Finally got through collating the data for the 2012 thread - 329 posts. I didn't keep data on plastic or weights and for some molds (like Roc) I didn't separate all the variants. But it still ended up with over 200 different discs. Less than 50 discs got more than 20 votes and just a little over 50 got only 1 or 2 votes.

I've got a fair bit of data sorting but I don't know how to a spreadsheet? Till I get that figured out I'll just provide the top 5 in each category and some other interesting tidbits:

Drivers (Speed 9-14)
Firebird - 106
Destroyer - 97
Valkyrie - 73
Wraith - 68
Predator - 49
Overall Innova dominated the Driver category with Discraft a distant second

Fairway (Speed 6-8)
Teebird - 142
Leopard - 94
River - 78
Eagle - 53
Banshee - 31
Again Innova dominated but Lat 64 beat out Discraft for second

Mid Range (Speed 3-4)
Buzzz - 164 (and overall #1 disc)
Roc - 105
Comet - 62
Zone - 60 (included in mids based on speed but many listed as putter)
Drone - 57
Here Discraft dominated with Wasp, Hornet, Meteor, and Buzzz SS also getting several mentions.

Putters ( Speed <3)
Wizard - 88
Aviar - 72
Ion - 62
Anode - 44
Rhyno - 42
This was close with in total Innova (149) - Gateway (125) - MVP (106) - Discraft (71)

# Molds Carried
I didn't keep track of the number of each mold carried just individual molds. I was surprised at how many different molds some folks carry. I can see carrying backups but at least 10% carried more than 13 or more molds.

Overall : Average of 9.8 molds with a max of 19 (wow!!)
Putters : Ave 1.6 w/ max of 6
Mids : Ave 2.9 w/ max of 7
Fairway : Ave 1.8 w/ max of 6
Driver : Ave 3.4 w/ max of 9

That's probably enough for now. It's getting way too late.

If you other questions of stats your interested in let me know. For example I stashed away last years numbers so maybe tomorrow I'll post a comparison. I'll also can post a manufacturer summary.

Good stuff! Thanks for taking the time to do this. I only wish the sample size was larger.

Thanks for this. The discs seems pretty similar to the recommendations that are often made in the bag suggestion forum, so I'm not surprised by what your review found. Are we a little bit of an echo chamber in that regard? Probably, but all of the discs above work well and are popular for a reason.

I'm surprised to not see the PD on that list. That is some steep company in the top 5 though.

I only carry 3 molds on the list (2 technically with the Rhyno in a tryout spot).

I think Lat64 and Westside punished Discmania this year. That's my take on it.

If sorted down to single speed groups:

14s : King 20 -- Cannon 11
13s : Boss 45 -- Number 44
12s : Destroyer 97 -- Force 21
11s : Wraith 68 -- Flow 16
10s : PD 45 -- Avenger SS 45
9s : Firebird 106 -- Valkyrie 73
8s : JLS 15 -- Vision 9
7s : Teebird 142 -- River, 78
6s : Leopard 94 -- Warship 20
5s : Buzzz 164 -- Drone 57
4s : Roc 105 -- Comet 62
3s : Ion 62 -- Anode 44
2s : Wizard 88 -- Aviar 72

Manufacturer Representation

Company : Votes -- Votes/#Molds
ABC : 12 -- 2.4
Aerobie : 1 -- 1
Ching : 3 -- 1
DGA : 34 -- 2.8
Discmania : 82 -- 9.1
Discraft : 823 -- 19.3
Discwing : 1 -- 1
Dynamic Discs : 1 -- 1
Gateway : 143 -- 9.5
Innova : 1444 -- 22.9
Lat 64 : 279 -- 14.7
Legacy : 19 -- 6.3
Lightning : 1 -- 1
Millenium : 65 -- 5.4
MVP : 177 -- 29.5
Prodiscus : 3 -- 3
Protege : 2 -- 2
Vibram : 63 -- 7
VIP : 10 -- 10
Westside : 54 -- 9

MVP is pretty highly used given they have so few molds. And didn't the Volt and Amp just come out this year?

I'm surprised Vibram didn't show better.

How do some of these (e.g. Aerobie, Ching, Discwing, Lightning, Prodiscus, Protege) even stay in business?

I carry 8 of the molds. And I think when I voted, I put up discs for certain categories that I dont even carry but recognize they may be better than what I feel comfortabl with.

^ seconded on both points.

All I can say is no real shockers there, although I would have expected a putter from Discraft to make the list (most likely either the Magnet or Challenger).

IMHardlyuniqueO: Discraft has strong line of mids, but is woefully weak on fairway drivers. Not saying all their fairways suck, but the majority of players don't seem to like their offerings as much as the competition's.

From a business perspective, you'd think they'd address that. I guess they tried (but did they really?) with the 2012 Ace Race Zombie, and while some people like it, it seems kind of nichy to me, that's not what they need - I don't see it knocking anything off that list.

The line that jumps out at me in this post. Don't think of them in the same category.

Nice thread.

Leopard - called a fairway driver with rating 2 6 5 0 1
with inbounds chart range of 321

Warship - called a mid range with rating 3 6 4 -2 1
with inbounds chart range of 315

Stats would put them in the same group!!

But that's just one example of discs being considered differently by different folks. Zone ratings put it in mid-range but it was submitted in both mid and putter category. It also was interesting some of the high speed discs put in their fairway group.

Firebird shocked me. Never seen one in a bag, and no idea what I'd do with it.

 You either rarely have to play into a 18+mph headwind, or.... you should get one and try it out.

I think a lot of people love them for overhand shots too, but I just use it for zero turn into the wind and for a strong reliable fade when the situation calls.

Thumbers, spike hyzers, forehand, anything windy, tomahawks - It's one of the most frequently recommended discs to fill the stupidly overstable fairway spot, and the usage plays out. Other popular suggestions are XXX, Predator (the only similar disc mentioned in this post), Trident (technically a fairway, IIRC), etc.

Put one in the bag, and you'll never take it out.

Final post unless someone thinks of something else.
