No live coverage at DGWT events

I think pointing to past PPV events' "failure" as reason to never try it again ignores that both technology and the sport have come quite a long way in the four-ish years since the last time it was tried. ....
Now, everything is better. Video is better, uploading (and downloading) through cell signals is better, accessing streams through a TV is better (and easier). Everything's just more accessible than it was even four years ago. Between that and a larger potential audience (more disc golfers now than then), it's entirely possible that a PPV model could be far more sustainable now than it was a few years ago.

That's not to argue that it would be an instant massive success, though. I'm only arguing that it absolutely remains a feasible option for now or the future despite past lack of success. It can't and shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

I agreed. At the least, now we can set up a gofund me (or similar page) with the goal needed to pay for the live streaming and see if the peeps will ante up.

This is always going to be the debate wether people want live or edited and are willing to "chip in" or not.

For me I'd prefer to support ccdg, tddg, jomez and those guys. The DGWT is put on by the big companies Innova and Discmania, they should be able to figure this out..

Prodigy has done it well imo too. They hired an exclusive film team and they knock out beautiful 25 minute videos same day and next day for the big tournaments.

This thread and all the others dripping with Jussi hatred are quite frankly farcically funny.

A few very very vocal and in the main downright rude and obnoxious anonymous people on the interwebz (if some of you guys think the crap you are spouting is constructive, most of it really isn't) have some opinions. For some strange reason they think their opinion is more valid than anyone else's despite not having any proof to back this up apart from their own very limited anecdotal evidence "well me and my friends love live disc golf so someone should fund it at their cost for me and I bought a Nike shoe once, and wore it whilst watching ESPN so I know all about big brands and live TV"

On the other hand you have this guy -
https://www.linkedin.com/in/jussi-meresmaa-b8646942

A former partner in a large advertising agency, with a clear knowledge of what big companies are looking for, a background education in marketing who has set up and run three now very successful and growing companies in the Disc Golf industry, has put Disc Golf on the shelves of major sporting chains and supermarkets throughout his own country. Has got a National Television broadcaster to broadcast live Disc Golf on live prime time television. Has been instrumental (alongside a lot of other incredible people) in making Disc golf a national sport in his home country and is pushing those concepts out to the rest of Europe and the US. Has run the biggest tournaments in Disc golf, has set up the Disc golf equivalent of the Ryder Cup, has has has.

Yet him and his team are wrong and you're right?

Um, ok guys.

I'd have loved to have seen live coverage, I've been staying up late with beers to watch broken streams since 2007/8, along with the 300 other people viewing at the same time...

If you have things to say about the broadcasts say them politely and constructively - there's clear evidence JT and the team listen and sometimes implement good ideas (thank god the shared MIC usage stopped!) .

Lol... Rhatton he works at disc golf.

Lets just leave it there. Ryder cup equivalent? Are you drunk already this AM?

rhatton1, this thread is reserved for vitriol, fantasy, and conspiracy.

There's no place in it for posts like yours.

I don't recall anyone voicing hatred toward Jussi. If that's how you interpret our criticism, it says more about your bias than our delivery.

I liken his product to Arena League football. It will have a following and will be considered successful by some of its supporters based on their metrix, but it will never be the NFL. Not as long as there are other products available to consumers.

Jussi has been very successful as you pointed out across his career. In-fact, I bet many of the people posting criticisms (including myself) have praised him in the past for his accomplishments. However, this doesn't mean we now need to agree with all his decisions moving forward.

Not asking for agreement, just pointing out that he might have a bit more insight and knowledge of the subject plus investment in it than those keyboard warriors shouting loudly otherwise.

There have been fair criticisms and points made, there have also been a lot of just downright weird nastiness, trying to paint him in a Machiavellian light with some strangely vindictive motive to ruin individuals pleasure in thread after thread.

Yup, kind of, guilty as charged, no affiliation whatsoever with Discmania though beyond one course installation they messed up pretty dramatically! (Whole situation was sorted professionally to a happy conclusion) but very appreciative of what they have achieved for the sport :)

I'm dreaming all right ;) one day...

Again, you seem to be misconstruing our criticisms. Nobody has claimed that he has set out to ruin our viewing pleasure. We are questioning his motives regarding scrapping live coverage for his entire tour, and any Machiavellian parallels are fair unless you have some insider information that reveals otherwise.

Business may be business, but when it comes out that some offer for live coverage (we get it, there was no *formal* proposal, for those who cling to semantics) was offered and refused for arguably the most prestigious event in disc golf, and that is followed up with a lengthy statement flatly disparaging live content outside of social media clips, sharp criticism is more than fair.

What if I told you the Arena Football League was on the verge of folding? 😳

You need to read the other thread again.

People were saying that he was doing things out of spite and/or some other ulterior motive

It was a bit of hyperbole for sure.

However... at the time it certainly felt like a spiteful move. Jussi has been more than vocal about his disdain for live coverage as-it-exists. 'ESPN level quality or don't even bother' seems to be his mantra.

So when you hear that the PDGA wanted live coverage and was willing to foot the bill and the DGWT guys STILL say no.... well that does feel a bit spiteful/vindictive on the surface.

At the end of the day its the internet. People gonna comment and speculate. Really everybody just wants to WATCH DISC GOLF in their chosen format. Nothing wrong with being passionate about that.

You're right, I haven't focused on any live coverage thread besides this one since the announcement was made on the DGWT site. I think this thread in particular has been civilized and for the most part constructive, regardless of which team you support. Sorry for the generalizations heretofore.

It's ironic threads about jussi go in this direction...

It's like having a spoon when all you need is a fork.
