Currently disrupted but still a good play

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 18, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

For a course on a relatively compact property they did a good job of creating a diverse and interesting experience. You start out with a little hyzer shot, but the road and creek for OB come into play right away.

As mentioned on other reviews 2-4 are unplayable as it appears their former land has been repossessed to create two soccer fields, but after that you have a fairly seemless play. Up and down the hills with shots mainly ranging between 220-350. Many have large elevation changes and there are a couple of across a valley type shots that are always fun as well.

Hole 17 was a standout to me as it's a top of the world style hole with a Creek about 20 ft long of the basket and a pretty tight line to hit off the tee.

Most of the pads were great, heavily textured even if they are not huge and the signage and navigation is rarely an issue.

Baskets are all yellow banded classic disccatchers in good shape and they have some fun placements on embankments and near the creek to give you a challenge.

This course really tests about every aspect of your game, shot shaping, wooded lines, dealing with elevation/water. It just doesn't push you to throw far. I never used anything above a 9 speed and anything faster than my Teebird wasn't really needed. Justice/Iguana got a work out though, this is a midrange throwers dream course.

Cons:

The main cons are that three holes are pulled, and I don't see where they can fit them back in. Most of the park is occupied by active recreation areas and as those are likely money making activities they will always have priority. It may just be stuck at 15 holes with a long walk up the hill to "5".

The other con to me is there are a couple of holes that are safety hazards. The walking path on 18 and the fact that it throws over one of those outdoor workout areas make it dicey at best. In seasons other than winter I bet it's near unplayable. You also throw around or over the somewhat busy road on several holes.

Design wise I don't have too many issue with it. Would dig a few benches, I'm not in good enough shape to walk up and down hills without a break lol.

Other Thoughts:

This was probably a 3.5 with all 18 in the ground and I don't think even not I can give it less than a 3 based on the merit of what's left. It's cleverly designed and other than the few issues the park itself presents they have done a good job here.

Just a quick note: Holes 3-5 and tee area for 6 are gone. Don't know if they have plans to reinstall them or not. Someone has recently mulched around the baskets, so they're still taking care of what's there.
I love this course. It's a fun course without much distance and many technical holes. Hope they reinstall when the soccer fields are complete.

Pros:

+Good tee pads, tee signs, and direction arrows
+Extreme variety (hook/fade, short/long, Mando obstacles) that keeps you thinking from hole to hole
+Great mix of shade, open, and wooded plays

Cons:

-Very public area, easy to hit cars/pedestrians
-Poison ivy and red wasps are everywhere, just keep an eye out

Other Thoughts:

A great course for both novice and experienced players. Provided challenging decisions about disc type/throw type for the experienced in my group, and obstacles to keep the novice entertained. Well worth the bit of a scavenger hunt to find the park

A pro level course disguised as a beginner course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-The park is outstanding. Great facilities. Easy access off I40.

- Tee pads are outstanding.

- Great baskets.

- The signs are perfect. Not only do they provide distances, they have great maps, detailed OBs and even provide rulings for when going OB.

- No bad holes (see below).

- You can tell someone who plays designed this course. No tweeners, no impossible angles. No 90 foot hole followed by a 470 foot hole, etc.

Cons:

-As mentioned by many people, safety is a major issue here (See below).

-Felt like distances were off. Many holes I was coming up 30 - 40 short. As a 960ish player, I shouldn't consistently come up 30- 40 short on each throw.

- The land out there is fantastic. I was disappointed that the designer never chose to throw along the side of the hill. It was always directly up it or directly down it.

Other Thoughts:

If you look at this course on paper, it's very beginner friendly. Par 54 and no hole over 350 feet. However, beginners have no business playing this course. This is why I titled my review "A pro level course disguised as a beginner course."

As a 960 player, I had no issues on this course. Throwing along a road multiple times, being forced to go directly over it twice and choosing to go over it as the easiest way to the pin wasn't a major issue. Neither was throwing directly beside a soccer field twice. I have the ability and knowledge to know when I can throw and shouldn't.

However, these are major red flags for a beginner player who even if they possess the knowledge, don't possess the ability.

The holes in itself are great, however that is in the vacuum of ignoring where they are. Hole 2, for example, if you ignore the fact that you are throwing over a road and beside a soccer field, is a FANTASTIC hole. 290 forcing a straight shot directly uphill. But then you look where it is....

