Shaving cream marbling backgrounds on clear (champ,z,opto...) generally come out a little less vivid than they do on white star type plastic, but they look really cool out in the sunlight when lit up from behind. The technique is the same, but I've found I get better results when I mix my shaving cream as concentrated as I can get it without it becoming too 'soupy'. I like to use liquid rit mixed with shaving cream in a small squirt bottle. I've not yet tried the idye poly but imagine it would also work great. Sometimes I'll also add a 'pinch' of powder to the mix which comes out as cool little specs of color in the marbling. I usually set up my shaving cream at night and then let the disc sit overnight anywhere from 8 to 12 hours.
a few more examples of the SC method on clear type plastics:

I have a request can someone who has this technique down make a how to video? I have read all the info but would benefit a lot from a video that covers all the steps and mixtures that are used/needed for the shaving cream method.

If I owned a video camera SteveO I would, it'd definitely be helpful. Thx DyeingtoPlay, some great results on plastic I would not have thought to try the marbling on.

Thats cool. Maybe someone else who knows how to do it well could do a video?

I remember seeing a video somewhere that used the SC technique to dye fabric with a classic marbled paper type design. Only thing is.... I can't remember where:( I thought it was somewhere on this site, but if not it could have only been from a youtube or google search of 'marbling techniques'. I'll take a look around and see if I can find it again.
In lieu of a video.... my experience with SC has been just as Dan had originally described. Most important thing IMO is that the 'bed' be slightly 'wetter' than the color mixes. The shaving cream/dye mix should 'float' on top of the bed, but be relatively wet enough so that it can be easily mixed/swirled around. I don't have any exact measurements, but i like to make the bed about somewhere between whipped cream and beaten egg whites by mixing SC with a little water at a time. I then mix the colors a little lighter mix so it doesn't 'sink' through the surface of the bed. From there I usually lay colors down in concentric circles then use a bamboo skewer to scrape lines from the center outward (wiping off the stick after each line) to form anywhere from 12-24 'spokes'. Then between each spoke I 'drag' a line from the outside back to the center (and wipe off excess). That will create a cool 'twisted spider web' design. Also as a final step I will sometimes stick the skewer in the center of the design and then drag it in a spiral design to the outer edge creating an even more twisted effect.
Hope this helps. Keep on dyein guys

Great tips. I've never thought to mix the SC bed with water. Never thought to wipe off my mix stick between strokes either. Maybe that's just laziness...

I just straight up shaving cream for the bed, no water.

Me too unless i want it to be really swirly, then I use 3/5 SC, 1/5 H2O, 1/5 dish soap. I've found that just water will make it swirlier, but doesn't hold the colors where I want them all the time. The dish soap kind of stabilizes the mix so you can get more defined colors. Just don't mix it too hard or else your going to have some serious bubbles! When I am laying down color I actually put the tip of my bottle into the bed and drag lines through, then I add the color again onto the top, that way I get less blank spots without sacrificing my design.

I tried my first attempt at marbling.. I was going for a fire ball type storm effect.. I dumped my first 2 plates due to experiments then decided to dip in this one.. I got close to what I was hoping for.. I feel I can do better.I drew the stencil out in a few minutes, wish I had spent a little more time on symmetry.
I want to thank all the explorers before me that posted their results and technique you all rock..

I like the palette you got there man, but agree that the symmetry kinda throws it off. I always had to remind myself when I started to do dyes that I have to take the same amount of time and patience with every step or else you risk compromising the job. You made three beds, why not make three cuts? Keep dyeing, it's all about experimentation!

I tried using the little squeeze bottles once but had a hard time getting e shaving cream into the bottles. The ones I used had really small openings which was the problem.

I mix my dye with SC. But never seem to get the swirls you guys do. Maybe that's part of the reason why.

And I sawed the point off of a funnel to pour into squeeze bottles.
