2016 Pro Worlds

I hope Ricky wins by more than 2 strokes and this is a moot point. I'd hate for an honest mistake on a confusing rule cost McBeth #5. Paul can't catch a break lately.

The way that hole is marked unwittingly leads to confusion because there's a nicely mowed wide pathway leading from the drive landing area to the island green. It has white OB flags at each of the four path corners that also makes it look like the path is inbounds even though there are no flags along either side of the pathway.

MisplayGate is just another example of why artificial island greens suck in general and are a poor design choice.

(If it's not surrounded by water, it isn't an island. End of story.)

That being said, McBeth should have known the rule and how to play it, regardless of how poorly worded it was. Props to him though for recognizing his error and owning it, as the spirit of the game requires.

Now, someone needs to go back and watch all the available footage of play at Hole 7 at GBO to see if anyone misplayed. :|

Seems kinda silly and unprofessional when the best player in the world, playing the world championship isn't instructed how to play a hole appropriately. Paul certainly wasn't trying to break any rules. Someone should of been on that hole explaining which clowns mouth to throw through.

Chuck couldn't you just make those two strokes disappear? I mean come on you are the numbers guy. I kid I kid.

Have not had a chance to catch up with anything on the Open side. What a shock. I got a couple more hours of work then I'm off to watch the first two rounds. Is Paul's reaction recorded anywhere? I'm curious to here his reaction. Props to him for admitting the mistake and taking his lumps.

This has the making to be an epic Worlds disc golf documentary. Having the class to recognize and admit his error, then come back and win the whole thing. Everyone loves a little drama.

I hope he wins after all of this, or at least lose by less than 2. And the caddy book should be clear-as-day with no room left for interpretation. Paul can't be the only one to have misplayed, and I hope all video is looked at and other players come forward who did the same thing. Just an embarrassment for the TD and the sport. Here's to hoping none of it matters!

And when the history is written, let it emphasize the honesty and integrity of Paul McBeth. The stakes go beyond the final scores of the tournament; prestige, 5x Innova discs vs. 1x Lat 64 discs and all of that for years to come are in the mix. But McBeth stepped up and did the right thing. In a world where corruption rules (especially in all levels of Government, but I digress), it is extremely refreshing to see some honesty and integrity. That goes for Catrina Allen, as well.

His misplay was on film. He didn't really have a choice but to own up to it, as someone was very likely to notice if he didnt say anything.

I agree with SD86; perhaps my English is bad but this seems quite clear to me. If OB off the tee go to DZ means exactly that. If you land OB nothing else matters, go to DZ. After that, play from last place IB. That is, once you play from the DZ it's last IB. Then as a point of clarification, to play from the island you have to land on it. I need to go reread, but as of the moment, I don't see why there is confusion.

But no one had caught it and likely wouldn't have. Ditto that for Catrina, who likely wasn't on film. And with all the confusion on the rule, it's likely everyone would've thought he must've done right. IMHO he stepped up out of integrity, not fear of getting caught.

Actually, I think I figured it out, and its pretty bizarre. Caddy book for hole 7 says (exact quote emphasis added)

The bolded part is really poorly phrased. Paul's second shot in round one crossed the island and went OB out the back. So he played last place in bounds, which is what the second sentence tells you to do. However, the third sentence tells you something completely different. This is a total cluster. I wish this would have been caught sooner, and I hope it doesn't end up costing paul 2 strokes, as it seems like had an honest interpretation of the caddy book.

Again, I agree with SD86, it's that word - subsequent - that distinguishes the drive off the tee that lands OB vs other throws. Paul and anyone else should have known better. BTW, he did the same thing at GBO. I wonder if they changed the rule? That might have caused confusion.

I've heard of similar things happening in BG. The consequences for getting caught are just too high so they self report. I'd argue that we, as a sport, are increasingly pushing for fair play. Paul is as much a part of that culture as anyone.

It's last point in bounds after the tee shot, except that it's actually not because of the island green. So when you miss the island, having already crossed the island, your not playing last point in bounds. Even though it says "All subsequent shots play last point in bounds". Which raises the question, which is fair, of where your lie is when you miss the island, because it isn't last point in bounds because that point was on the island you didn't make.

Did I make that confusing enough?

The consequences are no worse, it'd be the same penalty (I think). Kind of like the stuff at the US Open ball golf tournament; the player thought he did no wrong, and it took slo-mo zoom camera angles to tell that the ball moved.

If they'd come to Paul and said he did wrong, he'd have said okay. But I don't think getting caught was in his mind. I think he realized his mistake and wanted to do the right thing. I know this is extremely rare in the world today, so it's hardly recognizable. Ergo, I'll give him credit for doing right.

That isn't what it says. It says if OB go to DZ. It doesn't define if you pass over something therefore, if you drive and land OB, even if your throw circles the moon, you go to the DZ. OTOH, if you lay up and then go OB you're okay, hence the subsequent.