Also, don't play here if it's wet. Getting up and down some of the hills was hard.

I would not recommend this course to anyone below 900. It's simply not a safe place.

Sand..hill 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Layout - Sandhills has a little bit of everything and if I lived in the area I'd probably play this course more than any of the others I've hit in Asheville.

It has everything I look for in a course to play often. Each hole throws something a bit different at you. You have short/long, open/wooded-open/wooded, holes that move left/right. There's lines where you need to fade late or flip up and turnover/fade and some that make you get creative if you don't have that shot in your arsenal.

On top of that you have superb variance in elevation change throughout. Some you're throwing on high grades up/down and then on others you're more worried about fading off the hill or kicking down the slope if you miss your line.

I particularly like how the greens are set up here. They bring in danger with OB and slopes, but not overly done giving you a frustrating feeling.

The layout in a pure sense is set up to give you a really fun round that never gets boring. It's a nice place to work on your game and perfect a multitude of shots.

Equipment - Solid pads, baskets and tee signs.

Atmosphere - It's a pretty nice park overall and the course definitely has it's moments. 6 is a beautiful hole and I liked the look of 18 a lot as well.

Cons:

Layout - My biggest gripe about the layout in a vacuum is that from 7 to 14 you are basically playing up, down and across the same wooded hill. You get crammed in there and in some cases the holes kind of blend together. Considering a few of these tee shots are blind this can cause you to worry about incoming discs, or use caution if you easily kick in to another fairway.

A couple of the wooded holes are a bit of a stretch to me. It's forcing shots a little too hard instead of letting you be creative.

Notice I just said "in a vacuum"? The biggest problem with this course is that it's not in one. There is a potential for someone to get hurt or property to get damaged that could affect this course in the future.

There's two holes (2&15) where you throw over the road. As long as you are paying attention and don't throw really poorly they are not issues but the fact I'm saying "If" means the opportunity is there.

3 plays near a soccer field. Again it's wide open and as long as you use your head shouldn't be an issue. Though the day I played there were a lot of people around the basket and I had to skip it.

A few holes play along side the road and again they shouldn't be problems if you're smart.. this is getting repetitive.

The hole that is THE problem is 9. It's a blind shot straight towards the road with the basket sitting right near the road. I don't think it's a well designed hole from any standpoint; so the fact it's also a safety hazard makes me question what they were thinking here.

The other safety concern is in a couple places they need to rework the trail or put in stairs. Younger or disabled people could have problems navigating some of those slopes. Also the ditch behind 17 is a problem because it's so deep and steep to get in. They need to create an access point because it's literally right behind the basket.

I know some people are going to say they never have problems but it only takes one time. Also the fact I had to keep worrying about who was walking/driving near me was the biggest con taking away from the experience. One or two shots is understandable when you're crammed in to a multi-use park; I think in this case it went a little overboard.

The flow can be confusing if you're not paying attention and don't have a map (one is available on here) especially in the crammed in area.

Equipment - None really other than maybe the need to add some stairs and possibly a course map near the parking lot.

Atmosphere - Again it's a large multi-use park so there's a lot of other people not playing dg in the area so you don't get that secluded feeling I like to get. Some of the rough off the fairway is thick and ground covering. I didn't enjoy walking through it or having to look for my disc in it.

Other Thoughts:

I know people are going to wonder how I gave this place a 3 while also pointing out repeated safety issues. So I'll say again that as long as people are not being dumb there shouldn't be a problem... except for 9 which is honestly just a bad hole and dangerous.

This course is really fun and has a lot of really positive aspects going for it. It has more variety than courses I've rated higher than 3 so keep that in mind.

I'll also note that there seems to be a place (there's a carpeted pad) to bomb discs in to a field by hole 13. Basically I think you throw off the hill out in to the field, didn't get a chance to do it but definitely adds some luster.

I encourage people to hit this course up if you're in Asheville. It doesn't have the epic valley holes like Richmond Hill but overall I think it's more accessible and more apt for repeated plays if you're not a mountain goat.

