For putting I prefer soft baseline plastics and for throwing a nice grippy premium one. Sometimes when I hold my Anode or Insanity I think an all-Plasma bag would be sweet. But I'm pretty happy with a mix of Neutron, Proton, Plasma, Z, Z Flex, Opto, Gold and 400.
As often as you see entire cards at the highest level of play not even pretending to watch each other's shots, I'd say it's pretty obvious the PDGA doesn't care either.
What worked for me: staying with my starting putter for a long, long time. I started with a Discraft starter pack and I stayed with it for more than a year. I really liked (still do) the soft Magnet that came with it, but I also knew what I'd wanted in a putter to be different. Then I tried the...
I basically only remember rounds as a good/bad gut feeling and even that is less dependant on my actual throws and more on how i feel when i walk to the next hole. It really takes exceptionally good/bad throws for me to remember them longer than it takes to walk up to the disc.

I'm using neutral putters in soft plastic for putting (Zero Soft Pures atm) and after a few hundred practice putts, they make great discs for short turnovers. For all other approaches/short drives, I use a dedicated neutral (Anode) or crazy overstable (Credo) putter.
First few times i played, the guy who introduced me lent me his Vision. Nice disc but a transparent disc in the hands of a total noob = a lot of searching. Think it took me six or seven throws to finish a 350´ hole; four of them might have been putts, though.
Personally I've found pretending to walk up to a lie to not work for me, just feels fakey. I like to pick two or three short holes that form a loop and play them like crazy. Maybe that's something you could try out as well.
Personally I'd recommend your go-to disc, whatever that is.
Something else might in theory be perfect for that shot, but IMO nothing can beat throwing even more shots with the disc you already know best.
At least that's my conclusion after trying to make putters work for approach shots for half...

Basically, I was looking for a no-fade Soft Magnet purely for putting and didn't care what it would fly like with an actual throw. Have come to enjoy the crazy short turnovers you can get from it once it starts to wear in.
Depends.
Winning a challenge.
Getting that one perfect throw during an atrocious round.
Recording a personal new best at my home course.
Keeping my head for an entire tournament.
Learning a new trick.
Most of all: Having fun.
