Finnish putting game

I got a request on Finnish forums to make a harder version, because it seems that some people (while destroying our self esteems) never have to use 5, 6, or 7 meter tees.

So i have added "orbital bombing"-tabs. They are basically the same game, but they use 10-15 meter range instead of 5-10 meter range. (Max points 1500.)

Bombs away:

After 12 games my high score is 441 points so I think I'll be sticking with the 5-10 meter version for quite a while :(

New world record: 788 by Kari Vesala.
(Sounded very disappointed as he has a nice obsession with 800 pts.)

The same guy threw 672 in orbital bombing. Feel free to beat that!

2nd game 596! Funny to be disappointed for 4 points.

Few changes from game 1 - added 2 putters so I have 5 the same. Big help in walking back and forth. Also added the rolling stool (aka baby stroller) so I could wheel it to my position and set the discs on top. Not even sore this round after the same 100 putts.

May be able to add 50-60 points after that it will be much tougher.

Has anyone else found themselves yo-yoing between 5/6 & 9/10 meters? From the long distances I tend to get 0 or 1 so then from from 5 or 6 meters I make 4 or 5.

Great drill and please let us know when an app comes out - iphone please!!

Tried the game for the first time yesterday. What I also tried for the first time yesterday was putting with a VERY stiff tailwind. Holy crap what a difference. From 5m I really didn't even have to throw- just let go of the disc and it would find its way to the chains. Needless to say my score was pretty crappy- 284. I'll be interested to see how it goes in normal wind conditions.

That's exactly what happened to me. I really enjoyed this game, but I spent very little time in the middle. If you're constantly missing from 10 and hitting from 5, then you should be spending time in the middle as well. This game doesn't allow for that. The only way to hang out in the middle if you suck from 10 is to miss several from 5 or 6... Which is an embarrassing thing to do!

Maybe a small adjustment to how it is played- scoring would be a pain- but you START at whatever distance you normally would, but when you make a shot, back up a tick.

So if you started at 6, make one, move back to 7, miss two, make one, back up to 8, and sink it- end up with a 21 for that round.

A good putter with a random crappy should wouldnt have his score deflated quite as much either.

Heh, i had similar thoughts when i started to train with this. But keep playing, it will even itself out.

My current stats of positions where discs are thrown after almost 50 games:

from 5: 4 %
from 6: 16 %
from 7: 19 %
from 8: 21 %
from 9: 21 %
from 10:18 %

As you can see, they are quite even (if not counting 5)

You obviously need practise from the 10 meter mark, so this way you get to practise it a lot of it. Getting your sorry ass back to the 5 meter mark ensures that you have proper motivation to do well the next time you go to 10 meter mark.

Yeah. I was starting to hate myself. The last seven rounds were bouncing back and forth from 5 to 9, but the last round I managed to adjust and hit 2 from 9... It just took a while for that to happen. No worries. I enjoyed it and plan to do it as often as possible. It's just like my regular game in the sense that I'll be able to track improvement (even if that improvement still puts me worlds behind my friends).

Thanks, This is fantastic! I try to putt every day. This game added some pressure and routine which was sorely lacking in my other practice "routine". Best so far (indoors at full distances) after a few games was 404.

That's how I practiced before, but no score. I have yet to have time to practice putt though. I plan to some tomorrow before heading to the course to practice the new tourney layout before the weekend.

Heh...shot a 374 this morning, (with my winter gloves on at an elevated basket). It will be nice once things thaw out and I can move the basket back down to flat ground...and try it without gloves.

Alright just ran through the first time. I scored a 410... I was feeling noticeably tired after 15 rounds. I got stuck at the 7 meter mark. I happily did not have to use the 5m mark a single time. I already knew my putting needed more work than the rest of my game...
I look forward to tracking my stats. I also plan to mark the string on my retriever with 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 meter marks so I can play at the course as well as home.

Interesting thought would be for someone who is good with stats and computers to compile scores/averages for people playing this game and compare them to player ratings. It would be interesting to see how many people putt below their ratings and how many above.

AGAIN. Thanks for sharing the game and the spreadsheet! Its great to have good people in disc golf.