Sandhill NTDGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has concrete tee pads

Has tee signs

Good mix of open/wooded fairways with doglegs and elevations

Course flows pretty well except for between holes 1&2, 3&4, 13&14, 16&17

Water comes into play on some of the holes but they aren't really a factor in losing a disc

Free parking (limited if there are soccer games)

Cons:

Needs next tee signs (had to consult the course map a few times)

Some holes play across the road or very close to it (one can expect some delays)

Some holes such as #2, #6, and #7 have some nasty rough that could use a trimming

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice multi-use course that I enjoyed playing while visiting Asheville. It's a short par 54 course but it is challenging due to some of the elevations and tight fairways. I would have enjoyed it more if I had visited when there wasn't a soccer tournament happening. The spectators camped out near the #14 tee pad meant I had to tee off closer to the pin. The traffic and the cars parked along the road near #18 made playing that hole almost impossible. Also, there's an awkward transition between hole 1 and 2 where a bridge over the creek is really needed. It was pretty neat to drive over the road through a tight gap at hole #15 after I waited for traffic to clear. This course would probably be better played on a weekday rather than on a busy weekend if there are soccer games present.

Pros:

I had a work trip in Asheville and thought I'd check out some of the courses here. Sandhill is a very nice park, and I feel this course is under rated. Course had a great mix of wide open and tight wooded shots. Fairways were tough yet fair in the woods. Great
Mix of left to right and right to left. I used a majority of my bag here.

Cons:

Course could use better navigation signs between holes. Also lacked benches and trash cans.

Other Thoughts:

Very good par 3 course. Highly recommend for any skill level.

Sandbaggers Delight 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 3, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Sandhills is a pleasant little, shorter course. Accuracy is key here - not just to score well, but also to avoid putting other park goers at risk!
- The course in and of itself is fine. I enjoyed the flow of the course. Despite a couple of flawed layouts, this course has a lot of variety to offer. The negative is that you can't completely take each individual course in a vacuum.
- The course does a job of building up the challenge. Hole #1 is a good opening hole - a little challenge, but also offer a birdie chance. The first six holes are open to varying degrees before you finally move into the woods on #7, and where the difficulty ratchets up a few notches.
- That said, there are birdie chances throughout the course. A very nice touch that this course offers three easy, birdie-able/ace run holes at the end of the round. After the most challenging hole - #14 - a tough 312-footer that plays straight uphill, holes #15 - 17 are all short - all under 200 feet, and all offer different looks. I missed a 20-foot birdie putt on one; nailed a 15-foot putt birdie on another; and had a real ace run on the final for a tap-in birdie.
- There is variety throughout the round. Holes #1-6 are 'open' in that they're on the grass, and not in the woods. Still you get wide open (#3) to tighter wooded (#4 & 5); uphill (#2) and a downhill, dogleg left (#6). In the woods, you've still got a good variance of doglegs, elevation-factor holes, risk/reward, and so forth.
- Course puts all the emphasis on the mid-range game. As stated, there are no long holes here and the average length is just under 259 feet. If you can control your mid-range shots, you'll do extremely well here. If not, you'll get frustrated hitting trees and be forced to scramble to salvage par.
- For the most part, this course is a rec-level/casual level friendly course. Coming from Charlotte, I'm used to heavily wooded courses, so this didn't seem like it would be a deterrent for a new player.

Cons:

There are a couple obvious flaws that should be addressed sooner rather than later. They seem relatively minor but could become bigger if left unattended.
- Course comes dangerously close to other park activities, especially with some blind shots. To me, the biggest culprit is #9. Again, in a vacuum, this would be an awesome, fun hole. You start out throwing in the woods to an open, downhill sloping, dogleg right, 307-foot layout. The problem is the park road winds around what's entirely the putting/approach area of the hole. If you go left, you're in the road. If you go long by 30 feet, you're in the road. The problem is you're throwing blind from the tee. I hate that it's only going to take one time for something to happen and this course becomes an issue. Sadly, I feel the layout needs to change.
- The second big, potential issue is the safety of walking up and down some of the hills. Holes like #2, 14, 17 need stairs, or at least better goat paths as people are having to walk up and down dirt hills. I was having to essentially penguin walk down #14 to get to the tee pad, throw my tee shot back up the hill, then walk cautiously up it again. Again, it's only going to take one person getting hurt and the course is at risk.
- The third thing is that navigation, as a whole, can be a little tricky at times. I had a map printed out, and even with it, I still had problems finding holes at times. Going from #3 to 4 was a little harder than should be. There's a stretch of holes from #7 to #13 where, at multiple times, you could easily walk straight to the wrong hole simply because it's closest or easiest to spot. The walk from #16 basket to #17 tee was bad because there was a neighborhood entrance to the park, plus walking trails, intersecting with the transition. Arrows and/or signage would be very helpful in these spots.
- There seemed to be plenty of unused land across the road (where #15 - 17 play) that could be incorporated into this course. This course could be better if it were spaced out a little more. I played right when the gates opened on a Sunday morning, so I had the course to myself. On a busy day, I think there could be some issues, especially in that stretch of #7 - 13.

