Hey everyone. My girlfriend and I have recently gotten into disc golf and enjoyed it a lot. I used to play occasionally at Illinois Institute of Technology when I was a student there but haven't played for a couple years. Anyway, were looking to improve our game a bit. We played the course at her school (lewis university) and both shot very well for just using a driver. Is there a suggested set of discs you guys would reccomend to us? Were open to trying anything! Thanks!

welcome!

you are going to get lots of suggestions and a bit of trolling for your 'disks' subject but i'd like to say get whats in your budget. just grab a few cheap ones. and if you're really serious about getting better check this out.

my suggestions for discs would be to pick up a 3 disc starter kit from either innova or discraft. best bang for your buck. i would pick the innova kit with the leopard if you can.

also, if you'd like to read about what people would have given themselves if they could go back in time, here is what they said.

good luck and have fun!

Starter sets are good. Try to use discs in the Speed rating of 7 or less as you begin. Take so e time and ready the Technique Sticky, Craig's pointers, and of you still can see straight after that, then I'd recommend the Discing down thread. But if you keep to reasonable speed discs you should be fine.

I agree with the starter set suggestion. However, a Latitude 64 Opto Line Diamond Light Driver would be a good beginner disc too. An Innova starter set would probably come with a Shark, but a Roc or Stingray would be good beginning mids too. As far as putters go...you really need to feel them to find out what you like.

thanks for the help so far! Now I've noticed that there are different types of material. Soft, medium, medium/firm, firm, ect. What will different types of material do for your game? Or is it more for feel?

You can read here about different types of plastics. It's a little old but still mostly applies. But you are correct in that it really comes down to feel.

ohhh man you are walking into a world that not many return from!!!

Where do you live? is there a real disc golf shop around you? Do you have other friends that play?

Id do leopard and a putter and call it done. Maybe a buzz or a roc. shoot grab a buzzz and a putter and call it done.

Soft materials are popular with putters. You do not need a Champion plastic putter until you are going to drive and approach with your putter.
There are numerous threads on types of plastics, but instead of a giving you a massive amount of links here is a quick summary

Innova R-Pro: replaces some pro plastics. Softer and less durable. Ok for putters, crappy for drivers
Innova DX: baseline plastic. Cheap with a decent grip. they beat in pretty quickly and get knicked up.
Innova Champion: Durable plastic, starts with a touch more overstability and holds stability longer. very popular for drivers, but can be slick in the rain.
Innova Star: pretty durable plastic with more grip than champion. beats in easier than champion.
Discraft Pro-D: See DX
Discraft Elite X: Almost like R-pro, but it is a unique blend of plastic that is not nearly as hated.
Discraft Elite Z: See Champion
Discraft ESP: See Star
Lat 64 Opto: most closely resembles champion
Lat 64 Gold: similar to star plastic, but it is more like Discraft's new TI plastics.

I'm out about 45 minutes south west of chicago. Usually farther south durring the weekends when I'm with my girlfriend. But I haven't looked into any shops yet. I used to have a starter set when I was in school and played once or twice a week inbetween classes. I have a feeling this is gonna end up just like baseball and golf for us. Once we start a new game, its hard to stop hah.

Now I've done a little research and if were planning on playing more often, would it be appropriate to have two drivers? A stable one and an unstable one for the varying courses? Maybe I'm putting to much thought into it but I'm thinking of my disc choice just like id think of my bat or glove choice for baseball lol

Start with just an understable one until you can get it to fly straight. You can always get an overstable one later for making sharp turns. But yes, you will soon want an overstable driver for making dog legs and fighting wind.

Go Teebird. It will start off overstable and as you get better it will fly straighter. By the time the disc is nice and beat in, you may have your form down to where if is a nice straight flyer for you.

yes you are over thinking. What is being suggested is for you to get a solid set up fro a newer player to learn the game. You dont need a pile of discs to learn this game. Grab a mid and a putter and go play for a month or so. once you feel you have good control of your mid and putter then move on to grab some drovers. This is a great way to go and will help your game down the road building a good foundation first.

and as for the glove and bat part you are spot on it is just like that, but for now you can put that off for a little while.

MrGlass I am ashamed of you...suggesting Buzzzes and Rocs

this young man needs to pick up a Westside Tournament Warship and either an EZE or Opto Pure (Latitude 64)
and an Opto Diamond and Pure for his GF

Well part of me agrees!! The warship would be a fantastic first disc, but depending on where they are may be hard to get a hold of. But i would have to say the warship may frustrate a newer player its a finesse type disc and may lead to tons of swear words. The buzzz can handle some more mustard and OAT than the warship.

but on the pures yes yes he should grab both eze and opto!!
