Pros:

Horizon park DGC is a great beginner level course. It's the definition of a pitch and putt course. The majority (7) of the holes are under 200'. Only holes 8 and 9 stretch out the distance a little. Barely at that. Both are under 300' I'd guess.

The course has turf tees that were in decent shape. Plenty long and wide enough for a course of this length. One tee pad per hole.

The baskets are newer Innova Discatchers. These are all in great shape and catch nicely. One basket and pin position per hole. Hole 9's basket is on an elevated mound out in the open field. Makes the final putt a little more strategic if you're not close or the wind is up at all.

The tee signs are nice. They're mounted on a 4"x4" and are nicely sized. They have a basic hole map, hole #, par, distance and tells you any OB that's in play. These are solid signs.

The course was in excellent shape when we went. The grass was mowed nicely in the more open/prairie area. Losing a disc is not going to be an issue if this is how it is normally mowed. The park was very clean and it probably won't ever be overly busy. There was one group of 2 out there during our visit and nobody else in the park at all.

Cons:

The course is not going to appeal to most players due to the lack of distance out here. There's also not much for obstacles. There's a few trees on the first couple holes and a chainlink fence on hole 8. Other than that it's just wide open.

The tee pads are starting to sink down into some of the frames. The turf itself is still in decent shape but I don't see these things holding up for too many more years.

Other Thoughts:

This is a decent little pitch and putt course. I don't throw far at all, even I was throwing putters off of almost every tee.

This is a great course for newer players or children but there's just not much happening here for any type of experienced player. If you're near here it's worth a quick stop, if anything just to check it off the list. Other than that I'd look elsewhere. Good for what it is, just not real exciting.

Pros:

Great beginner's course. Except #4 & #5, no obstacles in one's way.

Great for beginner's to practice fairway/mid range throws.

Good course to practice fairway/mid range throws.

Cons:

Could use a sign off of Kuhn Rd to point out park, almost blew past park.

Not challenging for intermediate and above players.

Other Thoughts:

Great course if one has about 20 minutes to kill and wanna play a quick 9 holes.

Appreciated the fairways, basket areas, and walk btw baskets mowed.

Pros:

Horizon Park Disc Golf Course is a really, really good youth/beginners course. If you were going to hold a "teach kids under 12 to play disc golf" clinic and you could imagine the perfect place for it, you would be imagining Horizon Park. The shots are short; only three shots top 200' and the longest is 250'. There are a few obstacles early with the last few holes being open. There is a cool pin placement on hole 4 and a gap you have to hit on hole 5. Hole 8 has an artificial gap (hole in a fence) and hole 9 has an open pedestal pin placement. It has some fun elements, it looks and plays like a real disc golf course and provides a little bit of challenge. It's a really nice course to take young kids to and teach them to play disc golf.

The tees are turf and are mostly level. The tee signs are good. The flow is easy to follow. The park is small but the holes don't really conflict much with each other. The park itself is well maintained. It would be a really good disc golf course except...

Cons:

It's not really a disc golf course. At least not the kind of disc golf course someone looking up course rating on the Internet would be looking for. It's a kid course; a beginner's course. It's one of the best of those that I've seen. It really pulls off looking and feeling like a for-real disc golf course. While you are there throwing your putter you can almost get sucked in that it's a for-real disc golf course. It's not really, though. There isn't any challenge for even a low-skilled Intermediate player.

Other Thoughts:

History: Horizon Park is what is left of a family farm from the 1800's that suburban Chicago swallowed up. Descendants of the family lived on the site until 2010. By then they had sold the property to the Library District with the agreement that the land would be used for a community purpose; the land is now leased to the Park District and the disc golf course is the only use of the 7.5 acre site.

If you end up near Carol Stream and have a chance to introduce someone to disc golf, Horizon Park Disc Golf Course is an exceptional place to do that. If you want a place to work on throwing your putter or a course that should boost your career Ace count, Horizon Park would make a nice place to do that. The park is much too small to have the space for long holes. It's flat with no water obstacles. They installed the most logical type of course that they could given the limitations of the site, and they did a good job of it.

However it's still not really a full-fledged disc golf course. If you actually want to play for-real disc golf, Horizon Park Disc Golf Course won't be able to give you that. Since we rate disc golf courses here on a standard of providing a for-real disc golf experience, I have to rate it very low. The course is actually probably the best youth/beginners course I've seen. Somebody needs to hold some "teach kids under 12 to play disc golf" clinics here.

Pros:

This course is great as a beginner course, or as a practice/safari course. There are nine solid baskets in good shape. One of the baskets is on a raised green, and another is tucked in amongst a green of bushes and trees, making for a couple fun putts throughout the round.

There are a few holes that have some interesting lines, which force a couple different shots off the tee. The course flows well and it's very easy to get through nine holes in about 25 minutes.

Cons:

The course is very clearly intended for casual/beginner players, as the disc golf here is not very interesting. The hole distances at this course are extremely short, and a few of the holes have zero obstacles.

The turf pads are somewhat slick.

Other Thoughts:

If you live in the area, the course can lend itself to some interesting safari golf, and can be good as an upshot practice course. It's also a good option if you are introducing someone to disc golf for the first time.

It's a nice course, but not ideal for anyone looking for a serious round of disc golf.

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Nice, well landscaped park is small but well kept
- Artificial turf tee pads, tee signs, and baskets are all of excellent quality
- A few very well designed holes considering the land they had to work with

Cons:

- Very short, very open
- One tee sign fallen over, not a fan of signs located at the front of tee pads

Other Thoughts:

This little 9-hole course could be a poster-child for doing the best with what you've got. Horizon Park exists on a tiny, flat piece of land with few trees, and it is a testament to the designers that even a passable disc golf course could be put in here. This course will wow no one, and challenge few, but it has very nice equipment, is a great starting point for beginners, and will hopefully pull in many new disc golfers from the surrounding neighborhood.

6 holes at Horizon are under 200', and 5 are completely open. This makes for a very easy round, and most experienced players will feel like they should birdie every hole, but it does not mean that the round is completely uninteresting. With a couple of holes forcing lines, an elevated basket, a guardian fence, and one of the nicest, most interestingly landscaped greens I've seen on any course, there are certainly things to like here.

The equipment is all very nice. New Discatcher baskets, astro-turf tee pads, and colorful, informative tee signs are about as good as you will see on any course. There is even a very nice information sign with a course map and rules of play. On my visit, the tee sign for hole 4 had fallen over, hopefully it is repaired soon. A personal point of annoyance: I dislike tee signs located near the front of the tee pads. Even if they are far enough away that there is little or no risk of hitting my hand on the sign while throwing or following through, it is always in the back of my mind, and can affect my throwing. I'd prefer the signs were located towards the back of the pad.

I likely won't return to Horizon, and there is little reason for most players to travel any distance to come play here, but for those learning the sport, this is the perfect course. If I lived in the surrounding neighborhood, I would certainly enjoy stopping by for a round in the evening to work on my short game, and it seems like a great course to bring kids. So, if you live in the area, take some friends or family to Horizon and grow the sport!
