Hucker Magazine

eh. your opinion. thanks for sharing. its a bit outdated (IMO).

i don't think its unacceptable at all. piracy - in its own strange way - is being proven to actually HELP content creators. either people NEVER see your content... or they see it for free and possibly end up supporting you and your advertisers in the future (See: G.O.T. DVD/Blue-ray sales despite being the most pirated content in the history of the internet).

the first option equals zero extra money - end of story. the second may equal zero but, at least, has a chance to turn into something more.

pretty easy decision for anybody that understands how the media industry is trending.

What is a bit outdated, paying for stuff?

amazing how you can infer that from my post.

the whole point is that you will get MORE people paying if you allow a large group of people who otherwise would have never paid to, at minimum, get a sample of your content for free.

again. these are people who would have NEVER EVER paid you in the first place.

either way. we now have scans in the thread and we can, at least, preview the content.

you're welcome.

The design looks nice, for sure. Can't read the text enough to get a feel for it, but it will catch people's eyes. Good start.

got my free shirt sometime last year since I ordered on black Friday. got the magazine last week. well done magazine.

We aren't talking about People or Rolling Stone here. We are talking about an upstart magazine that had to use t-shirt money to get the first issue printed.

Maybe they can grow it to the point where each issue sold isn't important, but tight now they NEED the funds.

Magazine is pretty sweet. I'm not a big Avery Jenkins fan but I can't fault them for that. If anybody is listening for feedback my favorite topics would be disc reviews and articles on how to improve ones game. These are far more important to me than what's going on with tournament - just one man's opinion of course.

And oh yea - I want my f'n shirt. LOL - kinda...

I agree with him. Articles about improving your game and discs reviews. But not just discs, maybe backpack reviews and other equipment.

Looking to get my hands on a copy, sent them an email and still haven't heard a response yet. :(

I love print...Long Live Print!

Nothing like holding a real glossy printed magazine full of content and pictures that someone did their own layout and design work to produce a representation of a subject they believe in.

yep. sucks its almost impossible to make a profit in 2014 focusing on print-only as a startup.

I'm curious how much money they would have made/could make if they split the subscription into print and digital. Print pays more, gets a few more long form articles and non-digital exclusives. I think they could end up making some waves in that fashion.

Anyone order Hucker Magazine? They are screwing over a lot of people including myself. Ordered 3 months ago, still have not received issue 1 or anything. Then I read that they need to raise $4000 for advertising before they will make issue 2. COMPLETE SCAM. If you already ordered, I would contact them...If not, I'd stay away from Hucker Magazine. Just read the reviews on their page.

Now they blocked me

Did you contact them about the first issue? I did and they mailed me one immediately.

They said on Facebook that they are having trouble getting advertisers for issue 2 so they may move to all digital. If they do they said that they would send all the people who subscribed a disc.

If that's what happens I'm fine with it.

I don't think anything is a scam. Perhaps it was tougher to make a magazine then they initially thought. Too bad. I really liked the first issue.

I work in the catalog and graphic design field.

From the look of the scans online they're got some really good designers and photographers. Both really impressed me.

But printing a high quality magazine both in content and in materials (glossy heavy stock paper ain't cheap) in going to be incredibly difficult in such a specific industry like disc golf.

I would suggest they go almost completely digital with free content or very low cost subscriptions. Then save or collet some of the high end photography and do a year end coffee table type book. Also, take all the "How to" or "Professor" articles and collect them at the end of the year in a book and sell that.

I would also suggest a news section for quick stuff on the website and an article section to do long form type stuff. On SI.com Peter King MMQB has done a great job branding itself with long form articles and in depth stuff. Stuff that your run of the mill post can't cover in a few paragraphs.
