Lying down 30-40ft in directly in front of the player off the tee, several photogs directly in front of players, etc, etc. Totally unacceptable, un-professional, etc, etc.

Buy a frickin 2.8f, 200m zoom lens would ya?

That's Alyssa Van Lanen. https://www.instagram.com/alyssavanlanenimages/

She's been at several events. Like Brutus said, she's done that before, and so have other photographers. To be honest, I wouldn't even be able to throw if someone was laying down in front of me off the tee like that. I don't know how the pros get used to all the cameras.

They're pros playing in a pro event. They need to expect and accept that type of coverage...

Seriously, that has to be a pain in the azz.

Pro's usually don't throw worm burners...I wouldn't be able to handle it because I'd be afraid of gripping it straight into someone. When dogs wander in front of me like that I have to get the owner to clear them, no way I want to risk it no matter how low the possibility is. But if Simon/Eagle shank it at you at 70+MPH...that's hospital at best.

If it's in their head they should 100% ask for them to move, but if they are focused on their line then I guess it doesn't matter.

I highly doubt it affects the players throw. I am not looking 40 feet in front of me when I throw, I am focused on my selected plant object to keep the head still through the hit.

The moving spectators in your peripheral vision and their phones, etc would be a much larger source of distraction.

I don't see what the problem is. This kind of sounds like a distraction of your own making. Why would you ever devote any of your attention or focus to a man sized spot ten or twenty feet off the tee on the ground?

That's the first time you have seen her? She does that at pretty much every event...

First time seeing her lying directly in front of a player at those close of a range. Just not needed at all. Spend some money to buy or rent a better (zoom) lens. Just crazy to see that in the final round of a big tournament.

Most pros love her work from what I see, and if they really wanted to they could just tell her to move if it bothered them. Kinda like the whole getting mad at someone standing still behind the basket while you're putting. If you miss and didn't ask them to move it's your fault not theirs. They're professionals, trust me if it bothered them they'd let it be known.

I like the shots I've seen, but would rather not have someone that close. As a former pitcher, it an object draws my focus it becomes a Target.

Wouldn't want that to be a person.

She might ask the players beforehand if they object to her taking those shots. And as mentioned, if they had an issue, they'd likely speak up.

FRB and Halcon make good points, and if they truly don't mind it, more power to them. Personally, I think it's in poor taste to position yourself where it's feasible you're a likely distraction to an athlete.

As to possible backlash (ala John E)...
When playing any sport at that level of exposure, saying you don't want to be photographed at all, vs. "Could you please move so you're not in my line of sight?" are two different things, IMHO.

Exactly.

I guarantee Alyssa asked those players if they were okay with her doing that before she did it. If one of them was, she wouldn't do it.

As for the suggestion of a zoom lens...no zoom is going to enable her to get the angle she was getting in that position. Or the quality/clarity. I look forward to seeing her results.

Totally acceptable AND professional. The fans who follow pros want as much coverage as they can get. If you can't handle media attention, be an anonymous amateur, you have no business playing pro.

I can comprehend some who have the skill and focus to compete at that level, who might still be distracted by someone directly in front of them at such close range. They would be completely within in their rights to ask her to move.

Yes. Being distracted by the position or movement of a photographer isn't out of the ordinary and it's beyond reasonable for any player to ask them to move to a new location in such a case.

Blending effective media coverage and top level play is a balancing act. We can't go to the extreme of not having media coverage and we can't go to the extreme of having cameras obstructing players to get "good shots". Everybody has to be a little flexible to hit the right combination where everyone benefits.
