Things to consider before a throw

What's some good factors to consider before making any drive, lay-up or putt??? Trying to make a mental checklist of any factors to consider before I play in my first tournament.

Always look at all possible options. Try to find at least three possible lines from where you are throwing to your target. Pick the easiest, or the one you can make most consistently. Think about the wind. Think about the disc you're throwing, and the ground where you're aiming, so you know what type of skip you should expect, and adjust accordingly.

That's what I think of off the top of my head, but there is certainly more.

Pick the shot that is most comfortable and has the highest percentage of success. If a hyzer line is filled with trees and the anny/FH line clearer, then thats the shot to take. You may be more comfortable with the hyzer, but the fh line has the better chance of success

Its all about choosing the shot with the least margin for error. At least any error that could cause you a stroke

In tournament play, especially your first tournament, you should always think, if I make this shot will I be called a bagger?

Good luck at the Ice Bowl! Don't forget your 5 canned goods.

My what a beautiful day it is!! The birds are singing so joyfully, the trees look awesome, the flowers are blooming, and the sky is wonderful shade of blue. Such a day to be in the park!!

then throw. Save all the other thinking for practice and just execute.

Wind
Disc selection, in other words is this the same disc I always throw on this type of hole.
That's it
Over thinking leads to poor decision making.
You know how to play the game , you do it everyday.

Slow everything down in you head, picture what you want the disc to do (line, spin skip, etc). Then forget everything, think of what it would be like to throw with out the blessing of sight, fart a little for the next guy on the pad and let the disc do its job....

Here's my favorite quote from The Legend of Bagger Vance:

"Put your eyes on Bobby Jones... Look at his practice swing, almost like he's searchin for something... Then he finds it... Watch how he settle hisself right into th emiddle of it, feel that focus... He got a lot of shots he could choose from... Duffs and tops and skulls, there's only ONE shot that's in perfect harmony with the feild... One shot that's his, authentic shot, and that shot is gonna choose him... There's a perfect shot out there tryin' to find each and every one of us... All we got to do is get ourselves out of its way, to let it choose us... Can't see that flag as some dragon you got to slay... You got to look with soft eyes... See the place where the tides and the seasons and the turnin' of the Earth, all come together... where everything that is, becomes one... You got to seek that place with your soul Junuh... Seek it with your hands don't think about it... Feel it... Your hands is wiser than your head ever gonna be... Now I can't take you there Junuh... Just hopes I can help you find a way... Just you... that ball... that flag... and all you are..."

All the other stuff like your x-step, pull through, etc. will improve as a function of muscle memory you gain through practice. So long as you properly account for the three points above, the best thing you can do is empty your mind.

Depending on who you are, this could turn out to be fairly easy. :p

How far is it, do I have a disc/shot for that distance/route, is it clear to throw, and agree with the high percentage shot you are most confident with.

Make sure you can visualize the shot you're wanting to take. Visualize the disc in flight and the finish. If you can't visualize it clearly without thinking about something negative, step away and clear your head and do it again. A positive mind is a winning mind. Negatives thoughts create negative shots.

For me, I like to think of it as visualizing the "shape" of the shot---the route to the basket, the distance, the disc I'll use, the path it will fly. Less focus on the basket itself---if I've done everything else right, it will be there to meet the disc.

Many things from ball golf translate well into disc golf.

I always consider my lie.
Am I going uphill or downhill ?
Is there any slope from left to right ?
Wind speed and direction ?
Obstacles ?
And lastly, my footing.
Am I level ?
If your front foot is higher than your back foot, you will probably throw the disc up, and the reverse is true also.
Can I get a runup or step up without issues ? Like holes or slippery spots that may cause injury.

I try to account for as many variations as can possibly occur, but sometimes I rush, or just forget to check. Then I usually miss.

When I play in a group, I know people think I'm nuts , because I look up alot, and sniff the air like a dog so I can figure out where the wind is.

i always let my mind wander before the shot, i think:
1. am i having fun (most likely yes)
2. how far am i out, what distance do i need?
3. wind?
4. did i lock my front door?
5. any good shows on tonight?
then i step up to my disc and just throw what i know

See that tree? You know, that one you just know you're going to hit. Stare at it, stare it down, intimidate it. Say the mantra in your head "don't hit that tree... don't hit that tree... don't hit that tree."

Works every time.

One thing I think about is what's the worst possible thing that could happen if I miss that gap or that gap or that gap, etc. So if there are two gaps, and one of them is smaller but will leave me much closer to the basket if I hit a tree, I'll go for that one instead of falling for the larger but closer gap trick. Works every time.
