Any Experience With This?

I'm trying out something different with a club event that I am running in late March. My C-tier is going to feature MA3/MA1/MPM on Saturday and MA4/MA2/MPO on Sunday, in an effort to balance registration and encourage competitors to "double dip" and essentially play two different events/divisions in one weekend.

In the past, our large events have split up and done an Am day and Pro day, however we've never had great attendance on the pro day. My hope is that we can fill both days, but realistically we can go 60/60 and run a smoother event compared to having 90/30.

Does anyone have experience running a similar event? What were the results and is there anything you wish you did differently?

The Kalamazoo club in Michigan has been doing this for many years. Seems to work well for two day events. Maybe send a message to Larry LaBond, his contact details are in the link below.

When the PDGA officially added MA4, I ran the numbers and we (Illinois Open Series) started doing MPO/MA2/MA4 on Saturday, All others on Sunday. A couple years ago we switched it to MPO/MA2/MA4/FA2/FA4 on Saturday, all others on Sunday and saw an increase of players on Saturday. Not just adding women to Saturday, but others traveling with them.

It varies as to which fills first Saturday or Sunday. Last year we filled all of our events both days.

One thing to note now is the change in tour standards with regards to added cash. With pros split across two days you will need to estimate attendance and split that cash proportionally.

One thing to note now is the change in tour standards with regards to added cash. With pros split across two days you will need to estimate attendance and split that cash proportionally.

I'm not sure that's 100% true. If you're splitting days like that, then you're essentially running two separate events (two calendar listings, two reports, etc). Wouldn't the payout standards also apply as if they're separate events?

I'm not saying that you can, say, put all the money in MPO on Saturday, ignore the rest and call it good. More that if you split the added money between the days (say, the same amount to each day), then you can't really get in trouble for it so long as the money on each day is divided proportionally. For example, if you split $500 added by putting $250 into each day, as long as the Sunday cash is split proportionally among those divisions, you should be good to go.

Just seems too much to ask for a TD to accurately guesstimate attendance (assuming no pre-reg) and then hold it against it him/her if the guess is wrong.

I asked Big Dog about the specifically when the new tour standards came out. We used to advertise that all added cash was MPO only. If you wanted the added cash, that was where it was at.

Now (based on those emails with Big Dog) we have to make a best guess and split it based on those estimates. That only applies to the first $500. Anything beyond that can be thrown wherever you want.

Thanks for the help, Mike! I lucked out when I separated the divisions, because I ended up with the exact same split that is working for you now.

I have a lot of positive reactions to the format in our local Facebook group, and slightly less negative reactions . I'm really excited to see how this goes!

As an alternative for the cash problem on split pro days, sanction c tier pro/ b tier am and still add $500. It's a way you get to decide how the money is split and the pros will go where the money is. Unless your really concerned about it being a pro b tier.