Other Thoughts:

Sandhills was a great way to kick off a one-day disc golf trip for me along I-26. Even though I had to wait 30 minutes for the park ranger to finally show up (along with some locals who expected the gates to be opened at 7, not 7:55), I thought this was a great course for a relaxing, warmup round.
- The 18 holes themselves were fine. I'd take this course layout, and enjoy playing it frequently. Throw in the realities of this course's flaws - both current and potential - and it does take a little luster off of it.
- The course did achieve in making simple hole designs enjoyable. #5 & 6 were way too enjoyable for as simplistic as they were. #5 is a dogleg left, semi-open hole that has a semi-canopy of tree branches. Getting a 2 on this hole will require an excellent tee shot. #6 was the slight downhill, 352-foot shot that has the fairway narrow just after halfway, before opening up to a large putting circle. If you try to cut your tee shot too close to the left, you'll be in the woods, and will most likely take away any chance to salvage par.
- The course had that good recreational to mid-level feel to it, reminding me a lot of Sugaw Creek in Charlotte, in that regard. A great example here is on #6, which has a 352-foot layout that has the fairway narrow just after halfway, before opening up to a large putting circle. If you try to cut your tee shot too close to the left, you'll be in the woods, and will most likely take away any chance to salvage par.
- If you're from the region, think of a challenge level similar to Timmons (Greenville), Trails (Anderson) and Reedy Creek & Sugaw Creek (Charlotte). Add this to one to that category.

Update

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 4, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-I'll start off by saying that this place is nice. There is a huge parking area. Hole 18 ends right beside the parking lot and hole 1 starts around there. The place has a lot of potential and plenty of space.

-Holes that play over the road don't bother me. A few holes play over the road and I thought they were neat. Particular #18 as it can be played as a hyzer shot over the road and back into the fairway. The creek plays all along the left side.

-Very nice balance between hard core elevation and flat holes. There are a few steep uphills (one is extremely uphill!), one straight downhill, a few flat holes, but most have at least some elevation.

-#6 is probably the signature hole. This is an extremely cool hole, mostly open but plays over a small creek and through a gap over the creek. It's also the most beautiful hole on the course IMO. Read my other thoughts on my favorite hole here (hole #4). I didn't like it at first, but I've come to find that it really is an excellent hole.

-Nice 28 chain discCatchers. Great concrete tee pads as well. They are long enough for me to not foot fault.

-There is a McDonald's nearby. Plenty of gas stations down the road too.

-There's a poured pad on hole 13's fairway that allows you to throw a driver off of a huge hill and into the ball field. A basket is put in the middle of the field for the MDGE tournament. Nice opportunity to let some drivers fly

Cons:

-A few holes here are strangely designed or seem to be fillers.

#3: Not that this hole is BAD, but it plays across the recreational field, people may get in the way. It's wide open.

#5: This is a 280' sidearm hole, but the turn is quite severe to the right, and the rough is ridiculous! You will not sneak through the rough on the right side, you will get stuck. This hole isn't long, but it'll take a long upshot to birdie this hole.

#9: This hole is bad. Sorry but it's true. It just seems inchoate! It's a flick shot that first goes left and back to the right. It's like a mirror question mark!

It's not quite as bad as I made it seem in the past, but the gap is a good 180' from the tee and is pretty tight while the amplitude of the fairway is pretty sharp before the gap out of the woods. I think it could be a lot better.

#11: The tee pad is almost facing #12's basket and there are a few bad trees to the right side of the fairway that can kick you right into #12's green. It's a very gettable hole, but it's awfully close to #12.

-#13: Fairway is incredibly tight and crooked, but the hole is only 200'. 200' that is very hard to reach due to an extremely tight fairway that hooks right. It's reachable, yes. But it is aggravating.

-#16 and #17. Just short putter tosses. Both give a filler feel.

