Watching the new Jomez 2018 best shots vid and thought about something which I have been thinking about this year which is ... Uli is really good and has been for a long time. Then I thought about where he might rank all time. Then about a top 5 or 10 list all time. Here is mine, whats yours? (Im sure im forgetting someone important)

1. McBeth
2. Climo
3. Schultz
4. Wysocki
5. Ulibarri

6. Barsby
7. Sexton
8. Feldberg
9. Nikko
10. Anthon

I don't recall Ulibarri winning Worlds or USDGC so I don't get the logic of putting him ahead of others on that list except maybe Anthon. Being good for a long time isn't enough, when everyone on that list has been good longer than he has except maybe Wysocki.

Is Nikko really in top ten or so? I enjoy his amazing putting when he is running hot, but is he really a top ten?

Caveat... I have no idea really... Just asking

I don't disagree that Uli has been very good for a long time, but he's never won a major and I'm hard-pressed to come up with a significant win of any kind (NT, DGPT, etc) for him. He might make the Hall of very good for his longevity, but he's not top 5 material. Arguably, he's not top 10.

Guess it depends on the criteria you're using, but my top ten, in no particular order, would have to include Climo, McBeth, Schultz, Doss, Feldberg, Greenwell, Wysocki, Jenkins, and Stokely. The tenth spot could be any of Russell, Todd, Schusterick, Sexton, Koling, Locastro, Brinster, or Barsby (for their major wins).

He has won USDGC so I think he would have to at least be in the discussion. I would put Ulibarri on my list of "top ten all-time greats who never won the big one".

Also the OP left out Shusterick, who has 3 USDGC titles. Tough to argue against that.

Im thinking about the whole body of work over time. The analogy is Dan Marino...never won a superbowl but still played the position at the highest of levels for a long time.

Isn't Uli an Am Worlds champ? Does that not count?

Sure. It puts him right up there with immortals like Justin Jernigan, Tony Wilson, and Thor Holoch.

(no offense intended to those fine gentlemen)

He's not. But he is a top 5 physical talent.

Greatness is achieved between the ears.

I see where you're going, but I think Uli needs a few more years on tour (and/or a major) before he cracks any top 10 lists. If anyone deserves top 10 consideration for longevity without major titles, I'd argue Stokely has a better case. He was touring when few others were, and I think he lacks a major title on his resume only because for the bulk of his prime there was only one available to win and he had the misfortune of having to beat prime Climo in order to get it. I think if the 1990s had 3-4 majors a year to win like we do now, Stokely would have won a couple.

Didn't realize it had to be the "right" major to be given recognition, sorry...

Going to have to bump a couple of these off for Juliana Korver and Val Jenkins.

Edit: I mean bump them off the list, not murder them

So much recency bias.

You are correct, but I only have the knowledge and experience that I have. I would have watched all the old videos of less recent players, and I have watched what is available, but there just isnt nearly as much out there.
