to use - that was my first disc. With my initial poor form it was a pure fade machine. I would aim 45 degrees off the line where I wanted it to land. But I became hooked on the sport so I stopped by GGGT and bought a Maximizer based upon Joe's Flight Chart and the amount of cash I had in my wallet . At the start it was easy for me to throw straight, as my form improved it became my turn over disc. Still have it - it's a pure roller for me now. I was such knucklehead when I started........

I think mine was a cheap gateway or dga midrange. I bought at Woodland mound visitor center, and the second round I played with it, it got impaled by a giant thorn on a tree, lol.

The most beautiful marbly pink/white star Rhyno and Pro Valyrie. Stolen. Thieves took nothing else from the car. Just took my discs and took my cd player cover off

still have my first three discs. dx shark. dx spider. and dx aviar. the aviar is the only one still in the bag. oh yeah i used to throw a ton of dx wraiths but i lost every dx wraith i ever owned. since then i dont throw anything over speed 9.

i almost lost my aviar in the water. it was hung up by a rock. luckily i was about to grab it before the might mississippi took it away forever. i plan on having that thing till it cracks.

I still bag a maximizer, and it's one of my favorite drivers. I get between 300-350 with it and it's easy to throw. And I'm still a knucklehead!;)

A buddy and I bought discs for a dude who had discs in his trunk at Albert Oakland in '88 or '89. I bought a Phantom+ and he bought an Aviar XD. We really didn't have any fun and he left his disc in my car. I played from time to time with those discs but I'm pretty sure they were still in the trunk of that 1980 Buick Century when I sold it.

Thought I'd get a nostalgia thread going because I was being nostalgic and looking at my old discs. So what were the first discs you owned? For me, I bought a white with rainbow stamped polecat(dyed black), a blue with red stamped eagle, and I was given an old dx teebird. I still have the polecat and teebird...eagle broke many years back I have pictures of the teebird and polecat