-Course gets incredibly rough in the summertime, so it's better to play in the winter. I've lost a disc on #17 and the overgrowth over the creek can literally hold me up over it. I am skinny by all means, but still, the fact that a ton of thorns can hold a human being over the water says something.

Other Thoughts:

-Some people like short holes that are hard because of their turns or tight fairways, but I'm not a fan of holes like that. I hated this course at first; I don't hate it anymore and I do think it has improved quite a bit. I was wrong about it, and there are other courses that I have been wrong about before. I've come to find that Sandhill is actually a pretty good course, it just isn't really my cup of tea.

-However, I have to say this. There is one hole here that I was wrong about. Incredibly wrong to where I have to go into detail about it and update this review yet again. #4. This is actually a very sweet hole. It just has a different concept than usual. The right side could maybe use a little clearing in the summer, but the fairway design is actually really sweet if you really think about it. It's tight. There's a tree in the middle of the fairway with some hanging branches. You have to keep it low the whole way for 320'. I couldn't reach this whole since I would try to throw a claymore or core down the fairway (both stable mids). That isn't going to work. I threw a saint and sword and instantly realized the concept of this hole. You have to get a solid amount of distance without a lot of height. It's much more possible to do so with a fairway driver than it is with a mid. The hill on the left side can be an obstacle, so throwing a slightly understable driver is ideal. As I've gotten more experience in the game, I realize now that this is actually an excellent hole. I was dead wrong about this one. It's actually the best hole here and probably better than any hole at Richmond. I really love this hole. It's an awesome hole that takes some serious strategic thinking. A true pro par three.

-#14, I've grown to like this one as well. Love the severe uphill. It does give a tweener feel sometimes, but it's not as hard as I made it seem. I've updated my review to a 3.0.

Sorely disappointed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

New baskets. A few interesting holes. Pretty park, a lot of elevation changes. Shorter holes, but many are hard due to major elevation change. Close to interstate.

Cons:

I played in a light rain, which made some of the hills impossible to walk up/down, and the teepads were all soupy because they aren't concrete. Most of the teepads were hilly, puddled, short, and one even had a massive root running the entire length of the pad sloping on both sides making the teepad completely useless. Maybe I am a snob but I can't stand a teepad that is nowhere near flat, and there were several here. The tee signs only tell you distance and par. They don't tell you where the basket is I.e. Left/right. There was no gap on hole 9. This course needs a ton of work to make it playable, and even then I am not crazy about the design of many of the holes. You are forced to throw your disc nose up(like 45 degrees nose up)a lot to get up the hills and there are a ton of sidearm shots off the pad. Probably 60% fh shots and 40% bh off the pad.

Other Thoughts:

If you are just driving through Asheville like I was, play Richmond hills, don't stop here. I was not impressed.

Wooded Shots and Elevation 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-The pin placements here are superb! The amount of work put into the hole design here is evident.
-As is typical of the area there is a lot of elevation that comes into play which makes for some tremendous shots! The elevation is also varied between uphill, downhill and dangerous pin placements.
-It probably sounds cliche, but this course does a great job at achieving balance between open and wooded shots. The wooded shots are tight, but fair and accuracy is placed at a premium.
-Brand new DISCatchers catch great and stand out.
-For a brand new course, Sandhill is well broken in and not nearly as rough as I expected. With that being said there are definitely some areas that you don't want to go. Do not go long on hole 17!
-Navigation for the most part is a breeze.
-Sandhill plays as a circle that brings you right back to the parking lot where you started from. In addition there are bathrooms, a water fountain and a playground right by the parking area.

Cons:

-One of the biggest cons with the course is that it is extremely busy. Maybe it will calm down once the newness wears off, but at the moment it is getting a lot of play which means waiting on the tee or playing through several groups during a round.
-While navigation is fairly straightforward, there are a few spots that I would recommend "Next tee" signs namely after 3, 9 and 13.
-With all of the play the tees are wearing down quickly and many of them are already a pile of dirt by the tee sign. This course is in desperate need of concrete tees.
-The sign posts and sign displays themselves are great, but maps of the holes are needed to avoid the need to walk up the fairway to search for the basket.

Other Thoughts:

I came into this course with high expectations and was not disappointed. Overall, Sandhill NTDGC is not a championship course, but is another notch is Asheville's belt. It is definitely worth a trip and pairs nicely with the nearby Richmond Hill. I will definitely be back!
