Why do people Jump Putt?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGXwi4CA2nY

Lots of jumpers-- mostly airballs and off the top of the basket skips. I just don't see it but you guys must be better than them.

and a punter is kicking with his legs.. LMK when you kick a disc into the basket about following through like a punter :|

And I guess the proper response to this would be to search You Tube for 20 minutes to find a video where everyone cans all of their jumpers, but I dont have time for that, and its not like its going to open your eyes to anything.

No one said anything about laying up.

Ill run putts all day long but not hoping like a toad at the basket. I can standstill and run at the basket from any angle, position and lie where jumpers are good really only on flat ground with an unobstructed stance. No ones going to jump putt into a bush or with logs etc infront of them so you are forced to stand-still. Ill take my lazer standstill all day and not have to think about what shot i need to use just run it'

But how many missed the comeback putt? The point isn't' to make 100%, it's to run at the basket while still giving yourself a comeback putt that you'll be sure to make.

the comeback putt has NOTHING to do with what we are talking about. They are pros and shouldn't miss inside 30' really ever so yeah they made the comeback putts but why not the jumpers if they are so accurate? Not a one even hit chains with a chance to go in.

Yea, you obviously havent seen a lot of people play then because I jump on uneven ground, in bushes, with logs in front of me, with a river in front of me, with an obstructed stance. Usually a stand still from deep means that I cave in to not making the putt and just laying up.

Wow, do you really expect pros to hit the basket on every shot or something. And the come back has everything to do with it. If there is no chance for a come back then most people are not going to run the jump putt they are just going to lay up.

Anyone else find it a little ironic that a dude named "Aim For The Chains" is advocating laying up instead of going for it?;)

I am not sure not jump putting is laying up. I am plenty accurate with my standstill spin putt from 50ft out. Adding a new movement to that would take a long time, lots of practice and likely little results. (How many more big putts are going to fall) Non jump putters can make a serious run at the chains as well. I think it is more of a fad. Many see pro's knocking down putts outside the circle with it and imitate it. I still see putting as an issue of practice and confidence. If you put in the time to become a good jump putter, and it works, great. I think the same time and practice will result in the same results, in a different style, though.

Jump putt is illegal. You have to have a foot on the ground when the disc is released. If you are putting then jumping you are hurting yourself and it would be called a putt jump.
I never said I hated jump putts, it looks stupid even when the pros do it.

So if you think the sport is gimmicky in itself then let's never hear again that disc golf needs to grow or be in the Olympics or on ESPN or have major sponsors. Those entities do not mess with gimmicky activities, they deal with real sports. :)

I've played quite a bit of basketball in my life, and liken the jump putt to a jump shot. I hit more 3 pointers when I shoot a jump shot then if I shoot a set shot. It increases my balance, centers my motion, and increases my range.

At the free throw line, are you permitted to land in front of the free throw line after releasing the ball? No you're not. :)
Three point line is the same, land in front of the line and it's not a 3 pointer.

Jump putts look stupid when uncoordinated people do them, when you have good form they look graceful. And who cares if you think it looks stupid. It works for most.

not to mention integrity--- it has to be the most commonly questioned issue in DG which directly impacts scoring. Hell half the youtube comments on DG videos alone seem to be pointing out stupid footfaults @xmin

802.4 Throwing From a Stance

B. When the disc is released, a player must:

1. Have at least one supporting point that is in contact with the lie; and,

2. Have no supporting point in contact with the marker disc or any object (including the playing surface) closer to the target than the rear edge of the marker disc; and,

3. Have all supporting points in-bounds.

I'm no expert, but jump putting seems to break this rule.

and to add to that you cant even cross until after it hits the rim.

Bold is 100% wrong.

Lol, you obviously do not know basketball then. On a free throw you must stay behind the line, just like when putting in the circle. Put you can still do a jump shot when shooting a free throw but you cannot go past the line.
And for a three pointer you can land as far in front of the line as you want and it is a 3 pointer. If someone could run jump and dunk from that far it would be a 3 pointer. All that matter is where you initial point of jump is, not where the landing is.

Umm you most certainly can land in front of the 3 point line and it counts as a three point shot when made. You just have to start your shot from behind it.

Free throw, no.

This is disc golf, as you can see by the replies here the rules mean nothing.
I love throwing plastic but this is another thread that shows disc golf is a joke if you want to consider it a sport, and always will be.

So I was wrong about the 3 point shot, my point is still made.

Yes it is, your comprehension of the rules of Disc Golf and Basketball are mediocre at best. Point proven.
