Marketplace Entry Fee

Good freaking God guys. Its FIVE dollars...a YEAR. That's a daily fee at some of our pay courses. That's less than a new base plastic disc. If you can't afford that, you can't afford the plastic that you're buying, trading or selling in the MP unless you acquired it from a pond or river.

Considering how much bandwidth the marketplace likely uses up on here, I think something like this was long overdue.

So you're saying that if I was unemployed, had no cash, and needed to sell my sweet circle stamp collection in order to feed my little children, you'd deny me a chance at a free market upon which to peddle my wares? :| :| :|

Scarpfish: <---Starves children ruthlessly. :| :|

At the very least, if this isn't simply a method of fund-raising* and is truly to make the marketplace safer, then you should consider grand-fathering in members with certain post counts or positive i-trader feedback since it is these people that are going to be considered the most trustworthy individuals on the board.

Also, I would say if this is for marketplace safety, why don't you take a more active role in weeding out people with negative feedback?

*For the record, I have absolutely NO issue whatsoever with you raising funds in whatever manner you see fit.
I don't have the time or energy to get involved on that level. Except for the forum mods that take care of squabbles and other stuff on here (which I am very thankful for), I do everything else on my own which is typically at least a couple of hours a day. That number does not include time spent developing/improving features.

I think negative feedback speaks for itself. If there's a big sign that says "DO NOT ENTER" I shouldn't have to sit in front of it and read it to you. The $5 will generate some revenue but I honestly think it will keep out some of the "riff raff" too, kind of like how the pay-to-play courses will generally be frequented by someone a little more serious about the sport (unless you live in Maine and have to pay for every course :)).

We could nominate some MP mods out of some people with high amounts of good feedback. At least 100+ with no negs imo. Maybe they should have an actual post count too? Instead of all MP/LF posts

We're just doing our part to curb overpopulation :p

For everyone complaining about the $5 you have a month so sell 1 disc for $7.50, take off $2.50 for shipping and you have the $5.

Nobody's complaining about the $5, we're discussing whether or not the added "protection" is worth the hassle of having to sign up to make a sale thread.

This just in: discgolfreview's website just became relevant again.

Honestly I can see this happening.

Like I'll probably pay the $5 here just because (in fact if I remember I'll get one of the crown level ones just cause Tim does so much with this website)

But if I was just getting into buying or selling online I wouldn't drop $5 to use the website, I'd go somewhere else. And once I was established somewhere else I doubt I'd go back.

Also, it's $5 PER YEAR, I spend way more than $5 on other random stuff every day of my life. It might not provide much of a deterrent but it is a deterrent none the less.

I would think that the $10 'membership' level would be a better starting point - the $5 'donation' level probably won't discourage many. I'd agree that on most days I spend more than $5 randomly as well.

^^Yep, you could go to a lesser site. Or pay way more to ebay your stuff.

The thing is, if a lot of people go to the lesser site, suddenly a lot of the content and such will get ramped up. Like if I go there to sell some discs I'll probably peruse the forums and such as well, and most certainly drop some willing pearls of wisdom on the way (like my Champ Ape reccomendations on every what should I buy/throw thread). That will make the site better.

I'm not releasing paypal info nor will I take any part in any disputes that take place (just like it is currently). But if someone has posted a thread, they can't claim they don't have paypal and you can insist on paying that way. Then if things go poorly you can go through paypal's process to get your money back. If it's a trade well then there isn't much recourse. I just think $5 will be somewhat of a deterrent to the less motivated rip off artists.

So pretty much this is just a fundraising effort? Sorry but that is how it is sounding. I also agree if this goes through all the marketplace at discgolfreview will become the hot place to go.

You are going half way. You say I want to deter scamers by charging them $5. But if they sneak through I will not help you even though I could.

Apparently we're reading different threads if you've come to that conclusion.

Sure. Then you run into the people who are already banned from this site, and then the other site might start charging you too. I started selling stuff on ebay when it was free, then moved to Yahoo auctions when ebay started charging fees, the went back to ebay when Yahoo started charging fees.

Why leave the best DG site on the web for a mere $5.00?

Please note I didn't say I was leaving. I stated that a new user or someone new to dealing plastic might balk at the fee and go somewhere else, as that happens it will lower the amount of people here looking to transact business which will drive traffic somewhere else.
